One folly of religion is that it has the tendency to moralize theories of natural phenomenon. Thus, all on its own, it requires of its institutions to stigmatize the progress of science in various fields when they show signs that those ancient theories have fundamental flaws (this is especially the case when a religion stresses the legitimacy of divine presence on our world by citing the conclusions of the ancient theories of natural phenomenon found in their scriptures).
If you think about it, this is not even because the moral teachings of religion are threatened! It is just because they (religion) decided to tie them with scientific theories, which by the way are inherently subject to a cycle of re-evaluation and improvement through re-established consensus, unless of course you impose man-made doctrines of hysteria designed to suppress human beings from ever doing so (re-establishing consensus)!
