Guys...did anyone else notice that the shilka had a radar upgrade?? This is good news! It's the 1st time i see a shilka in the armenian army equipped with radar...any info in that?

Shilka's have had radars since the beginning of their existence in the 60's... almost all shilkas have them.

Armenia is down to 20 attack helicopters, Azerbaijan has 51

Armenia has 23 transport-armed helicopters, Azerbaijan has 50-100

Armenia has 17 SU-25s, Azerbaijan has 18

Azerbaijan has 16 MiG-29s.

Azerbaijan and Armenia has anywhere between 316-500 tanks (T90/T80/T72B/T55)

Armenia alone has 204 IFVs, Azerbaijan has 189. Armenia with NKR have 300-400 IFVs.

Azerbaijan has 680 armored cars. (African Union MRAPs, Otokar junk)

Armenia has 71 APC/BTRs Azerbaijan has 165

What are their capabilities for shooting down such a flight and what are our defense mechanisms Eddo?

Patrolling the border with a chopper is very effective.......the wreckage is in NKR so there is no question about intentions. .
Normally you would have one or two crew flying the one aircraft (not a gun ship) at high alt (say 1 to 4 thousand ft) and not so fast.Now at 2 to 4 miles away it makes an easy target for any soldier trained with a shoulder fired missile. No chance for that Heli other than emergency landing (auto totation and landing spot). Now if the same chopper was coming at them across the border at max speed tree top level with weapons then they would not be such easy targets. The pilot is ready for anything......but in this case the pilot was not expecting to get shot at with feaking a rocket.
Defense mechanism is pilot skill, chaffs, altitude, luck.....now if you are flying a gunship then you are more protected and a bigger threat.

The airport itself is roughly 25km from the line of contact I believe. Also, what are the chances they do shoot down a civilian aircraft.

The have the capability but I think the chances are low.....then again you have a baboon finger on the trigger, they hate us beyond hate itself....however it would be a political suicide for Aliyev.
If they shoot they will claim they thought it was a military aircraft.

I'm not going to dispute on who's land the helicopter fell on, that has been acknowledged by both sides. I'm just going to quote this article..

20 METERS! Although the helicopter fell on our side it was flying either right on the front line or was on no mans land. I'm not trying to justify what the azeris did. It is a much graver provocation to shoot down a helicopter, that to fly that close to the adversary, but why would the orders have been, to send a Strategic asset of our people right onto, or past a "HOT" front line. We all saw the video and saw how close the point of missile impact was to the point of contact with earth, so my point is why were they ordered to do such a thing. In order to fly a strategic asset on a mission like this, a order has to come from VERY high up. No Armenian pilot is going on any joy ride. I'm just curious what minister or political figurehead lives in La La land, and whether they will be calling the shots during the next war. I feel it's reasonable to ask that question. All this BS about it being a training mission is irritating. There's plenty of land to conduct "training missions" elsewhere. It was meant as a sign of "strength" and "courage", but someone's miscalculations resulted in the loss of three lives and a strategic asset of ALL ARMENIANS. Screw azeris for what they did but I can't blame them either. If an Azeri heli flew that close to a section of trench I was in charge of, I would order a shoot down as well.
I just hope our leadership isn't as reckless when the time comes...
