  • Good Armenian Histories...

Can anyone recommend a good general history of the Armenians in either English or Western Armenian? I'd like to find out about the origins of our people through the various dynasties through modern times. Something that is not too heavy and not too expensive?

"Patmutiun Hayotz" by Movses Khorenatsi. It's the best and the most accurate Armenian history book ever written. It's the Bible of the Armenian Nationalism. It's available in English and in both Armenians.

As for modern history: What do you mean by "modern"? For example the 600 years of Turkish tyranny over Armenia is the most unresearched and untouched eras of our history. Even our pre-Christian history was much better covered than these 600 years. That is until the Parthian spy, who later become known as Grigor Lusavoritch, ordered to destroy over 2,500 years of our history in form of millions of written scripts and artifacts, thousands of temples and even entire villages. So, nowdays you would find very little about our pre-Christian history, which was even richer than our modern history specially considering the 600 years of slavery.

On the other hand there a lot of historical books that extensively cover our history from the 16th century onwards. You'd specially enjoy reading about never conquered, never enslaved and always free and proud Artsakh.
Finding these books shouldn't be hard. Either Internet (for example http://www.narek.com/store/home.php?cat=3/) or your local Armenian Cultural Centre.

Have you read thru www.armenianhighland.com ?
For the first time in more than 600 years, Armenia is free and independent, and we are therefore obligated
to place our national interests ahead of our personal gains or aspirations.

The website is very good, but the other links (the ones beside the encyclopedia) have said "coming soon" for years now. I wish the author would enhance the website (such as intalling a dictionary, for example), as it would be a great one-stop website for all things Armenian.

Yeah, people have been waiting for years, including myself. But I know the author is pretty busy in his personal life.

Yerajishd, if you can read Armenian, "Hayots Badmoutyoun" by Hrant Pasdermadjian that was published in Beyrout, Lebanon should be good; otherwise the websites seems to be sufficient too.
