  • Armenia during the Roman empire

I would like to have some info on armenia about it's military and politics during the Roman Empire in -264 BC and after. A part from the battle against the persians with Vartan, I don't really anything more about it.

Was Armenia a strongue military power? Where where it's geo-political limts? Who were theyre ennemies?

If you have any websites to recommend me I'll would be really gratefull... I can't get to find a real good one and the few I find contains really tiny bits of info..

    Thanks alot!

Bournoutian's book is as worthless as Bournoutian himself. It will do you all much better if you read the two volume book called "the Armenian People edited by Richard Hovannisian. However, if you are really interested in Armenian history the books you need to read are the ones published in Armenia.

I read one called "The Armenians". It is actually written by an American, I forgot his name, but in my oppinion he did a good job covering all the historic facts. It will teach you everything you need to know, from where Armenians orginated to present day Armenia. Its a really good book. I recommend you to buy it or if you got a large enough local library, ask for it, they should have it.

Its by John M. Douglas. I actually liked the book. I learned a lot from it.

Armenia was a major power at the time. The super powers at the time, Rome and Iran, fought each other for centuries over gaining Armenia's allience or subjugation. Moreover, they both conspired very hard for decades to subjugate the Armenian nation. At times the Armenian Kingdom sided with Romans and defeated the Persians and other times it sided with the Persians and defeated the Romans. Nevertheless, the socio-political situation got so untenable by the fifth century that the Armenian kingdom practically dismantled it-self and accepted Roman and Persian rule.

The era in question is very fascinating because it gave rise to Christianity within Armenia, broke Armenia's socio-political ties to Persia and promoted the creation of the Armenian alphabet. Richard Hovannisians book is very well written and complied and should be read. Incidentally, Greek city states did not exist at the time. The glory of the Greek city states last only for several centuries, from about eight hundred BC to about four hundred BC. Most people never realize this but Greece never had a united Greek nation/kingdom until the nineteenth century AD when the modern state of Greece was created.

Byzantium was the Eastern Roman Empire that was transplanted by Romans to Constantinople (a Roman town). After the fall of Rome (Italy), the native population of western Asia Minor, who were mostly Greeks - filled the void left by Romans. Nevertheless, Byzantium was not a "Greek state" as per say. Moreover, Armenians constituted the clear majority of Byzantium's military aristocracy and gave the Empire over two dozen of their finest Emperors.

All books in the U.S. are corrupt misconstrued by corrupt Armenians or Turkish fiction.
When the World Wide Web was born, things were quite simple. The internet supported just one device (the PC) and the browsers available were too primitive for me.

You need to read more than one book because the affinities and overall historical significance of the Armenian people are vast and more complex than you think, though they are interesting. I recommend you read that "ARmenian history" Thread from all the way at the beginning to the end.
