Nagorno-Karabagh: Military Balance Between Armenia & Azerbaijan
Re: Nagorno-Karabagh: Military Balance Between Armenia & Azerbaijan
Armenia prepared to fight Azerbaijan over Karabakh
(AFP) – 2 hours ago
MOSCOW — Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian said on Thursday that his country was prepared to fight its ex-Soviet neighbour Azerbaijan again if necessary over the disputed region of Nagorny Karabakh.
"I have repeatedly stated that we are against a war, but that doesn't mean we are afraid to fight," Sarkisian told Russia's Moscow Echo radio station.
He said that he was ready to "defend" Karabakh, which is currently controlled by Armenian-backed separatists, because the population would be expelled if Azerbaijan managed to seize the region back.
"If by some miracle Karabakh was under Azerbaijani control even for an hour, there would be no Armenian left there," he told the station.
"We must protect our population using any means necessary," he said.
Tensions have mounted over Karabakh during the past year amid stalled peace talks, increasingly belligerent rhetoric and frequent skirmishes along the ceasefire line.
Three soldiers are already reported to have been killed during exchanges of fire since the start of 2011.
International mediators have raised concern about increasing violence over the region, where ethnic Armenian separatists backed by Yerevan seized control from Baku in a war in the early 1990s that left an estimated 30,000 dead.
Azerbaijan has repeatedly threatened to use force to win back Karabakh if peace talks do not yield satisfactory results, while Armenia has warned of large-scale retaliation if Baku launches any military action.
Why?
He did not say anything new to what he had said at the OSCE nearly 3 months ago.
Politics is not about the pursuit of morality nor what's right or wrong
Its about self interest at personal and national level often at odds with the above.
Great politicians pursue the National interest and small politicians personal interests

tensions have mounted, more such statements are being made, negotiations have stalled....I've heard that if Azeris attacked it would be a very short one, they would attack, try to take back a few villages, and with a small victory pressure us into a peace deal. Of course they would take a huge risk with this as their attack could fail terribly like the Georgian attempt in 2008. Plus the moment they attack, Karabakh will be recognised as independent by Armenia.

Surly they would not be satisfied with a few villages.
A peace deal would mean acceptance by them that the remainder of the territories are permanently lost, otherwise it will not be a peace deal.
Which means they will want to "come for more".
Our military leaders have said they have counter offensive plans in place.
Although Azerbaijan can decide when to start the hostilities they cannot decide when to put an end to the hostilities.
Outside efforts normally succeed only when both sides have a genuine wish to stop.

There will be a large loss of life, our economy will nose dive, and who knows how much destruction they do to Karabakh...it's not early 90s anymore....

And vice versa.
That is one of the reasons why they have to think really real hard before they undertake such an adventure.
They have far larger vulnerable populated areas as targets for retaliation.
It would create a massive refugee problem for them with its social consequences.
They also have other economic targets which if destroyed would cause the Azeri economy to collapse.
Then it will be a case of who can leave the country ("leaders") with how much loot.
Recent middle eastern leaders behaviour is a good example.
The recent "leaks" that they asked Iran for a corridor to attack shows how snookered they are in terms of options.
Having said all this war is not pleasant and we have to avoid it if we can.
Certainly we should not start one.
