Peacekeepers in Abkhazia set up additional posts

Collective peacekeeping forces in the zone of the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict have set up additional observation posts, an aide to the peacekeeping force commander said on Saturday. "That was done to defuse tension that developed following an incident the day before, when three Abkhaz police were injured in a roadside bomb attack," Alexander Diordiyev said. Some media reports said Georgian commandos were responsible for the attack. But Georgia denied any involvement. Georgia's Rustavi-2 TV reported that Georgian soldiers were involved in the attack and that Georgian Interior Ministry special troops were concentrating near the administrative border separating Abkhazia from the rest of Georgia.

Abkhazian President Sergei Bagapsh announced on Friday the partial mobilization of the de facto independent republic's military, citing fears that Georgian troops could cross over into the breakaway region. The Abkhazian leader said the situation had escalated following statements by Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, who promised to use force to liberate a Georgian journalist detained by Abkhaz police. Tensions have also been raised following a recent incident in the Gali district during which an Abkhazian police car was blown up. Abkhazian presidential spokesman Kristian Bzhaniya said partial mobilization would take place parallel to a large-scale routine military exercise on February 29 - March 4. Anatoly Zaitsev, the chief of the General Staff, said up to 2,500 soldiers would be involved in the exercise.

Georgian journalist Malkhaz Basilai was arrested in Abkhazia on Tuesday while reporting on voting planned for the Russian presidential elections in the breakaway republic. Abkhazian authorities accused him of having illegally crossed into the Abkhazia. Saakashvili subsequently threatened the use of force to liberate Basilai. Abkhazia then warned Tbilisi against issuing ultimatums. Last week leaders of both Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which saw bloody conflicts after they declared independence from Georgia in 1991, said that Kosovo's independence should be taken into account as far as their sovereignty was concerned. Abkhazia said on Thursday it would seek recognition from Russia and the European Union. Russia has repeatedly said the recognition of the Balkan region's independence would set a precedent for other breakaway regions, including in the former Soviet Union. Political analysts fear that the declaration of independence by Kosovo, and its subsequent recognition by Western powers, will open up a Pandora's Box of separatist issues in Europe and beyond.

Russian peacekeepers on alert as Georgia-Abkhazia tension rises

Russia is building up its peacekeeping forces on the de facto border between Georgia and its breakaway republic of Abkhazia. It comes as Abkhazia’s president ordered the partial mobilisation of the army, in response to Georgian intentions to forcibly free a detained reporter, and a car explosion near the border. Three policemen were injured in the blast on Friday, but it's thought the attackers fled over the border into Georgia. Abkhazian authorities say up to 1,000 Georgian troops have been redeployed to the border, although none have crossed into the zone monitored by Russian peace-keepers. Tension increased between Georgia and Abkhazia following Kosovo’s declaration of independence. On Thursday, Abkhazia announced it would seek recognition from Russia and the EU.

Georgia’s breakaway republic announces partial mobilisation

The president of Georgia's breakaway republic of Abkhazia, Sergey Bagapsh, has ordered a partial mobilisation of troops to the frontier following a bombing in the region. Abkhazian authorities say three policemen were injured when a bomb hit their car and they were raked with automatic gunfire. The attackers reportedly fled across the border into Georgia. According to Abkhazian sources, Georgia is also moving more troops to the border. On Thursday, another blast killed two policemen and left 17 others injured in Georgia’s other breakaway region of South Ossetia. The explosives were reportedly hidden in a television set left at a police post.

      It all makes sense...

      *********************************

What’s behind NATO intervention in Kosovo?

Nine years after the end of NATO's bombardment of Serbia, there are questions being asked about the real motives for the deployment of the alliance’s troops in Kosovo. There are those who believe the reasons were anything but humanitarian. NATO did everything it could to convince the world that it went to war against the former Yugoslavia to protect Kosovar Albanians from extermination. But nine years later and the numbers of bodies found still don't correlate with the claims.

