Woman murdered months after husband, daughter

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- Family members gathered at the home where
38-year-old Karine Hakobyan was shot and killed Friday night.

Homicide detectives said she carpooled to work, dropped off a
co-worker and came home but never got out of her car.

Relatives and neighbors found Hakobyan's body, she had been shot in
the back in the head.

The way she was killed is similar to how her husband, 43-year-old
Khachik Safaryan and their 8-year-old daughter Lusine, were murdered
back in December of 2008. The couples teenage daughter came home from
school and found her little sister dead on the couch and their father
dead in a back room. They had also been shot in the head.

Police say Hakobyan moved out of the apartment because she didn't want
to live where the murders took place. She moved a few blocks away when
a unit became available in the building where her daughters
grandparents live.

Relatives say they don't know who is responsible for the murders and
detectives don't know if it's the work of the same person or group, or
if the killings are unrelated.

Police are lining up grief counselors to meet with the family.
Detectives say the family is devastated.

LAPD probes Little Armenia killings, looking at possible family connection

In December 2008, a 15-year-old girl arrived home from school to discover her father and 8-year-old sister fatally shot inside the family's Hollywood apartment.

Los Angeles police detectives labeled it a double homicide -- but the case remained unsolved.

Then, on Friday, a 38-year-old woman was found shot to death about two blocks from the apartment. Detectives said the woman is related to the family linked to the double homicide. They are investigating whether there is a connection.

Officers responding to a call in the 5800 block of Lexington Avenue about 8:20 p.m. Friday discovered Karine Hakobyan’s body in the driver’s seat of her Honda CR-V, Los Angeles police said.

The original double homicide shocked the neighborhood of low-rise apartment complexes in the eastern part of Hollywood, known as Little Armenia. All three shooting victims were Armenian. Khachik Safaryan, 43, and his 8-year-old daughter, Lusine, were found shot to death Dec. 11, 2008, in the 1200 block of Tamarind Avenue.

Investigators believe the father and daughter were killed between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. -- after the 15-year-old went to school.

The family vehicle was found a few blocks from the home, officials said, and there was no indication of forced entry into the car. Police said they did not know who moved the car.

LOS ANGELES — More than a year after finding her father and sister shot to death in their apartment, a 14-year-old girl discovered her mother fatally shot behind the wheel of her car in an attack that appeared to be connected to the earlier killings, police said Monday.

Karine Hakobyan, 38, a nursing assistant at Childrens Hospital, was found Friday behind the wheel of her Honda CRV with a gunshot wound to the back of her head.

Detectives investigating the killing of her husband Khachik Safaryan, 43, and their 9-year-old daughter Lucine said there appeared to be a link between the crimes.

"We're working on a theory that was developed in the previous homicides," police Detective Dan Myers said. He cautioned, however, that investigators had yet to uncover definitive evidence connecting the deaths.

He did not provide further details but said none of the victims had any criminal associations.

In both cases, the bodies were discovered by another daughter in the family, Myers said.

Detectives had been in regular contact with Hakobyan during their first investigation. Myers went to her apartment last week then got a call Friday saying she was dead.

"It's horrible," he said. "You meet a victim, you spend a lot of time together, then you get a call in the middle of the night saying she's been murdered."

Police have developed few leads in any of the shootings, despite a $75,000 reward offered for information about the killing of Safaryan and his daughter in their family home on Dec. 11, 2008.

Shortly after those killings, the mother and her surviving daughter moved to her in-laws in a nearby apartment complex.

Neighbors said they were shocked by the attack on Hakobyan in the complex they described as mostly family friendly and secure. However, on Monday the front gate was propped open, leaving a clear path to apartments.

A woman at the apartment of Hakobyan's in-laws said the couple was too upset to speak.

The woman, who declined to give her name, said Hakobyan kept her feelings to herself but struggled with the deaths of her husband and daughter and frequently visited a nearby memorial park.

Hakobyan and Safaryan married in Armenia and moved from the capital city of Yerevan to the U.S. in 2003, Myers said.

People don't just kill your entire family for no reason. These people definitely did something horrible and had payback knock back at their door. Ironically, I know somebody who lives in the same building as they did.

In the eyes of the killer, they are just getting rid of the witness. I agree with One Way... you had to have made the wrong people very angry for something like this to happen.
