Turkey's identity as a nation was based on the separation of religion and state, which was established by Ataturk. Thats why they are paranoid of anything religious, they want to make sure it does not find its way into politics. Its actually one of the few good things Turkey's government does.

Well, it does seem like most countries in the world have religion combined with state.
