Re: Nagorno-Karabagh: Military Balance Between Armenia & Azerbaijan
As a general rule to the topic being discussed about Russian-Armenian friendship and talks about betrayal or whatever...In politics my dear brothers "there are no permanent enemies or friends, there are just permanent interests". So put all this "Russia is our enemy...or Russia is our friend" talk aside...Being Russia's ally in the Region and having good relationships with Iran currently serves our national interests, so that is the best option we have.
On the other hand, we should make use of our alliance with Russia to improve the standing of our Armed Forces, specially during this period, when Russia for the 1st time since the fall of the Soviet Union is in "need" of Armenia as much as Armenia is in need for Russia.
1. The Russian foothold in the Southern Caucasus has grown weak, and Armenia is Russia's last remaining ally.
2. There is the potential risk of a war against Iran, which has made Russian bases in Armenia of great significance to the Russian military strategy
3. Azerbaijan has been stupid enough to bring Israel as a potential player in the region by purchasing billions of dollars worth of weapons, something that has left both Russia and Iran not too satisfied with Azerbaijan.
These new Russian-Armenian military agreements and the repair centers that are being opened up in Armenia would probably in the coming 3-5 years turn our Army into a self sufficient fighting force, which is able to upgrade it's own Armored divisions and anti-aircraft systems, with the best Russian technology, back home. Along the way the Russian Armors will also be upgraded. Russia is getting ready for a possible war on Iran. This is why we have been witnessing all these military movements and agreements in the past. Russia is hoping to make its forces in Armenia self sufficient. We should try to make the best to get the maximum from this Russian preparation to equip our Army to ensure our independence and national security.
