Happy birthday Hayastan. On this day (May 28) 93 years ago, we achieved what had been lost to us for 9 centuries. Though short-lived, the Democratic Republic of Armenia and the battles that led to its establishment are arguably the most important battles in Armenian history. Happy first independence day!

Armenia
Armenia became a Soviet republic in 1922. In 1991, it gained independence from the USSR and in 1995 held its first parliamentary elections.
Armenia was independent from 1920 to 1921, and the flag used today comes from this era. Its origin is in a design from the Armenian Institute in Venice of 1885, although this flag had the colors red, green, and blue. After independence from Russia in 1991, the Soviet flag was replaced with the 1920 tricolors of red, blue, and orange.
The red in the flag recalls the blood shed in the struggle for national existence; the blue represents the skies, hope, and the unchanging character of the land; while orange signifies the courage of the Armenian people.

Great politicians pursue the National interest and small politicians personal interests

The explanation above for the colours is what I have been taught too though the Constitution of Armenia puts some Christian twist to the colour red:
The Red emblematizes the Armenian Highland, the Armenian people's continued struggle for survival, maintenance of the Christian faith, Armenia's independence and freedom. The Blue emblematizes the will of the people of Armenia to live beneath peaceful skies. The Orange emblematizes the creative talent and hard-working nature of the people of Armenia. http://www.gov.am/en/official/
As for the origins of the colour, they come from the Rubenian dynasty of Cilicia (the last Armenian dynasty) which used colours red, blue and yellow (or orange). The First Republic adopted the colours though the ratio size of the flag greatly differs from the one used today.
The Venice design by Ghevont Alishan had two versions:
