  • Thoughts on Language Learning -

Having been in the process of learning Western Armenian for two years, I know a fair amount about language learning. Although I am still limited in some aspects of Armenian, I have come to a level where I can for the most part be understood and understand what is said to me (not in all cases, however).

I am wondering what are your thoughts on the process of language learning and apprehension, especially for those who are learning a language in a country where it is not widely spoken. What languages are you trying to learn/have learnt? What are/were your difficulties? Recommendations for other learners, etc.

I think most threatened are all Armenian dialects and one of the challenges that we have is to save them from being lost forever (what happened to many of the "dead languages.").

To certain extent this is also true about Western Armenian (what you might call as "19th century Constantinopolitan Armenian" since Western Armenian for most part was forged there and to certain extent by the Mekhitarist fathers (a good deal of Constantinopolitan intellectuals who shaped 19th century Western Armenian were in turn schooled by the Fathers) based on several Armenian dialects. WA is threatened since it is predominantly spoken in Armenian Diasporan communities and needs that with time lose their Armenian language.

To sum up, you are to be commended Yerazhishda for taking the time and effort to learn and improve the use and survival of our mother language.
