Consciousness is a very strange fact of the physical universe.The universe would be easier to understand and much more coherent without the development of life forms and consciousness. The universal history would follow a logical process of the effects of the electrical, gravitational, strong and weak forces. Physical and chemical reactions would shape the galaxies, stars and planets, which would form, burn and die throughout the aeons. Unfortunately, we would not be here to understand it. We know that consciousness is linked to chemical and electrical reactions within the brain but nobody understands how such reactions could give rise to the thoughts, emotions and desires of the higher mammals and the sense of identity experienced by individual human beings. It is obvious that the neuronal electrical and chemical reactions within the brain are an absolute pre-requisite for the phenomenon of consciousness.

The difficult problem of converting the physics of the brain into thought and action is still a matter of fierce debate.
