Most of ATGM platforms are unprotected. Either open stands or on vehicles(no armor). Maybe developing tactics of tank/artillery combinations where tank attacks are preceeded with artillery combing of territory?
In Syria what strikes me is the lack of effectiveness or absence of artillery. You see tanks being hit by groups that are not really covering or being protected. Smart use of artillery can cause a great damage to enemy before tanks and infantry moves in.
No matter what, tanks are the main partners of advancing infantry. There are no new tactics or methods developed yet in aiding infantry attacks. Tanks take the main enemy counter strikes on themselfs while suppressing enemy's efforts on your infantry.
4x4s are too fast for regular infantry to follow in taking front lines. If the act slow, they themselfs can become easy targets.
Tank & infantry marriage is still in effect. You just have to develop new tactics of protecting that armored fist from new weapons.
Artillery, your own drones, air power, fast moving 4x4 ATGM group hunters, etc.

In Syria, Ukraine and Iraq we see the use of artillery pretty much with WWll methods. Stationary, blind bombardment of areas and strategic objects in time/ responce lacking, old ways.
But I have seen NATO tactics where artillery is part of fast responce, flexible and agile strike systems.
Does not matter how many muzzles you got. Your artillery's movements, accuracy and management is coordinated and managed by a state of the art system, where enemy activities are suppressed or answered in seconds in a grid of 15-20 KM deep. That is where tanks and infantry should operate.
When enemy notices being targeted by artillery, the only effective responce is to hide underground or in trenches. Does not matter if shells hit directly.
By the time artillery stops, the enemy finds your tanks and infantry on top. No time and not too many options to single out tanks while being cut down by your infantry.
The above, is a scenario when you take territory. If you are defending, your tanks and infantry should be sitting in fortifications. Those fortifications mean not only trenches and buildings but also surrounded by artillery, Air Force, anti aircraft system rings. No matter where they are, even in open terrain.
Don't leave your tanks unprotected as you would not your infantry.
Whenever this two are mismanaged the losses will be painfull.

Looking again at Syria and counting the effectiveness of Russian and Syrian Air Force, the inability of jihadists to protect themselfs despite being supplied by west, even Syrian army's inability to protect against Israeli Air Force despite being aided by Russians, makes me think that it is very dangerous to prematurely wright off air forces dangers or impacts in future Artsakh actions.
Over reliance on any counter weapon, including S300-400, Verba etc, can be disastrous. Air power needs just a small opportunity, a crack in defences to tip balance.
We have to allways remember this.

              Agree with this 100%.

                2. How drones are replacing fighter aircraft in terms of recon and Attack.
                3. The importance of investing in jammers and EW systems.
                4. The importance of Artillry! If I could replace half the tanks in Armenia with artillery I would. 80% of casualties in Donetsk were due to artillery.
                5. The importance of internal stability, aka equality and transparency at home. Nothing can cause greater harm than internal disintergration aka Syria.
Never a good idea to give up on piloted jets (Airforce).......drones cannot match a pilot in a good jet.

Plus, Armenia and Artsakh do not really have an Airforce........our choppers and SU25s are ground support dirrectly working with the ground troops.

There are pilots and then there are highly trained combat aviators.
We are not Syrians, aviation is in our blood.

When we only think defensively only then there are many things we don't need.

                  I just saw your post.

                  Well said.

Everyone knows here I support air power.......that is because I know the business and I can see how venerable Azeris are to airstrikes even in Baku.

My two favorite planes are the SU25 and the a10 at least for our equation.
IF we need any larger "support air power" we should buy all used SU25 that come for sale dirt cheap and upgrade them all to modern controls. If we have around 30 we will be set.
The SU25 is good till the UAV will fully take over in couple decades.

The fact of the matter is that drones could not fulfill the role of a close support fighters like A10 or SU25 in any foreseeable future.
For tatgeted strikes when you have air superiority or the enemy has no real air defensr system or you are stealth then drones will work but as far as interseption of enemy aircraft, air to air combat, bomber runs, airial refueling, stratigic air strikes blits, etc... and close quarter low altitude combat troop support like the SU25
you will need the human factor

Any soldier fighting out of a trench in danger of getting killed will love the pilot of ground close support blowing the enemy lines to bits.
