  • First Group of Armenian Athletes Return from Beijing

YEREVAN (Armenpress)--The first group of Armenian athletes Tuesday returned from Beijing, including five athletes who won bronze medals. All were given a warm welcome at Yerevan's Zvartnots airport.

Weightlifter Gevork Davtian, who won a bronze medal in 77 kg weight division, said he tried hard to win the gold. “But I realize that an Olympic bronze medal is also a significant award,” he said.

Tigran Martirosian, another weightlifter, who won the bronze in the 69 kg weight category, said the competition was very tough in Beijing.

Wrestler Roman Amoyan, another bronze medallist, said next time he will win gold.

With five bronze medals Armenia is thus far ranked in 65th place.

the first ranking system (putting infinite prestige on a single silver medal one by a nation when compared to nations that only have won bronze like Armenia) doesn't rank based on how many medals a country wins, which imo sheds more light on the performance of a national team as a whole.

I'm more content with the ranking by total medals, in which Armenia is 26th, not bad.

I'm more content with a third kind of ranking (which is the fairest and should be applied everywhere) and that is the counting of medals per capita. Obivously, a country like Armenia cannot win as many medals as China but it can beat it based on the number of athletes it sends, the number of population it has all compared to the number of medals you win. By this ranking, Armenia is first (or 2nd .. Slovenia might've taken the lead) and USA and China are ranked in the 30s and 40s

I like your ranking too Federate haha. But at the end of the day I want to see more money spent on sports programs in Armenia. Also, I'd like to see more Diaspora athletes compete for Armenia.
For the first time in more than 600 years, Armenia is free and independent, and we are therefore obligated
to place our national interests ahead of our personal gains or aspirations.
