  • Learning Eastern Armenian

    Hello All,

I'm a 44 year old linguist, male, living in NYC. I am struggling with learning Eastern Armenian because I am having a very difficult time acquiring E.A. language tools (grammars, etc). There are many books on Western Armenian, but as I plan to visit Yerevan next year it would be nice to have a good basic grip of the dialect spoken there (E.A.) I have the Pimsleur E.A. tapes, but just can't find anything that is both recent (last 20 years) and that deals specifically with E.A. idioms and pronunciation.

I would be thrilled to hear back from anyone in the know!

Are those Pimsleaur E.A. tapes any good?

It's no Pimsleur, but there are a few basic lessons on the Birthright Armenia website.

If you do live in NYC you can visit the book store of St Vardan Cathederal and purchase Eastern Armenian language tapes. Although, I do not now how good they are. I would rather suggest you spend time in the following two websites. In my opinion, they are the finest Armenian language websites today:

Մեր ժողովուրդն արանց հայրենասիրութեան այն է, ինչ որ մի մարմին' առանց հոգու:

They're probably not bad for beginners' spoken Armenian. To get to a more intermediate or advanced level, you'll have to do more. There are a number of recent books available in Armenia now. Some are okay, others are not. It depends on what you're looking for.

If you already know quite a bit of W. A., I wouldn't worry too much about E. A. You should be able to pick it up quite quickly. As for accents, I wouldn't worry too much either. In Armenia, they understand W. A.

I have Pimsleur for French and it's pretty good for learning to speak the language, like tunot said, but if you want to learn grammar and such, fuggedaboutit.

I used the Pimsuler lessons for Eatern Armenian and it was pretty good. Unfortunately, they don't have any advanced lessons.
There is a book I picked up in Yerevan that is pretty good. It's called EAST ARMENIAN COURSE by A. V. Gevorkian. I highly suggest it.

If anyone knows of intermediate of advanced CD lessons (like Pimsluer) that are out there, please share where to find it.