But maybe to find the answer to the question why NATO came to Kosovo you still have to dig deep underground? “Kosovo possesses huge reserves of coal 15 billion tonnes. We also have oil and fuel and mines with lead and gold. We are one of the richest parts of south-east Europe. But NATO didn't come here for this. They came only to save us from the Serbs. Today we are going to exploit our natural resources and not allow the Serbs to continue doing it," Professor Rifat Blaku, Deputy Minister of Public Services says.

However, the leader of the Serbs in Kosovo sees it differently. “The first reason why NATO came to Kosovo is because we are wealthy with lead and zinc. The second reason, which is also very important, is because Serbia has always been a potential ally with Russia and NATO wants Serbia to be a small country. This is why they are taking fifteen percent of the Serbian territory by taking Kosovo,” Dr Marko Jaksic, President of the Serbian Municipalities of Kosovo believes. In the nine years since NATO took over the region from Serbia they've deployed soldiers here from more than 25 countries, United Nations police, EU officials, clerks. But the one thing they didn't bring is helping people put bread on the table.

Medvedev presidency to be 'direct continuation' of Putin era

As he cruised to victory in Russia's presidential polls, Dmitry Medvedev said his presidency would be a "direct continuation" of the policies of the man who backed him to lead the largest country on Earth. Medvedev has so far received 69.22% of the vote with 70% of the ballots counted in Russia's presidential polls, according to Central Election Commission data. His nearest rival, Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov, is on 18.26%. Speaking to journalists at a news conference, Medvedev said that his presidential program would be "the path chosen by our country eight years ago." This path was, he clarified, the one "being followed by President Putin."

Russian First Deputy Premier Medvedev was publicly backed by Russian President Vladimir Putin as his successor in mid-December, and was later nominated by the ruling United Russia party as a presidential candidate. Putin later announced that he would take up an offer by Medvedev to become prime minister if his 'heir' were to win the presidency. Many political analysts suggested that Medvedev would struggle to make an impact as president with Putin as premier, and there were also suggestions that a change in the Constitution may give Putin more power. However, Medvedev seemed to rule this out on Monday, saying that, "According to the structure of authority, the president has his own powers and the head of government his own. This is derived from the Constitution and the law. No one is proposing to change this."

The inauguration of Russia's new president is set for May 7. Many Western observers, including the OSCE's main election arm, chose to boycott the election over restrictions imposed by Russia. Moscow rejected claims that it had imposed restrictions on monitors, however. Critics also pointed to pressure on voters to cast their ballots, especially employees of state-run organizations. The refusal of the Russian election authorities to register a number of candidates from Russia's opposition due to 'irregularities' in their applications was also cited, as was the lack of media coverage of the candidates given permission to stand. A CIS election monitoring mission said the elections had been held in full accordance with the law. The CIS is an alliance of a number of former Soviet republics. Election monitors from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe have yet to comment on the polls.

Angressa, without doubt Kasparov is a Western puppet and a clown. Kasparov discredited his name and his credibility a long time ago. I am embarrassed that he is half-Armenian. I rather take pride in Armenians like Sergei Lavrov, Arthur Chilingarov and Michael Poghosian. Russians should do with Kasparov as they please. I have made several comments about him in this thread in the past. The following are the posts:

And here is the great interview Putin gave the Times Magazine where he addressed the issue concerning Kasparov's love of speaking English in Russia:

Here is a comment American activist Justin Raimondo has made about Kasparov:

Kasparov, aside from his well-known exploits in the game of chess, is a pawn of American neoconservatives: his real constituency isn't in Russia, where he remains an obscure political figure, but in Washington, D.C., where he stands amid such neocon luminaries as Richard Perle, Douglas Feith, and James Woolsey as a member of the Center for Security Policy. The Center is a major neocon propaganda outfit headed by longtime neocon activist Frank Gaffney, whose name is virtually synonymous with the military-industrial complex. Kasparov served on the Center's National Security Advisory Council along with Woolsey.

And this applies very well to what levin aims to do in Armenia.

