View Full Version : hi all, nice boards.
Hi everyone...i'm new here as you will see, but i need a little help from you all if you do not mind.
I am so tired of looking for a one on one translation dictionary, i figured if i joined here and made some friends, we could perhaps make one ourselves.
My girlfriend speaks classic Armenian, and i want to learn it.
can you all help me out with a few phrases i might need when i come over to armenia next year...???
http://www.cilicia.com/armo5_phrases.html
that is the only site i can find... and well, its not very romantic...
help
Michael.

are you sure she speaks 'classic' armenian aka grapar? i hardly think any of us speak it here! and if anyone does i can assure you it is not taught at home; it's very old and very difficult to understand; maybe you meant that she speaks fluent armenian.
where did you get your username from anyway? i have an african (not american) female classmate with that first name! at first i thought you're a girl :p

Yea, I don't think anyone other than a handful of people are versed in classical Armenian. Most Armenians speak ashkharabar.

Ahh yes Peter Cowe, I've met him twice over here on the East Coast giving a lecture. A great "Armenian" heheh.

My friend learned krapar from him. I am so jealous of her Armenian capabilities...

Yes Hyebruin, she speaks 'grapar', but she understands street Armenian too. She is a journalist.
My name derives from an abrieviation. Organic Bio Intelligence. I use it only on a few sites. My real name, Michael, in Hebrew translation is Jesus.

wow! i am impressed! ;) encourage her to post here; so how did she learn it if you don't mind? and also does she speak eastern or western armenian? i am just curious.
that is so awesome! :)
She speaks all Armenian. Modern Armenian she refers to as 'street' Armenian. She learns very quick. She as learnt English in 2 months. Now she calls me most nights and speaks just English to me, which is good I guess because if she spoke Armenian I would not have a clue what she meant.
I will have to ask her how, or where she learnt. I am not sure if it would be part of her journalism course at university, but how she explains it she as spoke that way since she was a child. Yesterday, when first looking at the Armenian language I asked, "Do you speak Eastern or Western" she said no, she speaks 'classic'.
She would not speak here i do not think. She does not really speak on chat sites.
She likes Armenian poetry. I wanted to find a site that could translate from Armenian to english. If all else fails I shall send her some Shakespear or Byron. They were quite good >;-)
So what do you all do for work??? Do you surf at home or work???

First of all, welcome. :)
Second of all, that could be because there is both a General Talk section and a General Armenian Talk section.
Or perhaps I misunderstood what you were saying?

My real name, Michael, in Hebrew translation is Jesus.
Doesn't Jesus=Yeshua? Not Michael.
Doesn't Jesus=Yeshua? Not Michael.
in english it translates to michael. as in church song, Michael rowed the boat ashore....

Michael means Jesus? learn something new everyday...
And what exactly is classical Armenian? Is that another way of saying "Eastern?" cause the only two dialects I know of are the Eastern and Western... and that funky one they use in church...

Sounds strange indeed that she would be speaking classical Armenian as her native tongue... Classical is the Armenian Mashtots was writing in; the language of the church and old literature. It's a dead language, like Latin and Classical Greek.
Maybe she meant "standard" Armenian. I would guess she's probably from Armenia, where she learned to speak "proper" Armenian (like BBC English), as opposed to "dialectal".
Obi...tell me, are you xxxish yourself? I am very fascinated with the xxxs.
Welcome to the boards, stay here long enough and you will see what kind of loving and carring people we are. :)

Sorry, let me clear something up here. Yes, she actually meant she spoke proper Armenian (like BBC English), not Grapar. I am working on extending he vocabulary.
HayQ... No, sorry, I am English, Catholic.
I promise, we shall overcome the language thing, but it seems Armenian is now diluted into so many different translations, i find it hard to decide which to learn first.
She asks often if I learn words from American Armenian.
There is no American Armenian. It is either Western or Eastern. I suggest Eastern Armenian, because it is awesome.

Right.
I'd suggest learning whatever dialect it is she speaks.

i think people have the impression that in the US there is a different armenian language, and rightfully so, however with the new immigration from Armenia, it is becoming evenly divided in the easter vs. western...
obi in Armenia we speak Eastern because as you know the western part the turks murdered us and took our land, some of us move to armenia but most of us moved to europe or the US, and so those that moved kept the accent... those that went to Armenia spoke with the eastern accent... in Armenia thers is no acceptance of this "western" armenian... they are very strict there, and only one type of armenian is taught (eastern)
she speaks eastern and the website you refered to, has perfect translations... you will learn so much from that... I am very happy that you have taken an interest in this... good luck... :D
Thanks, but this is why i joined ArmenianClub. I cannot find any translations in english font. You know.
i wondered if anyone fancied helping me learn Eastern Armenian.

I can just imagine someone saying:
Chanachir z' imastutyun ev z'banes hancharoy( a bit shaky) instead of endunir imastutyune ev sovorir gitutyune.
