Russia, Armenia unite air defenses, create regional system in the Caucasus

Russia and Armenia have signed a collective security deal on a united regional air defense system in the Caucasus. Moscow is currently working on a similar system with Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
The air defense agreement between Russia and Armenia has been signed by the heads of defense of the two countries, Sergey Shoigu and Seyran Ohanyan.

In 2013 Moscow signed a deal on a joint regional air defense system with Kazakhstan. Russian and Belarusian systems have already been unified.

At the same time, Russia has handed over an S-300 air defense system to Kazakhstan. According to Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, “this is a great - if not the key - contribution to the unified air defense system that has already been put in place.”

Currently Armenia hosts a Russian military base equipped with S-300 air defense complexes and MiG-29 interceptor fighter jets. Russia’s Erebuni base is part of the unified air defense system of ex-Soviet republics known as the CIS. It was formed in 1995 and is situated some 126 kilometers to the north of the Armenian capital, Yerevan. According to an intergovernmental agreement, Russian military will stay in Armenia till 2044. The number of military personnel at the Erebuni airfield and 102nd Military Base in Gyumri reportedly varies between 4,000 and 5,000.

On December 8 the Erebuni base was reinforced with six advanced Mi-24P (NATO designation – Hind) assault helicopters and an Mi-8MT transport helicopter delivered from the Russian Air Force base in the Krasnodar region.

The creation of a joint missile air defense system with Armenia enables Russia to ensure its position in the South Caucasus, America’s Stratfor geopolitical intelligence firm noted in late November, about a month ahead of the current deal.

does that mean we will see what Russia sees? or they will handpick what we can see? Would be interesting to find out what this actually means on the ground. And how does this benefit them? they already have radars that can look thousands of kilometers beyond the caucus (using armavir station).

Russian arms supplies vital for Armenia – minister

Armenia’s minister of defense highly praised the Russian government’s move to provide arms supplies to the country, considering it increasingly vital for developing capacities the sector.

Meeting Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu in Moscow, Seyran Ohanyan also expressed his content with the two countries’ cooperation in the area.

“I am very thankful to you for the great help in technical-military cooperation and the supply of military goods. They are of vital importance for us,” the news agency TASS quotes the minister as telling the Russian official.

Ohanyan said he finds meetings of the kind a good opportunity to discuss also perspectives of military and technical-military cooperation. “Thanks to your efforts, as well as the Russian servicemen – our friends – the year 2015 was unique. All the measures of military cooperation have been fulfilled,” he added.

The minister noted that the two countries had never before had such a rich agenda of bilateral partnership.

Դեկտեմբերի 21-ին Ձորամուտ-Տաշիր ավտոճանապարհի 5-րդ կիլոմետրի հատվածում ՊՆ զորամասերից մեկի պայմանագրային զինծառայող Ս.Գալստյանի վարած ավտոմեքենան Ձորամուտ-Տաշիր ավտոճանապարհի 5-րդ կիլոմետրի հատվածում դուրս է եկել ճանապարհի երթևեկելի գոտուց, բախվել ճանապարհի կողային բետոնե սալիկներին և շրջվել:

Ավտովթարի հետևանքով վարորդը և 15-ամյա ուղևորն ստացած մարմնական վնասվածքներից տեղում մահացել են: Այս մասին այսօր՝ դեկտեմբերի 23-ին, տեղեկացնում է ՀՀ քննչական կոմիտեի կայքը։

Զինվորական քննչական գլխավոր վարչության յոթերորդ կայազորային քննչական բաժնում քննություն է տարվում՝ պարզելու վթարի պատճառը, հանգամանքները։

Նախնական տվյալներով՝ վթարի ժամանակ ավտոմեքենայում, բացի նշված 2 տուժածներից, այլ անձինք չեն եղել։

We are going to have full access of Russian radars. Which means we can monitor the whole Azerbajiani air space. I have read a very good analysis about this cooperation but unfortunately i can't find it now. I will share it here later.

BTW...this is a HUGE. I think sometimes we take things really lightly. But with the current situation in Syria and the growing Russian presence in the middle east (militarily), the talk is that Russia wants to build an air defense system that covers the entire middle east and gives it operational leverage over Syria and possibly Iraq. Good for us, Armenia was chosen to be this location. The talk is not only about modernizing Armenia's air defense system. It's also about establishing radar systems, radioelectronic systems, jamming systems and anti-curise/ballistic missile capabilities that would allow Russian jets operate safely over the entire region. This is not about Armenia as much as it is about Russia creating a system that counters the American missile shield and forward presence in the middle east.

There was a really interesting report a month (or so) back. Back then they showed that Armenian radars already cover the entire airspace of azerbaijan. I remember in the report they showed Haidar Aliev airport and the planes flying over it (on the radar). The talk will now be about a wider spectrum including the entire turkish airspace, airspace of Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and caspian see all the way to Tajikistan (at least that's what they showed) and hopefully new missile systems that can cover at least part of this airspace (hopefully the S-400s).

Armenia's value for Russia will get a huge boost if this goes through as planned. Our homeland deserves it.
