Commenting on both why Azeris have Su-25s in Azerbaijan and importing more expensive gas from Iran.
It is important to note how petty Russia can be, and there is really no assurance that they will help Armenia in a landwar with Azerbaijan, even if Azeris attacked Armenia proper. There is no evidence that the CSTO will come to Armenia's help with troops.
I think having the ability to important Iranian gas is a good hedge should the border with Georgia close. It is also important for Armenia to have access and the best possible relations with Iran. We shouldn't torpedo every effort to work with Iran just because Russia is paranoid.

good luck with that. our so called "politicians" are so in bed with Russia, they don't even fathom the idea of flirting with anyone else. It really is disappointing to see and one wonders what could possibly be wrong with having cordial relations with Iran and the EU and China and India. I think for all its military strength and tough talk, when it comes down to it, Russia is unbelievably insecure with its standing in the world and deeply paranoid.Originally posted by arakeretzig View Post

«Իրավունք» թերթը գրում է. ««Սոչիում կայացած ՀՀ եւ ՌԴ նախագահների հանդիպման հենց նախօրեին Բաքուն որոշեց իր ռազմաօդային ուժերի զորակազմում գտնվող Սու-25 կործանիչներն օդ բարձրացնել եւ թռիչքներ իրականացնել Նախիջեւանի ինքնավար հանրապետության երկնքում: Այս ամենը պատահականությո՞ւն էր, թե դրանից պետք է որոշակի հետեւություններ անել, «Իրավունքը» պարզեց ադրբեջանագետ Աշոտ Մովսիսյանից:

Ցանկացած տեսակի զորավարժության լուսաբանում քարոզչական նպատակ է հետապնդում, այս անգամ սա կարելի էր բնութագրել որպես ուժի ցուցադրում: Եվ իհարկե, զորավարժությունների, վարժանքների ամենակարեւոր նպատակը զորքի մարտունակության աստիճանի բարձրացումն է: Ադրբեջանը ամեն կերպ փորձելու է պարբերաբար հիշեցնել հայ հասարակությանը, որ Նախիջեւանի դիրքը թույլատրում է «ռմբակոծել ու հրետակոծել Երեւանը»: Բաքուն նման միջոցների կդիմի անգամ այն ժամանակ, երբ առաջնագծում եւ սահմանում հարաբերական հանգիստ է: Մեր կողմից որպես հետեւություն պետք է լինի հակաքայլեր ձեռնարկելը՝ թե ռազմական, թե քարոզչական տիրույթում»:

The US has started ‘its own game’ within the Minsk Group, Russian expert says.

“The US fears Russia and France could offer their own interim agreement to the parties of the Karabakh conflict,” says Stanislav Tarasov, head of the Middle East-Caucasus think-tank.
The expert says he has an impression the US has started ‘its own game’ within the Minsk Group.
The comments come in the wake of statements by interim Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group Richard Hoagland publicized the six points of settlement of the Karabakh conflict.
“They had been sticking to agreed principles until now. Because of some reasons we still don’t know about the US is changing its policy,” Tarasov said in an interview with Public Radio of Armenia.
According to him, “they probably fear that Moscow could reach agreement with Yerevan, Baku and Stepanakert and find some settlement to the Karabakh conflict.”
“There is an opinion among the analytical circles in Moscow that Nagorno Karabakh could be transferred to the CIS or EEU zone, but not as part of either Armenia or Azerbaijan. Instead a special control zone will be introduced for 50 years,” he said.
According to the expert, the scenario will help ensure that Armenia and Azerbaijan have no complexes of having lost their ground in the conflict.
“Americans fear that they can be fully ousted from the region, that’s why they’re trying to play some role through Armenia or Azerbaijan, Let’s see how events develop,” he said.
Stanislav Tarasov considers an interim settlement will not bring peace to the region.
