Colonel: Azerbaijan violates terms of Geneva Convention

Armenia and Azerbaijan have adopted the Geneva Convention, nevertheless, Azerbaijan violates the convention terms, Armenian Armend Forces Headquarters representative, colonel Andranik Mkrtumyan told reporters after the corpses of two Azerbaijani soldiers killed in March 3 incident in the village of Koti were handed to Azerbaijani party today.

He said, bodies of the Azerbaijani soldiers were kept in refrigerators in Armenia and were handed to the recipient in normal condition, while Azerbaijan handed the body of the Armenian soldier in 2008 after keeping it in soil for 13 days.

The colonel referred to Azerbaijan’s demands for the recent three years on the hand-over to be conducted in presence of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) representatives, though, in 2008 the Armenian party received 2 corpses and 4 captives without having ICRC members present.

Another AF representative Samvel Asatryan recalled that the Armenian party will return a captive to Azerbaijan in the upcoming days and Armenia has demanded to have ICRC present as Armenia receives the captives from Nakhijevan.

Asatryan highlighted that Armenia is committed to the international agreements and provides opportunity for captives to get/send letters or be visited by family.

According to the AF representatives, the Armenian party is conducting intensive works to get back the Armenian captives kept in Azerbaijan.

As reported, 6 Armenian soldiers and a family are being held captives in Azerbaijan. Armenia has two Azerbaijani soldiers and a civilian.

Armenia repatriated at the weekend an Azerbaijani man who was arrested after crossing into its northern Tavush region last December.

In what it called a “humanitarian initiative,” the Armenian military also handed over to the Azerbaijani side the bodies of two Azerbaijani soldiers that were reportedly shot dead in the same area last month.

According to the Defense Ministry in Yerevan, the two servicemen were members of an Azerbaijani commando squad that crossed the westernmost section of the heavily fortified border between the two states on a sabotage mission. The ministry said last month that one of them was killed on the spot while the other succumbed to injuries on his way to an Armenian hospital.

The Azerbaijani military has denied sending any sabotage units to Armenia.

The repatriated civilian, identified as Eldar Tagiyev, is reportedly a resident of an Azerbaijani border village. It is still not clear whether the 46-year-old crossed the Armenian frontier intentionally or by accident.

Tagiyev and the two dead soldiers were sent back home from a checkpoint in southern Armenia that leads to Azerbaijan’s Nakhichevan exclave. The handover was facilitated by the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The heavily militarized checkpoint located about 50 kilometers south of Yerevan was the scene of a dramatic escape to Azerbaijan in January of a 51-year-old Armenian man and his family. The man, identified by Armenian authorities as Yeghishe Gevorgian, managed to drive his wife and three small children in an old van in still unclear circumstances.

In a related development, the chief of the Nagorno-Karabakh army staff said on Sunday that the number of skirmishes along the main Armenian-Azerbaijani line of contact east of the disputed territory significantly increased in the first quarter of this year. Regnum news agency quoted General Levon Mnatsakanian as blaming the ceasefire violations on the Azerbaijani side. He specifically linked them with Azerbaijani leaders’ continuing threats to win back Karabakh and Armenian-controlled territories surrounding it by force.

Mnatsakanian spoke at a meeting of the top brass of the Karabakh Armenian army. The meeting reportedly focused on further strengthening of defense fortifications on the Armenian side of the frontline.

Bring an azeri to an Armenian hospital? wtf are Armenians thinking....? that dude crossed border to Armenia to kill people or i dunno what hes ''mission'' was, and they want to save his life... And i don't understand why they let go those captive azeris for nothing...at least trade tham with Armenian soldiers in azerbajan....

First they were POW and that is the way you treat prisoners of war. Or do you want us to sink to their level and start torturing prisoners?
And I thought we were getting something back from them or am I mistaken?

I agree, we are far more civilized and humans that any Azerbaijani, while our soldiers and civilians held captive in Azerbaijan must be tortured and their rights violated, we treat Azeries here well even though their POWs, showing not only our superiority as people but as players in the international ground. This kind of things give a good image of Armenia, can the same be said about Azerbaijan?
