What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This reduces the chances of double-posting and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Using the search function will identify existing threads on the topic so we do not have multiple threads on the same topic.

3] Keep the focus.

This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

It started with turks bringing military hardware to the Georgian side at Batumi, and then utter silence. Now that the dust cleared they are brewing something.

Perhaps they feel threatened for their advancements in the Caucasus and feel that Georgia is a lost cause and western investors would seriously reconsider any plans they had for Georgia as an "east-west" transit route.

Perhaps they don't want to be left out of the "South Stream" project?

All speculation, but obviously something is up. If the US doesn't take any kind of hostile action against turkey (Genocide resolution) -- then we know that these "pro-Russian" statements are done with a wink and a nudge to Washington.

    We'll see.
That's what I was talking about a few posts ago, but it went right over Kanki's head...

The US will use its leverage over the Turks and a salient lever is the the threat of passing a Genocide Resolution.

I say "threat" because it will probably never come to fruition. The US will want to keep that card in their hand in order to manipulate Turkey (and Armenia to a lesser degree) for as long as possible.

Now that I spelled it out, maybe Kanki will be able to understand...probably not

He was just saying that the u.s. often will use the threat of passing a Genocide resolution in congress in order to get turkey to do its bidding. The u.s. congress recognizes the Armenian Genocide, as well as 40 out of the 50 states in the union. The aim of this resolution is to force the executive branch to use the term "genocide" rather than massacres or other synonyms.

In the end it matters if turkey recognizes the Genocide and more so what comes out of their recognition, which I don't think will happen. Occupied western Armenia will have to be returned by force one day, my estimation is before this century is over. And of course I picture any future war between Armenia and turkey to be part of a larger regional or world conflict with Armenia being on one side and turkey on the other.
For the first time in more than 600 years, Armenia is free and independent, and we are therefore obligated
to place our national interests ahead of our personal gains or aspirations.

Thanks Armanen. I don't know how much more clear I could have been. All I was trying to convey is that the US is be predictable when Turkey acts up.
Just the threat of a Genocide resolution puts Turkey back in its box.

..and North Poles, as far as your question of "why should i care"...to be honest, I would like to see the resolution passed for personal reasons, but as time goes by, I see the US/Turkish cynical political gamesmanship that is behind this resolution and it makes me care less and less about it.

            Wow... Turkey changed its mind...

And the U.S. State Department, meanwhile, said Turkey was allowing three U.S. military ships to pass through the Turkish Straits from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea to deliver humanitarian relief supplies to Georgia.

            Thu Aug 14

U.S. officials said the Turks hadn't cleared U.S. naval vessels to transit the Bosporus and the Dardanelles.

"The Turks haven't been helpful," said a State Department official. "They are being sluggish and unresponsive."

The Russian invasion of Georgia has almost certainly unnerved Turkey because it has huge energy and trade interests in adjacent Central Asia .

Turkey also may be reluctant to jeopardize the $24 billion in annual trade it does with Russia , which provides around 70 percent of its natural gas supplies. The Turkish Navy also shares the Black Sea with Russia's powerful Black Sea Fleet, which in part has prompted Ankara in recent years to restrict U.S. and NATO naval operations and exercises there.

The current situation echoes the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq , when the Bush administration tried to send thousands of U.S. troops into northern Iraq through Turkey — a Muslim nation where most people opposed the war— without first obtaining Ankara's permission.

It's not that suprising. All washington had to do was remind the turks who's hand is around their b*lls.

                ..............BREAKING NEWS....................

US Warship, USS McFaul passes through Bosphorus en route to Georgia

The US Navy AEGIS guided missile destroyer, the USS McFaul, was pictured passing through the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles Straits into the Black Sea on Friday and is nearing Gerogia.

A potential flash point is developing around the Georgian port city of Poti where Russian forces continue to occupy areas around the city, where the American vessels would most likely unload their humanitarian supplies. The US views the pull back from Poti, in conjunction with other Russian pull backs, as a key to diffusing the situation.

The ships will be the first U.S. vessels to deliver aid to Georgia since the Caucasus conflict erupted this month.

In anticipation of the Russian withdrawal that Russian President Medvedev assured the world on August 19th would take place by Friday, August 22nd, and having received permission from the Turkish government to transit the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles Straits, the United States announced that it would have three of its military vessels in the Black Sea of the coast of Georgia to perform humanitairan support for the people of Georgia in the next few days. The guided missile destroyer, USS McFaul, the Command and Control Ship, and flagship of the US 6th fleet, the USS Mount Whitney, and the US Coast Guard, high endurance cutter, USCGC Dallas, will all be in place in that time frame.

