    Re: Sochi

Well it appears the whole world aired the opening ceremonies live except the USA I guess they were too busy destabilizing Ukraine. Hope to catch on delay tonight.

    Lame copout.

Your choice for the thread title was "Sochi," which means that what I've posted is within the scope of the title and, I would argue, of the subforum.

I don't think a video entitled "Sochi's indigenous on the sidelines" is off-topic.

Kind of off topic there Tom. I watched the pairs figurescating event with the Canadian couple doing a great job only to be outdone by an amazing performance by the Russian pair which scored the highest for that event in history. These were two outstanding performances to behold.

Russian-Armenian political scientist (and Putinist) Andranik Migranyan denying the genocide of the Circassians on Al-Jazeera's The Stream.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

    Starts at about 6:30.

Around the 30 minute mark, he invokes the Armenian Genocide to deny the Circassian one and I had to stop watching.

Well keep in mind that unlike some other countries-Azerbaidjan and Russia are full of cash thus they can indeed afford extravagant spending to glorify themselves. Tom you should note parts of that post which show that this person is grateful to be where he is and that "nobody creates any obstacles for us." Also how many times do you see the USA mentioning the Indians whom they pretty much wiped out? Remember these Armenians came to Russia to escape the true murderer-the turk and have found not only safe refuge but also prosperity. It is easy to get lost in media hype and overlook the things that really matter.

That's exactly the kind of thing I was looking for, Haykakan! Given their size and history, it is strange how neglected the Armenian communities of Abkhazia and especially Sochi are. I guess both places are kinda seen as backwaters, though perhaps the latter less so after the Olympics? And speaking of our neighbors to the east, didn't they prevent the community from erecting a General Andranik statue in Sochi a few years ago? Of course Mr. "Rise of Russia," speaking on behalf of the Armenian community of Sochi, considers expressing disagreement or disappointment with the Russian authorities' decision to be tantamount to anti-Russia (and by extension, anti-Armenia) propaganda.

Having said all that, moving beyond politics, it would be great to see Russia win gold in Hockey. It would mean a lot to the people, it would be a symbolic nod to Russia revitalization, and if it happens, I don't think a single person inside of Russia will care how much was spent and how much wasted.