His other cousin in arms, and in blood, the rabid wolf Kasparov is also trying to stir things up in Russia. Same mentality, same methods, same background , one a chessplayer, the other a spineless philosophysing bookworm, same aims and goals, same paymasters. Palladins of the chosen, planted in society to cause dissension, to form fifth columns, to sow discord, to incite sedition and ultimately betray their nations. Levon, a treasonous democratic hyena. The dastardly mongols are having a field day laughing at us. They will bestow a medal of honor to the scavenger Levon. Levon's dream is that of a rose revolution with the star of david as the new standard. Kocharian must get implacably tough against these renegades and rag tag gang of malcontents and nation wreckers.
For the first time in more than 600 years, Armenia is free and independent, and we are therefore obligated
to place our national interests ahead of our personal gains or aspirations.

                Armenia Assaulted by Orange Agents

Perhaps the empire just doesn’t get it. They need to re-examine their despicable, foolish and devious scheme to bring an orange scenario to an embattled, besieged Armenia. Under blockade by neighboring Turkey and Azerbaijan, Armenia continues to prosper despite some instances of corruption and economic isolation. Armenia is not fertile ground for any sort of orange scenario. Armenians are generally politically astute, pro-Russian and not easily swayed. They are also acutely aware of the fact that there is no future for them as vassals of the empire.

Armenian history is said to be 12,000 years old, and Mt. Ararat is the historic scene where Noah‘s Ark is said to have rested, a revered and treasured Armenian landmark. An archeologist’s dream come true, Armenia is a land of quaint churches and elaborately and meticulously carved khatchkars (Orthodox crosses). Constant and reliable, the centuries old friendship and alliance with Russia is unshakable. Most Armenians are aware of the fact that there probably would be no Armenia if not for Russia. No plots or schemes by the empire are going to change that reality.

The empire also wins no friends among Armenians for its consistent policy of Genocide denial. These policies go beyond the geo-political considerations given as an excuse, such as the US base in occupied Western Armenia, under control of Turkey and their alliances with Armenian enemies Turkey, Israel and Azerbaijan. And then there are the oil pipelines…constructed to bypass Armenia, a country in a strategic position between east and west, a crossroads as it were. As a result of the Armenian Genocide of 1894-1923, Armenians lost most of their homeland and over 1.5 million Armenians were murdered in the most horrendous and brutal fashion imaginable and unimaginable. To this day, no Nuremberg trials, no compensation or apology have occurred. Therefore, the memory of this tragedy in an ongoing issue of importance to Armenians.

In Armenia, Levon Ter-Petrosian is generally despised for his corrupt ruinous policies while President of Armenia. He is also despised for proffering the notion that the recently liberated Armenian land of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) should be returned to Azerbaijan. Artsakh is now an independent country. The US regime is financially backing Ter-Petrosian and causing trouble in the background. Ter-Petrosian had the strange idea that he had a snowball’s chance in hell of winning an election to be President. Fat chance. Now he sends agitators to do his bidding, a la Soros funding, all the best agitators money and the empire can buy.

On Public Armenian Television, Armenian Parliament Speaker Tigran Torosian told the following of his knowledge of events: “These people decided who the winner is five minutes after the election. This is their characteristic feature. I learned about my alleged resignation from journalists. Levon Ter-Petrosian and his team-mates have exhausted the sources of lies which exceed all possible borders,” the speaker said. “They spread lies about all and offense all those who are not with them. They are filled with hatred and revenge,” he said. "OK, let's say all the grenades, pistols and automatics were planted by the regime, what do you have to say about all those hooligans with rods and sticks, beating the police, throwing bricks and stones, burning cars including busses and an ambulance, looting shops and supermarkets?"

According to various local reports, 8 persons were killed in orange demonstrations as the Army was called in to restore the peace. They also report that Opera and Republican Square are swarming with army troops and military police armed to the teeth with AK-47s, belt-fed battle rifles and there are dozens of light tanks in both locations. In addition to that, there are troops scattered in posts all over the city and on all the roads into the city. One hundred and thirty-one persons were reported injured in the March 1 disturbances. An on the scene observer sent this report: "Hi, this morning I walked from the Opera House until Mashtoz Underpass. Everything was just fine. Police closed the underpass toward city hall and near the French embassy where they made a mess. My friend 8:30 at night went everywhere with the exception of closed areas and found calm...all shops are open and traffic is normal, 8 people got killed and about 30 people got arrested for looting, all young guys."

