Here I'm going to post about great warriors who have fought and died for our beautiful country the first is Zoravar Andranik

    Zoravar Andranik (1865-1927)

The first name in the Armenian struggle for national liberation in modern times is
Andranik. "Like an eagle he soars over the mountains and ridges." Andranik Toros Ozanian was born in historic Shabin-Karahisar ("Shabin, the black fortress," 80 miles northeast of Erzurum). He was destined more, perhaps, than any of the other Armenian revolutionaries, to provide leadership, rationality, acumen, prudence, and effectiveness to Armenia's rising up against the brutal Ottoman oppression. Even during his adolescence Andranik recognized the pattern of Ottoman oppression and the sufferings of his people. So it was that at the tender age of 22, having lost his wife and two children, Andranik joined a partisan group formed in his native town. Inspired with the ideals of liberation for his people, Andranik went to Constantinople to meet those who had already been deeply involved in the liberation movement. He readily accepted tasks assigned to him.
When the leader, Serob Aghbiur, of a fighting group which Andranik had joined, was killed, Andranik was named leader. It was in 1901 when his fighting group held out in the Arakelots Vank against an overwhelmingly superior force that Andranik's name became famous for his effectiveness as a revolutionary leader. There were many more similar occurrences to come. Andranik, at first, joined the Hunchak party; it was through party organization that he could be effective in securing men and materiel with which to carry on. But disagreement with party policies led Andranik to leave the Hunchak ranks and join the Dashnak party.

There too, when that party engaged in practices judged to be wrong in principle, Andranik resigned. During the period 1907-13 Andranik committed his energies to helping the Bulgarian liberation movement. In it he created an Armenian division, which brought honor to itself by its effective participation. For his efforts Andranik was decorated and commissioned an officer. With World War I under way (1914-1918) Andranik went to the Caucasus and assisted in organizing Armenian battle units to fight the Turks alongside the Russian army units. In 1915 Andranik was named commander of all Armenian volunteer units within the Russian army.

    Gen. Andranik with his Men

The overthrow of the Tsarist regime in Russia (1917) and the consequent collapse of the Russian imperial army found Andranik on the side of the working class out of which the social revolution in Russia had arisen. Early in 1918 he began to organize a separate army to liberate western Armenia. Made a Major General, Andranik had many thousands under his command, Armenian soldiers from the old Russian army, and many thousand Armenians who had volunteered from all over the world. However, short on re-sources and back-up military fighting units, Andranik had to abandon his plan to take Erzurum. With the collapse of the Tsarist Russian government an independent Armenian Republic was set up in May 1918. Andranik was in sympathy with the social principles that came with the new Russian order and desired to maintain amicable relations with Russia. However, Armenia's ruling party, the Dashnaks, did not favor such a relationship. As a result Andranik once again had a falling out with them. The brilliant defense of Zangezur (1918-19) under Andranik's command marked the end of his military career.
Leaving Armenian lands he traveled to Europe and eventually to America (1922), finally settling in Fresno, California, with his new wife. His name and fame enabled him to be effective in fund-raising activities in America for aid to Armenian orphans. His life in Fresno, with frequent visits elsewhere in response to calls, was spent very much in the public eye. But his health was failing. While seeking to regain strength in a sanatorium in Chico, California, the death that he had eluded in his many years of fierce battle encounters, now finally caught up with him. The date was August 31, 1927. City-wide public attention was accorded him at his funeral in Fresno, where he was interred (September 7, 1927) in the Ararat Cemetery. A few months later Andranik's remains were exhumed and taken to Paris (accompanied by his widow) for a second funeral service and interment. Few heroes have been as well acclaimed during their lives as was Andranik.

    General Antranik's Remains Arrive In Armenia;
    Reburial Set for Sunday
YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)—The remains of Armenian National Hero Gen. Antranik were brought to Armenia Friday evening. Gen. Antranik remains were reposed at Paris's famed Pere La Chaise Cemetery in 1928.

The remains of the heroic general were gathered from Paris by an official delegation that was in the French capital on a special mission. The delegation was led by Interior Minister Hayk Haroutiunian and included Chairman of the "Yerkrapah" Union of Volunteers Board Major-General Manvel Grigorian, Major-General Arkady Ter-Tadevossian, as well as government and parliament representatives. The commission on the reburial of the hero's remains is led by Minister of Defense Vagharshak Haroutiunian.

