It is in the governments own interest to persue research which will better the society it governs. Medical research will make for a healthyer more productive society and will decrease the expenes of treating preventable diseases. People would gladly invest their money if they think that it will bring them better health and longevity.FYI many of the benefits of stemcell research have already been validated.

Why would anyone in the health business want to decrease the expenses of treating preventable diseases? The whole point of business is to make more money. New treatments mean more profit for the medical industry. Passing the buck onto the tax payers for the research then turning around and charging them outrageous fees for treatment seems somewhat underhanded.
