  • AC Book Club

Okay, I've been having serious thoughts about this, and I finally got to creating a thread. I am interested in starting an AC Book Club, of course for the Intellectual forumers here, as it will be only this forum, and anyone who chooses can participate. Basically, we will choose a book from a selection of books and read it together. Each month or so ( roughly ) we will feature a different book. We will read it chapter by chapter and discuss each chapter in the designated thread regarding that particular book. Or we can read it 2 chapters at once and discuss it. For the purposes of an example I will use 1 chapter.

The "Book Club" will be abbreviated. If we pick Catch-22 as the reading material, the example as a thread title would be:

    BC: Catch-22 Ch.1, The Texan

Of course I understand the constraints of school, of work, and some of you might not have time, but if anyone is interested, it's obvious you should respond saying "Yea Mouse, I'm friggin interested!". If we get enough people into it, we will decide on a book, and will read it. Every forumer will get to have a book they want read with others and we will all eventually have a chance to read the books we want.

I know this is also gonna cost money, but I come on, who is not willing to spent roughly around 20 bucks more or less for a book? In order for this book club thing to work, we need everyone's participation. I know I myself have finals around the corner, yet I am still willing to undertake this. If you are a cheap loser, or can't read, or don't like the idea of this, please don't waste my time, I am serious about this. I did this in the historychannel.com boards a while back and it was a fabulous idea, all the old geezer history buffs liked it.

    Cheers!

Dude, I was going to suggest this about a month ago and I completely forgot. Brilliant idea, Mousy. How will we select the books?

Well, this was an awesome thing we did back in the day at the historychannel boards. We will all submit a list of books we want to read with others and we will vote on whos book we will read first. Can anyone make this thread a sticky?

Well, I guess we'll have to wait for this thread to generate more replies before we can make any suggestions. Any further ideas?

This will do for now. We'll wait to hear from others.

We need a better way for titling the threads for the book club. In my haste I wasn't able to figure out a good way to title it. Perhaps the threads can be made into stickies?

By the way folks, just so you know, whatever book we are reading for that given month or two, whatever person's choice that was, they will be the host.

They will create the thread for that specific book, and kick off the discussion witht he beginning post of sort of summarizing it and giving their opinion, and the rest of us will follow.

We can have one sticky that will initially be a poll to select the book. Once the book is selected, that thread will be closed until we have finished discussion, then reopened with a new poll. The discussion itself can take place in a separate thread. I think your idea for the title should be fine. There shouldn't be any need to make the discussion in a sticky since there aren't a lot of threads in here anyway and it isn't likely to vanish from the front page. Anybody that wants to participate should find it pretty easily.