Interior troops and police officers suffered bullet wounds and injuries in the March 1 clashes with rioters in Yerevan. On his visit to the hospital, President Kocharian was accompanied by police chief Hayk Harutyunian and other officials. Kocharian went from one hospital ward to another and spoke to officers and servicemen. Hospital chief, Arthur Petrosian, said they admitted 33 wounded officers and servicemen on March 1 until 8.30 pm and 27 others after 9 pm. He said 11 received bullet wounds, eight were hospitalized with heavy symptoms of gas poisoning, 2 received knife wounds. Seven servicemen went to their quarters after receiving first aid and 11 others were operated on. The chief of the hospital said their condition is satisfactory now.

At the end of February, prior to the breakout of violence, a vehicle was apprehended trying to enter the country loaded with weapons and ammunition. On March 1, 2008, Armenia’s President Robert Kocharian declared a 2-day state of emergency in compliance of article 55.6 of the RA (Republic of Armenia) Constitution (threat to state and population security). Fortunately, anti-terrorist, anti-orange scenario joint exercises were held by Armenia and Russia in anticipation of such occurrences. Meanwhile the empire is mouthing duplicitous, hypocritical words about “excessive use of force.”

Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Terry Davis said, “The state of emergency suspends the application of several rights and freedoms protected by the European Convention on Human Rights. Under Article 15 of the Convention the Armenian Government must inform me of the measures which it has taken and the reasons therefore. I expect that they will do so without any delay,” the Council of Europe press division reports. The recent presidential elections in Armenia saw Serzh Sarksyan, Kocharian’s number two man, elected as President of Armenia. The voting result was unmistakable: Serzh Sarkisyan - 862,369 (52,82%) votes, Levon Ter-Petrosian – 351,222 (21,5%).votes.

The February 19th presidential elections were not only characterized as `free and fair' by the CIS observers, but also received the positive assessments of the Western observation missions. The observation mission of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, which stands out in terms of its strict and meticulous attitude towards the electoral processes held in former USSR territories, clearly recorded that, `The presidential elections held in Armenia on February 19 were mostly in line with the commitments to the OSCE and the Council of Europe.” But this didn’t satisfy the orange agitators. Kocharian, throughout his term as President, has had a warm, brotherly relationship with his counterpart in Russia, Vladimir Putin. Like the outgoing president, Robert Kocharian, Mr. Sarkisyan is from Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh). Both men were commanders in the war.

The newly elected Armenian President released this message to the people: “Dear Compatriots, In consequence of the recent events, our people suffered great losses. There are casualties among policemen, who performed their duty, and among protesters, who fell under the influence of a group of people. Hundreds of civilians suffered from illegal acts of the radical opposition. Leaders of the co-called ‘movement’ made targets of their own supporters and policemen to suit their own ends. The initiators of disorders must answer for their deeds before the law, history and generations. With pain, I conceive that our compatriots fell victim to blind hatred of some individuals. I share your grief and wish you courage and strength to overcome this tragedy…”

As the cleanup crew mitigates the after effects of the recent lawlessness, one can only hope that the street sweepers will also sweep away the trash known as orange agent provocateurs and leave this proud, struggling nation in peace.

