They aren't. The AKM is also a main service rifle, and has advantages of its own.

YEREVAN, JULY 13, ARMENPRESS: It is already two days Azerbaijani Armed Forces are carrying out large-scale military exercises in the areas adjacent to the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh.

As Armenpress reports citing Azeri mass media, the enemy has lost a soldier during the scheduled maneuvers.

The victim was deadly wounded because of the ‘’ accidental’’ bullet fired by another serviceman. The military doctors failed to save the life of the sufferer, reportedly the soldier died.The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry confirmed that fact......

Maybe they are conducting much more realistic training like firing at targets with friendly soldiers in close proximity to the bullets flight path.

no but if you see all got ak47/akm,my friend when was in army he had ak74 as standart,but than they put him to border,and took his weapon to AKM, i think becouse larger cal. ?
