It is becoming increasingly difficult to receive any news from the Sultanate. I would look forward to monthly reports from the CBA and SOCAR. That has been put to a stop.Comment

SOFAZ sells over $540M to Azerbaijani banks since early 2017

Trend:
The State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan (SOFAZ) sold $258.4 million in February 2017 at currency auctions organized by the Central Bank, SOFAZ said March 1.
In two months of 2017, SOFAZ sold $543.4 million at currency auctions.
Azerbaijani banks bought nearly $4.92 billion from SOFAZ in 2016.
The State Oil Fund will continue selling currency through auctions in 2017.
The currency sale is carried out as part of SOFAZ’s transfers to the Azerbaijani state budget, which are envisaged in the volume of 6.1 billion manats for 2017.

"Rights Groups Condemn Jailing of Prominent Azerbaijan Blogger
Twenty four human-rights groups including Reporters Without Borders condemned “in the strongest possible terms” the jailing in Azerbaijan of pro-opposition blogger Mehman Huseynov.
Huseynov’s jailing is “another example of Azerbaijan’s best and brightest being targeted for expressing opinions critical of the ruling Aliyev regime,” Rebecca Vincent, U.K. bureau director for Reporters Without Borders, said in an emailed statement that was signed by other advocacy groups including the Committee to Protect Journalists.
Aliyev has ruled the former Soviet Union’s third-largest oil exporter since 2003, when he was appointed by his father, Heydar Aliyev. The 55-year-old leader has faced criticism from rights groups for extending the presidential term to seven years from five in a referendum in September. Opposition critics have also alleged Aliyev is preparing to pass power eventually to his son, after the age limit for presidential candidates was lowered to 35 years in the plebiscite.
Huseynov is one of at least 13 journalists, bloggers and media workers jailed in Azerbaijan, the rights groups said Friday, calling for their immediate release."

Oil prices dive 5 percent as U.S. crude inventories balloon
Oil prices plunged 5 percent to their lowest levels this year on Wednesday as U.S. crude inventories surged much more than expected to a record high, stoking concerns a global glut could persist even as OPEC tries to prop up prices with output curbs.
Crude stockpiles in the world's top energy consumer have been rising all year, and soared last week by 8.2 million barrels, more than quadruple the forecasts, data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration showed. [EIA/S]
The big daily price slide could signal a steep downward move if speculators are beginning to unwind long positions in crude oil, which were close to a record, traders and analysts said. [CFTC/]
Technical analysts said more selling could be triggered if prices break below support levels after being in a tight trading range this year.......