                • Re: The Rise of the Russian Empire: Russo-Armenian Relations

Another one of the global hot spots where Russian and American interests are currently clashing is South America. The situation between Venezuela and Columbia is a virtual powered keg that can explode at any moment. A major concern in Washington has been the arming of the Venezuelan military by sophisticated Russian weaponry as well as Chavez's concerted efforts at creating an international political union that is fully independent of Washington's influence. Moscow's close relationship with Venezuela is beginning to resemble that of the Soviet Union's strategic relationship with Cuba during the Cold War. With Cuba's Castro now more-or-less retired from politics, Chavez has been the one providing a new ideological push, a new political energy within South America. The biggest difference between Venezuela and Cuba, however, is that Venezuela is economically self-sufficient due to its vast oil reserves. As a result, unlike Cuba during the Soviet years, Venezuela is not dependent on Moscow for handouts, which makes for an ideal relationship between the two strategic partners. There are serious concerns in Washington that Venezuela is fast becoming an anti-United States stronghold, and a Russian outpost, within the very backyard of the United States. As a result, Washington has been strengthening its relationship with Colombia and is currently building up its military with the intention of creating a balance of power in the region. Although the Middle East and Central Asia gets much of the media coverage, there is a real risk today that a major international war will break out inside South America, most probably between Washington backed Colombia and Russian supplied Venezuela.

Latin-American crisis deepens following cross-border raid

Venezuela and Ecuador have cut diplomatic ties with Colombia in a deepening crisis over a cross-border raid by Colombian troops into Ecuador. Tensions in the region are threatening to grow into an armed conflict. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has warned that another Colombian attack could mean that war may flare up in the region. It came to a head when Colombia killed the senior FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia - Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) rebel Raul Reyes and 16 others in a cross-border skirmish in Ecuador. Colombia claims that in the raid they found proof that the Venezuelan government had paid $US 300 million to the rebels - allegations Caracas dismisses.

The stakes were raised when Chavez threatened to use Russia-purchased Sukhoi fighter jets against Colombia if it attacked Venezuela. Military analyst Ruslan Pukhov doesn’t expect a war soon. “I don't think we will see the conflict blow up very soon, but obviously such raids and such Columbian behaviour in response to Chavez might trigger one sooner or later,” Pukhov said. In fact, all three sides are equipped with Russian-made weapons, but in different quantities. In the past few years the Venezuelan government has been modernising its massive military arsenal. Venezuela was very active on the arms market in 2006, with the help of an oil-rich economy, Chavez agreed a US$3-billion-dollar arms deal with Russia. A hundred thousand Kalashnikov rifles, 24 advanced Sukhoi fighter jets and dozens of Russian helicopters were all added to Venezuela's military. The deals made Russia Caracas's main arms supplier.

The Colombian Army is using several BTR-80 armoured personnel carriers and ordered a hundred more from Russia's Rosoboronexport. Bogota's Air Force has over a dozen MI-17 helicopters and also plan to acquire MI-35 attack helicopters from Russia. “Columbian forces are more or less tailored to chase rebels like FARC. Chavez’s troops are also in a period of transformation and at this particular moment I would say the forces are more or less equal,” Pukhov added. Ecuador is also equipped with transport MI choppers. Its army mostly has U.S.-made weapons, but also has 36 of the renowned Soviet T-55 tanks. With the crisis deepening, Ecuador and Venezuela are reinforcing their troop numbers and tanks at Colombia's borders. All are poised for a possible all-out conflict and all are waiting to see who will make the next move.

Venezuela, Ecuador punish Colombia Diplomats removed, trade impeded and troops mobilized

Venezuela and Ecuador sought Monday to make Colombia pay a high diplomatic and economic price for killing a leftist rebel leader in the Ecuadoran jungle - expelling its diplomats, ordering troops to the border and largely halting trade at key points along the frontier. But Colombia quickly struck back, revealing what it said were incriminating documents seized from the rebel camp that suggest its neighbors have been secretly supporting the rebels' deadly insurgency. Colombia's national police chief said the documents show Venezuela recently paid $300 million to the rebels, among other financial and political ties that date back years, and that high-level meetings have been held between rebels and Ecuadoran officials.

And this shocker: Colombia says some documents suggest the rebels have bought and sold uranium. "When they mention negotiations for 50 kilos of uranium this means that the FARC are taking big steps in the world of terrorism to become a global aggressor. We're not talking of domestic guerrilla but transnational terrorism," Gen. Oscar Naranjo said at a news conference. Naranjo didn't give any details on when, where or from whom the uranium was allegedly bought. He provided no proof of the payment and wouldn't release copies of the documents. Both Venezuela and Ecuador dismissed his allegations as lies. They expelled Colombia's top diplomats and recalled their own. Ecuador's President Rafael Correa planned to visit five Latin American countries starting Tuesday to defend his decision to break off diplomatic relations, accusing Colombia of being an enemy of peace and lying about the raid.