The USS McFaul is a front line, major US Navy combatant. An AEGIS Destroyer, she is very good at anti-sub work, anti-surface work, and outstanding at anti-air defense. She's been loaded with humanitarian supplies, and will be the first ship to arrive, probably Friday, th 22nd, or Saturday, the 23rd. Although she is there to help with humanitarian needs, there can be no mistake that she is also a sign of US resolve to assist Georgia.

                US move arouses Russian suspicion

                ANKARA – Turkish Daily News

The United States' move to pass a missile destroyer loaded with humanitarian supplies through the straits on its way to Georgia has drawn reaction from the Russian military, reported NTV news channel Friday.

“The United States sending a military vessel to the Black Sea is raising suspicions,” Anatoly Nogovitsyn, deputy chief of the Russian military's general staff, was quoted as saying.

The U.S. destroyer McFaul headed through the Bosporus on Friday, taking relief supplies to Georgia via the Black Sea. The ship will be followed by two other U.S. ships, said officials. A U.S. official, speaking with the Turkish Daily News, said the mission was entirely an aid operation to meet Georgia's humanitarian needs.
“The United States and other countries and international organizations have responded to the humanitarian crisis in Georgia by sending urgently needed humanitarian aid,” added the same official. “We encourage future contributions to meet Georgia's humanitarian needs.” Washington has already provided $10.7 million in humanitarian aid to Georgia.

Turkey says any military vessels in compliance with the Montreux Convention can pass through the straits. Turkish diplomatic sources told the TDN that Turkey was ready to help international efforts to get aid to Georgia and that it could not prevent humanitarian aid operations to the war-torn country unless the ships loaded with relief supplies violated the convention.

“It is not rational to expect Turkey to block the passage of military vessels carrying aid to Georgia in line with the established principles,” said a Turkish diplomat. Meanwhile, Ankara's firm stance not to penetrate the long-standing Montreux Convention was welcomed by the Russians, learned the TDN.

Turkey governs international traffic through the Bosporus and Dardanelles under the 1936 Montreux Convention, which sets weight restrictions on ships belonging to countries that do not have coastal access to the Black Sea.

Turkey, which has close ties with neighboring Georgia and is a key strategic ally of the United States, has been walking a delicate diplomatic line during the Caucasus conflict trying not to antagonize its energy partner, Russia.

Turkish citizens not happy with USA: 'Yankee Go Home!'

Although Turkey is a known ally of the USA, not all Turkish citizens are happy with US naval ships which are going through Turkey to give 'humanitarian aid' to Georgia.
There were banners with "Yankee Go Home!"

Putin Pledges 'Answer' to NATO Black Sea Deployment

                      'You'll See,' Russian Leader Warns

MOSCOW — Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said today that Russia will respond calmly to an increase in NATO ships in the Black Sea in the aftermath of the short war with Georgia, but promised that "there will be an answer."

Meanwhile, President Medvedev sternly warned the West that it would lose more than Moscow would if it tried to punish Russia with sanctions over the war with Georgia.
Russia has repeatedly complained that NATO has too many warships in the Black Sea. A Foreign Ministry spokesman, Andrei Nesterenko, said today that currently there are two American, one Polish, one Spanish, and one German ship there.
"We don't understand what American ships are doing on the Georgian shores, but this is a question of taste, it's a decision by our American colleagues," Mr. Putin reportedly said. "The second question is why the humanitarian aid is being delivered on naval vessels armed with the newest rocket systems."
Russia's reaction to NATO ships "will be calm, without any sort of hysteria. But of course, there will be an answer," Interfax quoted Mr. Putin as saying during a visit to Uzbekistan.

Asked exactly what measures Russia would take in response to NATO ships in the Black Sea, Mr. Putin was quoted as answering, "You'll see."

NATO continues to build up naval presence in Black Sea

                      03/ 09/ 2008

ANKARA/MOSCOW, September 3 (RIA Novosti) - NATO is continuing to strengthen its naval task force in the Black Sea, a Turkish military source said on Wednesday.
"A U.S. Pathfinder ship has entered the Black Sea," the source said on condition of anonymity.

USNS Pathfinder (T-AGS 60) is an oceanographic survey ship owned by Military Sealift Command and has a civilian crew and scientists on board.

However, a Russian military source told RIA Novosti that ships of the Pathfinder class could be used for reconnaissance and intelligence gathering purposes.

"We have reliable information confirming that the [Pathfinder] ship has arrived in the Black Sea primarily to conduct intelligence gathering operations in support of the NATO naval task group currently deployed in the area," the source said.
NATO sent at least five warships, including guided missile frigates, into the Black Sea after Russia completed its operation "to force Georgia to peace" on August 12.

The operation came as a response to Georgia's attack on South Ossetia on August 8.
Another U.S. warship is expected to arrive in the Black Sea in the next few days, a Russian intelligence source said on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Russia will respond calmly to the presence of NATO warships in the Black Sea.
