May or may not be Armenian words

There are two words I've always used that recently I found out may not be Armenian. Since I never got a straight answer, I'll ask you guys. Are Brosh (lips) and Bamidor (tomatoes) Armenian words? I know the other words for them are Shertoonk and Lolig, but I figured it was just a dialect thing like "hos" and "estegh." Are Brosh and Bomidor armenian words or are they from a different language? (I have a feeling Russian)

Haven't heard of brosh.

Bamidor is not Armenian. I think you're right about it being Russian, but it is also very similar to the arabic word which is something like banador (The only arabic words I know are those that the steet merchants in Haleb used to scream out :laugh: ). As for the real word, it's loleeg. ;)

Zeitoon no...tsitabdoogh is the real word. As for parsleeeeeeey...hmm, I think the real word is azadkegh.

I thought rehan was some other plant actually..hmm

Pamidor is definitely Russian. All the others, I don't know (I thought they were Armenian). :(

I'm not saying it's necessarily the most proper word, but is Zeitoun at least armenian 'slang' for olive? What I mena is, is Zeitoun an Armenian creation?

I think Raihan might be Basil... but is it Armenian?

Rehan, I am not sure. It's definitely been used by Armenians for quiiiiite some time (Sayat Nova - Fakhradn Meragh: maziiiiiiirt rehaaaaaaaaan, haytaytadz en, varti michoom eeeeeeen), and prominent novelist Krikor Zohrab has a cute short story called "Rehan".

I personally think it is, but I might be mistaken.

I say baghdanos. The Arabic word is ba'dounes. Hence, baghdanos. :)

hyejinx: I think zookaran (zoogaran) is the proper word for toilet/bathroom. And paghnik (baghnik) is the proper word for bath. (Like, "trkagan paghnik.")

Oh man, what a flashback...

I was in first grade (I think...I only finished 3 grades in Armenia, so it was 1st, 2nd, or 3rd lol), and learned how to spell that word "hampuyr"...but...the way the teacher had taught it was the wrong way. When I went home, we were trying to figure out whether it was hampuyr or hampyur...and no one knew for sure, hahaha. Because the adults at home thought it was hampuyr, but the teacher was positive that it was hampyur. Anyway, just thought I'd share. Akh memories. :(

In Soviet spelling, it's hampouyr [vo-huin-hi].
In Classical spelling, it's hampoyr [vo-hi].

Looks like the teacher may have thought it was spelled hampuir [ini-huin], whereby in Soviet spelling it would be hampyour [hi-vo-huin].

That's as good as I can do to defend that teacher's mistake.

My Armenian handwriting hasn't evolved from 3rd grade...so it looks very childish hehe, but thank you.

Here's some that are pretty easy to adapt to - we should all do this much at least. :)

television = heradesil
radio = tsaynaspuir
computer = hamagarkich
website = gaykech
parking garage = gankar
grocery store = nbaradoon
cell/mobile phone = pchchayin heratsayn (i just say tserki heratsayn)
gasoline ("benzine," "petrol") = karyuigh
any kind of "station" = gayan
automobile ("oto") = inknasharj
freeway = azadooghi (my favorite lol)

I try to use most of these in daily speech. My mom looks at me all weird. lol

First time I've heard about "radio, computer, website, gasoline an dparking garage" As for the others, I use them or I've already heard of them but don't use them (like heradesil. I know what it means but I say television)

gasoline= varelik (xaruyk has different meaning).

It means You get a hamBuyr (hame ev BUYR or booyr) on your Aytik (see, I didn't even say tooshik) :p