Colombia said military commandos, tracking Raul Reyes through an informant, were fired upon from Ecuadoran territory. But Correa said Colombia deliberately carried out the strike beyond its borders, and that the rebels were "bombed and massacred as they slept, using precision technology." Both countries also began reinforcing their borders, mobilizing troops and tanks as Chavez warned that another Colombian attack could spark a wider South American war. Venezuelan National Guard troops and customs authorities suspended new imports and exports at the busiest border crossings. One Colombian police commander, Col. Ivan Florez, told the AP that all vehicles with Colombian license plates were being turned away from a key border crossing. Maintaining trade with Colombia, essential to Venezuela's economy, is one of many factors weighing against outright war. But the bellicose rhetoric has worried Latin American leaders. The presidents of Chile, Mexico and Brazil offered to mediate, and an emergency session of the Organization of American States was scheduled for Tuesday in Washington.

U.S. State Department spokesman Tom Casey said the United States supports Colombia's right to defend itself against the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, and called for dialogue. Colombian officials have long complained that rebels take refuge in Ecuador and Venezuela. But Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos said Monday that his government isn't moving any troops and "we have the situation under control." The rebels, who have been fighting for more than four decades for a more equitable distribution of wealth in Colombia, fund themselves largely through the cocaine trade, while holding hundreds of kidnapped hostages for ransom and political ends. The drug trafficking and kidnappings haven't helped their reputation, which is why both Correa and Chavez have denied supporting them.

Is there any evidence that Levon Ter-Petrossian pushes a xxxish agenda? It wouldn't surprise me. What's clear is that in the post-USSR era, individuals of xxxish ethnicity have hijacked the economic levers of power (although, in all honesty, xxxs have historically been brilliant economists), and have shifted focus to the political arena. There was Khodorkovsky and Berezovsky, who have been shut out of Russia, and I think attempts at political control of Russia have been decisively squashed. What's more remarkable is that even in Georgia, with a presumably miniscule Gruzinim community, you still had Patarkatsishvili making a credible push for power. Incredible!

No, as far as I know, there is no 'direct' Jewish/Zionist agenda being carried out by any of the politicians on either side of the political spectrum in Yerevan. However, some of the proposed political agendas of the opposition group lead by Levon Petrosian can indirectly serve Zionist interests.

Simply put, Levon Petrosian, the failed coup leader and former Armenian president (who is married to a Jewess), envisions Armenia without disputes with Azerbaijan and Turkey and with closer relations with US and the EU. That is fine at face value. However, the fundamental problem is that his Utopian political agenda undermines several very crucial national interests of the Armenian Republic. In order for Azeris and Turks to normalize their relations with Armenia, the Armenian Republic has to abandon two strategic parameters - independence of Nagono Karabagh and Armenian Genocide recognition/territorial demands. In order for Armenia to move closer to the US and the EU, Armenia risks upsetting its most crucial partner in the region - Russia. Levon Petrosian and company have made direct and indirect statements suggesting that they will more-or-less abandon the aforementioned aspects of Armenian national interests - Nagorno Karabagh, Armenian Genocide recognition/territorial demands, Russo-Armenian alliance - for better relations with Turkey, Azerbaijan, US and the EU.

As of today, regardless of what you may see or hear in the news media, a majority of Armenians in and out of Armenia see Levon Petrosian's political approach as suicidal for the nation and anti-national. There are various other internal socio political factors at play here as well, but that is beyond the scope of your question. Fortunately, they failed in their coup attempt. The next few months/years will be decisive. The events of last week may eventually translate into something either very positive or something very negative. Time will tell.

Note that Armenia does not have any Jewish oligarchs. There is barely several hundred Jews living in Armenia, none of them prominant as far as I know.
