Armenia national recruit Ozbiliz in strong performance v. Manchester United

    by Emil Sanamyan

    Published: Thursday February 23, 2012

Washington - Aras Ozbiliz, who signed on with Armenia's football team last October, became the hero of the match as his Ajax Amsterdam beat Manchester United in its home field of Old Trafford on February 23.

Despite this valiant away effort, MU moved into the next round of the tournament on balance of winning 2:0 in the first match in the Netherlands and the 1:2 loss in the UK.

Ozbiliz strike from outside the box put the teams level on 37th minute and his free-kick on 87th minute was concluded with a header, leaving Ajax just a goal shy of advancing at the expense of one of the world's most formidable football teams.

The Europa League contest was only the second match with Ajax's main roster for the 21-year-old Ozbiliz and featured only his second goal for the team, following an almost a year-long recovery from injury.

Born in Istanbul's Bakirkoy, Ozbiliz grew up in the Netherlands. Of Armenian descent, he reportedly declined offers to play for Turkey, choosing Armenia instead.

His Armenia debut is expected during upcoming back-to-back friendly matches with Serbia and Canada on February 29. Both matches will be played in Cyprus.

Also expected to join the Armenia side in Cyprus is 20-year-old Norair Mamedov, who plays for another club FC Zwolle and is also of Armenian descent; he was called up in recent weeks.

Armenia’s national football team has new member

        February 21, 2012 | 11:37

YEREVAN. – Armenian national football team head coach Vardan Minasyan announced, on Monday, those national players who will take part in the trainings to be held in Cyprus and will prepare for the friendly matches with Serbia and Canada on February 28 and 29.

But among the 31 footballers invited to Armenia’s national squad, there is one player whose name is not so familiar for many.

Norair Mamedov was born on March 25, 1991, in Karahunj village of Armenia’s Syunik Region.

He started his professional career in the Netherlands, where he currently plays for FC Zwolle. This season Mamedov played nineteen games for the club and scored five goals. He even recorded a hat-trick in one match.

Norair’s transfer value is estimated at 200 thousand euros.

Ozbiliz shines in Old Trafford audition
Manchester United transfer news: Ajax winger Aras Ozbiliz will have impressed Sir Alex Ferguson

After impressing in last night's Europa League clash against Manchester United, Ajax winger Aras Ozbiliz must surely have caught the attention of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 21-year-old is already one of Dutch football's most exciting young prospects despite having made only 29 senior appearances for the Eredivisie giants.

Ozbiliz announced himself on the European stage with a superb display at Old Trafford on Thursday evening, as Frank De Boer's side recorded a memorable 2-1 victory over last season's Champions League finalists.

With one goal and one assist, the talented youngster's man-of-the-match performance will have got everybody's pulses racing, not least Red Devils boss Ferguson, who will have made note of the attacking midfielder's potential.

His first-team opportunities at Ajax improved dramatically following the sale of Luis Suarez to Liverpool in January 2011, and he has gone from strength to strength in a wide midfield berth.

Born in Turkey, Ozbiliz's roots lie in Armenia, despite his club boss trying to convince a player he has likened to Lionel Messi, to play for his very own native Holland.

"De Boer was convinced that within two to three years I might become a player of the Dutch national team," he explained. "Holland might be a good choice in sporting terms but my heart beats for Armenia. That's why I made this choice."

Ferguson has a reputation for signing players after impressing him in matches against Manchester United - he signed Cristiano Ronaldo back in 2003, after the Portuguese star turned in a scintillating performance for Sporting.

The future certainly looks bright for Ozbiliz - could his career path take him to Old Trafford?

We are playing with our B-team while they have their A-team. There were a few opportunities that someone like Yura Movsisyan would have easily finished. But it's surprising that the coach chose to go with the B team against Serbia, the words 25th ranked team, who are playing with their A team. The coach saved the A-team for the Canada game which doesn't make a lot of sense. It would have made more sense to do the opposite.
