About one thousand Armenian women are currently engaged in prostitution in various parts of Turkey, although many of these were forced into this when they had their passports snatched, an Armenian newspaper has reported.
It noted the difficulties many have when trying to leave Turkey because the Russian consulates, who have to look after their interests, have enough on their plates anyway. The following is the text of an article by Tatul Akopyan published by Armenian newspaper Azg on 12 September and titled "Thousands of Armenian women in Turkish captivity" and subheaded "They sell their bodies for 20 US dollars in cheap Istanbul hotels". Subheadings have been inserted editorially:
"The approximate number of Armenian women engaged in prostitution in Turkey is around one thousand," a foreign diplomat told Azg on condition of anonymity. Armenia and Turkey have no diplomatic relations. The interests of Armenians either working in Turkey or staying in that country are defended by the Russian consulate in Istanbul. Armenian-Turkish links are restricted to Yerevan-Istanbul-Yerevan flights twice a week and a Yerevan-Istanbul bus route going across neighbouring Georgia.
Going rate is 20 dollars an hour
According to the diplomat, the Turkish Mahmudoglu company that operates the Istanbul-Yerevan bus route has specialized in taking Armenian women to Turkey. Armenian women charge 20 US dollars for an hour of their services at cheap hotels in Istanbul's Bayazit district. Besides Istanbul, they also "work" in big cities in the western parts, as well as in the economically backward Kars, Igdir and Van provinces in eastern Anatolia. Armenian prostitutes are ranked alongside prostitutes from Georgia and Azerbaijan. "Armenian prostitutes frequently go out into streets, and sometimes visit the Armenian church," a Yerevan resident Gevork, who has worked in Istanbul for several years, says. "Why should we find it painful to look at Armenian women selling their services here? Istanbul is a big city and prostitutes of many nations come here," a wealthy local Armenian said.
Many forced into prostitution
Not all Armenian women come here to sell their bodies. Many of them come here to work as maids, to take care of old people and children, to work as waitresses, dancers, but many of them are forced into prostitution. As soon as they get here their passports are snatched away and they are forced into prostitution and in the course of time this becomes a habit. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), some 500-700 Armenian women are taken to Turkey and the United Arab Emirates annually. Not all of them stay in Turkey. Istanbul is considered to be the main centre for prostitutes. Some Armenians, the most beautiful and young girls, are sold on to third, mainly oil-rich countries. Some return to Armenia as soon as they lose their attractiveness and are no longer in demand.
Russian consulate has little time for stranded Armenian women
In 2003, the US State Department publicized a list of countries which do little to reduce the volume of human trafficking. "People who are engaged in trafficking in women are in close contact with the police and without their knowledge they would hardly take the risk," the diplomat said. Armenian women who have lost their passports and who want to go back to Armenia have to apply to the Russian consulate in Istanbul, which has little time as it has to solve the problems of thousands of Russian prostitutes.

I've been trying to explain that to your countryman, Mos, but apparently he seems to think that Iranians have some special disposition to crime, pedophilia and prostitution - and doesn't seem to mind laying Armenian/Iranian relations to waste through his diatribes on the subject.