At the airport the remains of Gen. Antranik were met by National Assembly Chairman Armen Khachatrian, Prime Minister Aram Sargsyan, Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanian, other members of the government, parliament deputies, senior clerics, military officials, artists and cultural workers. Among those welcoming the remains of the legendary military commander was one of Antranik's soldiers, 102-year-old Grigor Ghazarian. Prime Minister Aram Sargsyan told reporters that "the return of the Great Commander to the homeland, although sad, but still was a festive occasion."
"I believe that our people have always wanted the ashes of the Great Military Commander to be brought to his native land to be committed to the earth here," he said. The dream of Antranik and his brother Vazgen Sargsyan has come true at last, the premier added. From the airport the remains of Gen. Antranik were taken to the Sports & Concert Complex of Yerevan where the public will pay tribute and attend a special requiem service. A funeral rite service and a special requiem ceremony will be said at the Holy Etchmiadzin on Sunday, officiated by His Holiness Karekin II, the Catholicos of All Armenians. On that day, the remains of Gen. Antranik will be taken to the Yerablur national cemetery in Yerevan—the burial place of all national heroes. The remains will be buried there as the great son of the Armenian people willed himself: "When I die, let my body belong to no one but the Armenian people, my valiant warriors, Armenia," said Gen. Antranik before his death.
President Robert Kocharian met Friday with relatives of Gen. Antranik, who arrived in Armenia from France to attend his reburial ceremony.

"The transfer of Antranik's remains to Armenia is a great event," the president said, adding: "It was our duty before his cause and memory. Today we have accomplished a dream of the great commander—to rest in peace in his native land."

At the meeting president Kocharian handed Antranik's relatives, Vardan Nranian and Bernard Kilinjian, Armenian passports of special residency status.

"It is a great honor for us to receive the passport of the independent Republic of Armenia, and we are proud of that," Vardan Nranian said.

Speaking of the last years of Antranik's life abroad, he noted the importance of national unity and accord.

"The common national interest must be prevailing and should unite all of us," he stressed

    Ashot Rafaelyan
    1950-1994

He was born in Yerevan. He was a highly educated father of four.

1988 he took part in the national-liberation movements.

In 1992 with "Artsiv" (Eagle team) he took part in the liberation of Martakert, Vaghuhas, Harutagomer, and Horatagh.

In 1993 he volunteered in the National Army, in the same year he took part in the liberation of Sarsang’s.

He was lost in the battle of Sarsang.

    Arthur Gyurgyan

“Martakert’s fall shocked Arthur. After years of restless fighting the land feel in to the hands of the enemy. He hated the enemy more and continued fighting, losing control …”
words of the fighters for freedom

“Captive Martakert is waiting for us." These words had been pronounced with deep sorrow from the heart as the freedom fighters were standing and waiting for their next battle. Arthur couldn’t forgive himself and his friends, he couldn’t calm down for a long time for the fact that they had believed the authorities and went away from his place of birth.
Arthur Gyurgyan, was born on July 24, 1971, in Artsakh’s Martakert settlement (which was called a city later on), in the working family . He graduated the local school’s eighth form and Stepanakert’s industrial technical school , the machine-building department and went to work to the automobile enterprise as a locksmith . Honest Father and so honest son weren’t fated to work in peaceful conditions for a long time . Began Artsakh’s movement for liberation . The young men went out to the squares , were demanding freedom and justice . Arthur joined to the demonstrators . The leaders of the movement without thinking a lot stopped the industrial enterprises . The unemployed were waiting for the serious changes . The hypocritical authorities in place of promised reforms with the purpose of stopping Artsakh’s movement resorted to violence . The turks began the raids .
    - Arthur , - tells his Mother , - entered with his friends into the ranks of the self-defensive detachment . The turks were attacking and robbing our villages , were threatening to drive the Armenians out from their houses . The army in Artsakh was defending in outward appearance the frontiers , villages , people and were trying to reconcile two peoples . It was at the first months . Then it got a task to help the turks . It was clear after the events of Shahumyan and Hadrut . At the presence of the army’s unit the turks were robbing our property with impunity . The boys were forced to take arm and defend our people’s safety . Do you want to know all the justice ? Those days I was thinking of keeping my children off the war . They had grown up without Father . But every time when I was thinking so , an inward voice promted how would do their Father during those days which were fatal for the country . There is the only reply – he would send them to defend their native land , house and relatives .
I had known well Arthur’s Father , the sons of their large kin which had left for the front during the Great Patriotic War . Many of them didn’t return . Four sons of Gyurdzyan Movses didn’t come back . I was a schoolboy . I remember those big and slender boys . Before the beginning of the war the youth was giving a special charm to the village . The boys left for the front and the village became empty at once . Only for last two decades came in sight the brave, courageous and bold boys resembling to the boys of those times .
I write with pain . Artsakh’s war of liberation took away many of our brave young men all the more that the best ones . Took away those who liked their native very much , in whose hearts there was more kindness , who were earning bread and burning for their country’s fortune .
Most of them who had gone to the Patriotic War were volunteers . It was different the situation of those volunteers . They were going to join to the regular formation and getting the arm they were fighting against the enemy . The government had created its army and commanded it at that terrible war . Just after the violences of the turks and authorities Artsakh’s peaceful movement for liberation developed into the war . They forced us to do it . The Armenian young men entered voluntarily into the fight for freedom , found the arm and began to fight . The government was formed later and took under the protection of the voluntary and liberated army . Hence those victims which could be less .
Arthur was keeping an eye on the frontiers of Martakert at the first days of the movement for liberation . From the city’s suburbs everyone could see the turkish villages from where it was attacked , robbed the cattle and damaged people every day . Then came the difficult days . The cruel fights were deploying in the frontier villages . At the defense of Aygestan , Maragha and Karmiravan villages he took part with some detachments . Vladimir Balayan was taking them to fight and they always were coming back with victory .
    - After Maragha’s tragedy , - continues his Mother , - Arthur stopped smiling . He had seen what the turk could do . He had often repeated that it was necessary to punish the enemy so that he wouldn’t dare to enter into our land .
Vladimir Balayan was killed at the fight for Aygestan’s defense . Then the turkish scum entered into Martakert accompanied by the Russian tanks . The self-defensive detachments which had armed poorly retreated . Just after cruel fights they were luck to stop the enemy in the frontiers of Kichan and Chldran . The serious fights had been lasted for more than two months at the heights situated near Khacheni’s valley . Kichan , a small village situated on the main road leading from Martakert to Stepanakert passed from hand to hand several times . The fight of November 19 was fatal for Arthur . The brave boy fought till the last cartridge, fell the death of a hero , helped his friends to liberate the village . There were other deaths too at that fight . Arthur’s fight against the enemy was continued by his brother Misha , fighter for freedom who swore to take the enemy’s revenge for his brother , for the unprecedented sufferings inflicted to our people . His Mother had submited long ago with the fight and its cruel laws .
It was very difficult for the fighters for freedom . Every time getting their killed friend to his parents they felt guilty that hadn’t be able to defend their sons . I have heard many times from the fighters for freedom that the most difficult trial for them was meeting with the relatives of the killed fighters for freedom . The grief is for all . We have to bear it together .
When I was writing these lines Martakert , Arthur’s place of birth , had been already liberated . He dreamt of taking part at the liberation of the captive city very much but … The city was liberated by his fighting friends . We’ll hope that soon the whole Artsakh will be liberated , it will be made peace in our mountainous country . That the relatives and fighters for freedom will carry the flowers to the gravestones of Arthur and his hero friends and whisper in a law voice : “Be on the alert quietly , brave boys , Artsakh is liberated . It was liberated at the cost of Your blood . We’ll defend it for ever” .

