I think it's safe to say most of us here are American-Armenians, although we may not all be first generation. What is everyone's opinion on the fact that America, specifcally Los Angeles county, has the largest Armenian population outside of Armenian itself? I Know this has been debated a thousand times on this website, but I can't help but think about it. On one hand I see the road to total assimilation, on the other I see the road to prosperity... and easy to swerve from one into the other.

Lately, I've been starting to feel a little better about it because I've been hanging out with more first generations rather than my old crod of Stansis and Havs, and I wasn't as dissapointed as I thought I may be. We may actually survive this country. Anyway, don't wanna blab too much myself, what's everyone elses opinion?

Do you suffer from an identity crisis? Seems like you're doing everything to try and fit in somewhere. Stansis? Havs? For a change, try acting yourself and not trying to fit in with "crowds". People will naturally accept you for who you are. Road to assimiliation, road to prosperity? Don't you have anything else to think about?

Well, I don't live in LA and I don't know how Armenians act there, but my opinion depends on how the people present themselves. If the majority of Armenians who are in America are acting American, it is bad. If they don't know or don't care about Armenian traditions/customs, history, language and etc, it is a downside to Armenians not living in Armenia. However there are Armenians in America who are Armenian, in the sense that they don't act American. This is from what I see though. Maybe I am wrong or maybe it's the majority of Armenians in LA. I don't know.
Then there's the other side where Armenians are living in US and are happier than they were in Armenia. Is that bad? In my opinion, it isn't. Not that living in Armenia is bad, but compared to U.S. (using it as an example) it is better. Maybe we have to ask ourselves what is more important. Armenian being happy = Living in U.S. (maybe forgetting the culture) or Armenians living in Armenia = Not as happy (keping culture and the nation alive). I'm just writing out ideas that come to mind right now and I don't have a Yes or No answer to this. Most of us are "Armenian - Americans"? Maybe to Americans we are, but just speaking for myself, I'm just Armenian. Surely I everyone who live in America has some American in them, but the majority should be Armenian. Basically I guess what I'm saying is that it depends on how people become when they come to the U.S., so that should also help to see which side is better.

Everyone has their own opinion. If you don't agree with it, then it doesn't necessarily mean that it's wrong of the person to think so. You guys can argue of what's Armenian and what's not Armenian all day, there will be no end :evil:

Our great great grandfathers may think our way of life is totally different to the true Armenian way, and their great grandfathers may think so of their way of life. Even though we think our way of life is so Armenian, and may not be so, who's to say? As generations are born, so change the ways of life. We can't remember and pass on everything Armenian that our forefathers past on to us.

My opinion is, if the Armenians are picking up the good parts of Western society (law, science, philosophy) then it is alright. If they are just going to go for the crap (rap, drugs, alcoholism) then that is horrible!

and the rap the drugs, the alcohol exist EVERYWHERE, especially in armenia, where what ever you want is easily available with just a call... and in russia, well where should i start... they have more of the terrible things then in the US...

at least in the US, its not as easy to obtain heavy drugs for the average person... you must be relatively well off and have a lot of hook ups... but in russia, the police sell it, along with the hookers... LOL!

As Armenianess goes, I'm definitely a "suburban" Armenian. Those are definitely the type I prefer to associate with as well. The ones that become professionals and like classical music etc. The ones that are more American. Now I noticed from one or two people here the said that kind of Armenian was bad, done in a very incoherant manner. I would much rather be an Armenian who can actually write proper English rather than being some kind of "pure" Armenian. The reason Armenians get some of their bad reputation, esp in CA, is because (NOT ALL of course) but a good deal of them are the "street" Armenians and act much more like other minorities like blacks and Hispanics. That's why they are considered minorities in California, but not out here on the East Coast where many Armenians are much more "suburban". I think some of the street Armenians need to become more suburban and integrated more into the American way of life. Now I am by no means a advocate of assimilation, I hate Armenians who don't even know where they came from or what Armenian really is. But what I think we need is more Armenians not being these ghetto-dwellers who advocate just knowing Armenian, maybe not even bothering to learn English (at least not GOOD English), and propogate the thug mentality. There are people on here who's profiles I come across singing the praises of "the Armenain mafia" in LA and crap like that. We Armenians are a small, proud people, and those factions of our society, which by no means represent the normal well-adjusted majority of Armenian-Americans, give us ALL a really bad reputation to the rest of America. I feel the best kind of Armenians are the second and third generation American ones, who have NOT forgotten their roots and are active members of the Armenian community. This is rare, I know, but certainly not impossible.

