This probably doesn't really fit into the career forum but people talk about school in here so I thought it might be ok... The most interesting class I've taken so far has been criminal psych. It's creepy at times but it's pretty damn interesting learning about these things people do and how much the mind can just completely lose it. So who else has taken this class (and/or any other interesting classes?) and am I a weirdo for enjoying the class? (Hey it's better than statistics for psychology, which was just about the most boring class I ever set foot in).

Well, throughout my younger years, my favorite class BY FAR was Math. I still love Math and enjoy solving problems, but due to my coursework, I only had to take one Math class. So I'm not exposed to it as much anymore. :crying:

Other than that, my favorite classes in college have been Philosophy (took two courses) and this Culture and Health class, which explored the ways in which culture affected health. I most likely enjoyed this class as much as I did because of the professor, but the subject matter wasn't too bad either.

As far as you being a weirdo for enjoying Criminal Psych, yea, that's what you are.

Just kidding  . I wouldn't mind giving that class a try. I always enjoyed Psychology (but not as much as the above mentioned.)

Ha! I'm a weirdo? You just said you LIKE math. Hehe. Math is tolerable in my book... A means to an end. Culture and health sounds pretty cool. I bet it would tie in well to psychology too. Like if certain cultures or socitey's are more predisposed to having psychological ailments or something... I wish I could just do the interesting classes and skip the requirements. College would dfinitely be more interesting that way.

P.S. I am hypnotized by your kitty

Among all the math's I took in college, I'll have to say discrete math (math 61 for those going to UCLA) was the best. I loved that class. But most favorite class .. hmmm ... even though the prof sucked, I am going to say Algorithms (CS 180). After that quarter, they fired the prof and later on I found out through a friend that he was teaching in CSUN for a while

My favourite class was Applied Ethics. I also liked Human Anatomy (especially the labs, where we had to work on dead cats  ).

Me, a weirdo? NOOOO!!! *the voices told me to say that*

As far as the Culture and Health class, yes precisely. Culture makes you predisposed to having certain ailments, such as Armenians, stress, and heart attacks.

And Amen to the "all fun classes, minus the sucky classes". Perhaps THEN I would actually do my homework. Brilliant! I've found the answer to my procrastination psychosis!

P.S. My kitty has that effect. Don't stare at it too long, and if you do, don't blame me for the consequences. :p

i have a long list of favourite classes-
i loved psychology as a whole- not to mention clinical psychology and psychophysics- learning abotu the senses- eyes/ears/mouth.... and how these organs contribute and translate these motor reflexes into brain functions and into "neurotransmissions"
i also loooooved cultural anthropology and philosophy and ethics... o and neurobiology

soem of the classes im am totally interestd in now are socilogy of sexuality, criminal psych- i think im getting too much into criminology now, i might end up double majoring or taking it as a minor soon...

i do liek math, weird because when i was younger i hated it, but i now miss it somehow- ... hmm what other classes? o well russian literatuer was fun, reading tolstoy, oblomov, eugene onegin, pushkin- io learned alot about russian culture in that class- and their lack of culture- lol anywhoo- i think that calls for another thread somethimes soon...

My favorite classes were all my marketing classes.

Where I learned such valuable information.

For example: A new marketing tactic-Where Advertisers/ people who work for marketing campaigns go on forums posing as regular forumers, and begin to talk about certain products, and how great they are.

Who knew?!

Another new one is doing the same, but in weblogs!

I love math. It's the most simple form of schoolwork among others. All you do is see the problem and solve the damn thing. If you know how to solve it, then that's it... you're done with it.

My favorite class that I had throughout all my years of school was a class called Armenian Diaspora Studies. I got to learn A LOT about the evolution of the Armenian culture and how it's evolving in the Diaspora as well. I got presented with videos and pictures of many desasters and celebrations in and outside of Armenia throughout the years and how that affects us as an Armenian people. It was a great class and I reccommend it to anyone that wants to know more about our culture in Armenia and outside.

My favorite class is the one in between the math class and the history class, popularly referred to as no class.

huh? ? ?

What has confused you? There are classes other than English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and P.E. ;)

Basically this:

Theoretical matters: Experimentation, causation, and validity;
Quasi-experimental design: Regression discontinuity designs, interrupted time series designs, quasi-experimental designs that use both pretests and control groups, and other designs.
Randomized experiments: Logic and design issues, and practical problems involving ethics, recruitment, assignment, treatment implementation, and attrition.
Generalized causal inference: A grounded theory of generalized causal inference, along with methods for implementing that theory in single and multiple studies.

Thats a very interesting class Siggie.

Sounds like a hyped-up philosophy of science.

Oh, I had a Nature Writing class way the hell back in the day. We did a lot of hiking and kept journals, plus did some great reading and discussion. I loved that class.

Those are always good. I had a discussion with my Early Medieval European history class two quarters ago. I miss that. It's really one of the most fascinating eras to study, more specifically the period from the Late Roman Empire to its collapse around circa 300 - 1000 A.D.

Sounds like a hyped-up philosophy of science.

??? It's research design. How to conduct good research. Different designs, when each is appropriate, advantages and limitations of each, etc.

A big part of the class was criticizing existing research too. We had to look through published research and find ones with serious flaws. It was very interesting and I learned a great deal.

Same as it would be for hard science like Bio, Chem, Physics, and social sciences.

Why...?

By the way, I found macro much more interesting than micro.

"yeah like oh my god like you haven't heard of RESEARCH DESIGN? like you're so illiterate... you only know about math and PE... OMG OMG OMG" lol

good job you!!... you know how to copy a bunch of "scientific" words out of your "RESEARCH DESIGN" syllabus lol

Don't be so quick to jump down people's throats. Didn't you see the winkie? That usually means what was said just prior to it is a joke or not to be taken seriously. When did I say like twenty times? Read through my previous posts and show me when I've said something that sounded like a dumb valley girl.

I didn't copy it from my syllabus either. I copied it from the textbook :p

There's a lot of things I don't know, but design isn't one of them. That's a grad level class I took as a undergrad and then TAed the following two years.

Why?... My Sampling class lasts 3 hours (thanks God it's only once a week...:))...
I'm taking Macro now, and it seems to me that I'm taking Math class... I love Math class, but Macro should be also Economics, isn't it? :) Anyway, maybe it also depends who is your professor...
