The Iranian fo minister has held talks in Damascus with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.
The meeting comes after Tehran threatened "unimaginable damage" to Israel if it attacked Syria.

Iran has denied Israeli allegations that it supplied missiles to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Syria and Iran are close allies. Both support Hezbollah, whose capture of two Israeli soldiers provoked the current crisis in the Middle East.

No word has emerged about the content of the discussions between the Syrian president and Iranian foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki.

The talks come after a fifth night of Israeli air strikes on Lebanon, in response to a Hezbollah attack in which the two soldiers were seized and eight more died.

Strong defence

Hezbollah has been firing barrages of rockets into Israel from southern Lebanon, striking towns deeper into Israel than it was previously thought capable of hitting.

The BBC's Jonathan Marcus says Hezbollah has an unknown quantity of longer-range systems in its arsenal, most of which are Iranian-made.

But Iran has denied supplying missiles or personnel to the militant group, saying it only gives it political support.

Syria and Lebanon are under pressure from the United States and Europe to use their influence to rein in Hezbollah.

But leaders in both countries have strongly defended Hezbollah's actions.

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said in a speech on Sunday that Hezbollah would not be disarmed.

He described Israel as an "evil and cancerous being".

The BBC's Heba Saleh in Damascus says Iran and Syria have a strong strategic alliance, based on what they see as their resistance to America's attempts to impose its agenda on the region.

Diplomats in Syria say the country feels strengthened by Tehran's support and knows that the US would want to prevent a wider conflict involving Iran, our correspondent says.



There are plenty of Armenians in both countries and it would be catastrofic if either or both were to involve.

Well its actually all over the place I mean when USA invaded Iraq I mean they didn’t take care of the terrorist there all they did was find Sadam. But since then things haven’t been better. American, Italian, Japanese, French, Russian, etc., diplomats are being kidnapped or taken for ransom and killed and no one can fix that. That might be lead to the same situation in Lebanon.
I feel sorry for all those innocent people that get killed because of the Israeli bombing...

The final batch of Japanese soldiers has left Iraq, ending the country's first foray into an active foreign war zone since World War II
About 220 soldiers arrived in Kuwait on military transport planes.

A total of 600 non-combat troops had been working on reconstruction projects in southern Iraq since February 2004, protected by UK and Australian forces.

The decision was unpopular with the Japanese public, many of whom said it violated Japan's pacifist constitution.

"Our ground forces have bravely completed their mission and have now safely withdrawn to Kuwait," Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi told reporters in Russia, after the G8 summit.

"We carried out our humanitarian and reconstruction tasks without firing a single shot - in fact, without pointing a gun at anyone."

The soldiers were greeted in Kuwait by Japan's defence chief Fukushiro Nukaga. They are due to return to Japan in about a week, according to the Associated Press.

Humanitarian role

The Japanese constitution, drafted by the US in 1947, bans the use of force to settle international disputes.

The troops in Iraq were therefore engaged in work such as repairing buildings and providing medical training, rather than direct combat.

The decision to withdraw was prompted by plans for the UK and Australia to hand over responsibility for security in the area around the Japanese base at Samawa to Iraqi forces.

No Japanese soldiers were killed or wounded in Iraq, but Mr Koizumi faced a political crisis in 2004 when three aid workers were taken hostage by insurgents, who demanded that Japanese troops withdraw.

The three were eventually released unharmed, but another five Japanese citizens have been killed by militants.

Japan has gradually been expanding its role on the international stage in recent years.

It deployed nearly 1,000 troops to Indonesia to help with humanitarian aid following the December 2004 tsunami.

i don't root for anyone who shoots rockets and kills people. i won't take a side, because they are both wrong (although i think israel is much more in the wrong here).

It'll be interesting to see how costly things become if they do decide to carry out a ground invasion, especially considering Lebanon has stated they will fight along side Hezbollah guerrillas if this does occur.

You forgot to mention the hight tech missle ship that was badly damaged and had to be towed back to their s-h-i-t hole.

Israel is in a lose-lose situation. An invasion of Lebanon will cost them dearly in terms of materials lost, men killed and reputation destroyed. Not invading Lebanon will shatter their military's reputaion and encourage futher attack upon it. Moreover, they have just created a vast new generation of Arab and Persian youth who would seek its destruction, they have elevated Iran to a super power status in the region, they pushed Syrian back into Lebanese politics, and the Hisbollah have become the poster boys of every self-respecting Arabs.

Nice work Israel, you have followed the script prepared by Tehran better than expected.

If I was an Arabs living in the region, I would have expect Israel to get nuked a long time ago. I suggest you go an learn about the history of the region in question. The fabrication called Israel is a criminal entity and is as vile as Turkey - they will eventually be destroyed.

You are correct. They never released photos of the ship either, these ships are the pride of their navy.