                "GUGO" Gurgen Avanesyan

“With proud, cheerful, brave Gurgen we passed through the fires, won victories. He is a spirit of our fight for freedom, he is immortal, eternal in the hearts of people, son of Vahagn, "God of the fire," who came from the myths."

                -Vladimir Balayan

I have been thinking to write about Gurgen for a long time. I have met his parents, his fighting friends, and have collected information about the brave freedom fighter and now on my desk there are his mother, Lena’s, speech about her son. Then his sister, Zoya’s, letter edited by the newspaper "Yerkir." Adduce a passage from that letter : “The sister of the fighter for freedom killed in Artsakh is writing to you. On February 26, 1992 at the fight in Maragha my brother, Gurgen, was killed. As he was dying, he whispered his last wish : “Guys, don’t give them our land." I us the sister of Fedayi, Asking you "Don’t leave the graves of our Fedayis like Gugo captive."

Gurgen was born on April 20 , 1966 , in Artsakh’s Martakert region , in the village Nerkin Horatagh in a family descended from the noble kin. Alazan Gugo is a fruit of their freedom-loving spirit, Gurgen graduated the local Secondary school and the Yerevan college # 14 , served in the Soviet army two years. He served in Hallen-Germany, in a special unit. He fought forty eight battles. He was a master of sports. Returning home he went to work at the local fire station.

1988: After the massacre in Sumgait they were one of the first to take up arms and fight back. He helped form the detachment of self-defense to defend the motherland from violence of the authorities and azeris.

On February 28, 1988 he join the liberation movement. The young Fedayis learned that azeris wouldn’t go away from Artsakh without blood. The raids in various Armenian residential areas was proof of that. During the same time, Gurgen along with Vladimir Balayan and other fedayis formed the first detachment of self-defense consists of eleven brave members. They began to fight against the azeris who were robbing the Armenian villages and were kidnapping Armenian villagers for ransom.

1990 he took part in the liberation of Khodzalu settlement. Soon after he took part in various battles. Gurgen and his fellow fedayis hurled the azeris out of the frontier village of Dzanyatagh.

In the summer of 1991 fedayis left for Shahumyan where azeri detachments war threatening the Armenians from the villages.
                - Before leaving, Gurgen tried to calm his mother by saying that "Shahumyan is gates of Artsakh, , it is necessary to defend it well"

                Garnik Manukyan
