  • Eight killed in Armenian protests

Eight people were killed and 33 police injured in Armenia's capital during overnight protests, which ended after the government declared a state of emergency and mobilized the army.

The state of emergency, effective until March 20, followed the worst unrest in a decade, sparked by opposition protests against a February 19th presidential election they said was rigged.

Police fought pitched battles with opposition supporters who have held daily protests since Prime Minister Serzh Sarksyan was elected president.

The state of emergency bans protests and imposes censorship. Outgoing President Robert Kocharyan said he introduced the restrictions "to prevent a threat to constitutional order".

He accused demonstrators of firing weapons and grenades and planning a coup d'etat. The opposition rejected this, saying police had attacked a peaceful protest.

A police statement said the deaths were under investigation, adding: "We don't know if they were policemen or protesters."

About 2,000 protesters stayed on in a square in the centre of Yerevan armed with metal rods and Molotov xxxxtails as army trucks headed towards the capital of the former Soviet republic, lying in a Caucasus mountains region emerging as a key transit route for Caspian Sea oil and gas supplies.

But the crowd melted away after a message was read out from Levon Ter-Petrosyan, the protest leader and defeated challenger in the election, urging his supporters to go home.

He can post whatever he wants provided it's within the scope of the rules. This is legitimate news. Not everyone is going to sift through the pages of the Armenian politics section and commentary. And don't insult people for showing an interest or even an attempt at an interest in what goes on in Armenia. We're trying to encourage Armenian consciousness and awareness of what goes on there, so any Armenians noticing this is a positive thing.

They were not yet prepared for their bloody coup at the time... I felt/noticed mid last year that this election was to be different. The fact of the matter is, this coup was well planned and well concealed for a long time. Individuals were placed, or were converted, within all segments of Armenian society including the government and the military. Many anti-state English languages websites and blogs were prepared months prior to the elections. Armenian-American collage students were preparing for this. Armenian TV and radio stations in LA were preparing for this. What happened in LA was not a 'spontaneous' reaction by the masses. Whether you realize it or not, a big part of this attempted coup is being organized via southern California and has support from all segments of society there. California Armenians, in all their superficiality and low class, was the perfect fertile ground for Levon's movement.

Sorry, but I smell (the banned) MrLeftHye...check out the "taught" in his post (as opposed to "thought"). It's the same vapid guy that's going to bring the discussion on this board to romper room level.

I for one, don't want to attract these characters (Armenian or not).

                Anyway...