What is so awful is those Hollywood, Little Armenia, and Glendale Armenians are so populous there, so when people think of Armenians they think of there. so when people ask me about armenians, and their views as a community on an issue, my response is correct, that there are so many differences on issues between armenians that i cannot answer for all of them... not even about the genocide...

armenians dont realize that the "old" armenians werent like those in hollywood, lil armenia, and glendale... they were the ones involved in the arts, philosophy, astronomy, mathamatics, engineering, classical studies, etc... we were the most humble people... small in number, but big in what we covered as far as language, education, etc... is concerned...

i think it was on this forum that we talked about this, but werent the armenians the only people who had 75% literacy rate BEFORE the genocide... thats the most relative to anyone else...

we are not looking toward that direction anymore, less and less armenians are interested... all they want to do is put on make up or drive their dad's bmws...

I have noticed in many private Armenian schools that the kids really do talk about more...hmm..."MTV"-like things than those kids who do not. Something must be wrong, because I believe the other day a girl said that she was "friends with benifits" with a couple of guys...I asked her what it was, when she responded that it was being friends while making out with the occasional oral or anal sex, I was really shocked.

The loudest girls at school are Armenian, the boy who has gotten in the most fights (and lost most of them) is Armenian, the best cheater at school (no not me *blushes*) is an Armenian girl. All these things are widely excepted by the majority of the campus at my school (high school btw). Whenever someone needs to get answers for a test, or pass their driving exam, they simply ask, "where is the Armenian?" haha.

^^This all seems fun now when I get a lot of attention, but I have stopped. Why? It occured to me, that we kids are going to grow up and become the adults of tommorow...and do I really want all the Adults to be teachign their kids that the Armenians were the largest cheaters of their day???

Realize, first off, that the only reason I criticise is because I am affected by it. Not only am I worried for my people getting a bad image and ruining what I try to create (a good image for Armenians), BUT they also ruin my reputacion as well. No one at school who has known me for 6+ years ever thought I was an Armenian...because I never talked big, I never rode around in a fancy car, I was an average student with an interest in history and politics that made great debates during class, no one ever had a clue...until I told them. So frankly, I dont think any non-Armenian at school believes that I am Armenian, because of the reputacions the others have created (Tigranes, here is one for you, 5 White skinned, Classical nosed, BLUE EYED, brown haired Armenian girls go to my school....4 of them hang around with the mexican wannabe gangsters and ballers acting like phucking hos! if that is not embarassing, I have no idea what is!)

so hayq i agree with you and i agree with angelik too... i guess there is a time and place for everything, and it just so happened that this thread is the thread for discussing this topic, so why dont you all stop saying "live your life hayq" and understand that this is the place to talk about this topic and so thats why he is writing it here...

but anywho, i feel this way too... since you are a guy you see the girls doing these things, and since i am a girl i have always paid more attention to what the armenian guys have done... frankly i cant deal with them anymore... i just keep them as friends... i want to date one but they are such hores and b!tches that i get disguseted... any nice guy i know think he must wait until he's married to have sex.... i love being armenian, and since we are talking about that, and also talking about keeping it that way, i have to say that we ought to do it as individuals... each and every one of us, should make the best effort to do it... i dont know how old you are hayq but the older you get, the more you fall in love with armenia (read my post on Armenia my heart) and the more you want to be that way... but it DOES NOT! mean that we have to go backwards in time... or even pretend to be like sometihing we are not...

seriously look at the xxxs... i was at universal city walk on sunday because my work (nasa) was showing a documentary at the iMAX and it apperantly it was one of the days of Hanukkah and they had rented the entire place... there was loud xxxish music playing, there was a movie playing outside that was animated about the xxxs history, specifically about the persecution of the xxxs in greece, etc... and the place was filled with so many xxxs i had never seen that before... but guess what, there was no little corner of xxxish gansta boys... at first i thought man there are so many armenians here, but then i noticed the odd, humble behaviour, and the yamakas, and there you had it... they OWN the place! why dont we OWN A PLACE! because unlike xxxs we dont help each other, we put each other down...

i have done many things to place others (armenians) in better positions... one of them ended up getting fired and a police report was written on him because he had stolen $50,000 worth of electronics from the department store... WOW! would a xxx have done that? NO!
another friend i wrote an essay for her that was submitted into a contest and she WON first place, and I won second, but did she share her first place winning prize with me? because after all i wrote the essay, NO she didnt... "i help you, you help me???" where did that go???

another, i wrote her acceptance essays to get into the university, she got in, but i couldnt go and take the tests for her, so she got married... i want to help, i want to be there... but its not easy being one of the only ones who tries a ltitle harder...

then when i was choosen to give the speech at the academy graduation, my friends were jealous of me, instead of being happy for me... i am a bit confused... if i was xxxish, and my friends were xxxish they would never have done the horrible things they did to me... they would;ve helped me write my speech... but NOPE! not my good ol armenian friends... NAKHANDZ
