I think Russia made a huge strategic mistake by refusing to deliver the S-300s to Iran despite an agreement having been made to do so.
This may have been due to pressure or even some horse-trading.

It could have given the wrong impression to others that it does not care what happens to Iran.
The reality is Iran is the underbelly of Russia and should have rejected any compromise.

Some forces ( US, Israel) are playing this game continuously while others (Russia) as and when they think they should participate.
Politics is not about the pursuit of morality nor what's right or wrong
Its about self interest at personal and national level often at odds with the above.

I highly doubt US will attack. Highly doubt. It's all talk to pressure Iran, but they can't and won't attack Iran. They'd rather settle with a nuclear Iran than have a war with Iran and all the things that come with it. Even in Israel there is opposition by some high ranking Mossad leaders against attack. Iran is not Iraq. The geography, capabilities is much different.

It all depend on their analysis as to the outcome and consequences of their action.
The problem is they could always get it wrong with all the consequences.
All you have to do is think Iraq and Afghanistan.

Given high ranking US military leaders, Israeli officials have spoken against such a war consistently, and the fact of the financial troubles of the US, coupled with the anti-war sentiment there, I highly doubt they would want to start a war. I think they will stick to sabotage and covert action (computer viruses).

The core decision making is never democratic.
A task group would have been delegated to prepare and produce a viable plan to put to action.

I would think even an analysis of the consequences would be available to the top politician(s) before any go ahead.
Its only purpose is achievement of an aim, however flawed it may be.

Those officials who speak against such actions are not in the loop.
They have not been tasked with the operation.
They do not have any decision making authority therefore do not have all the detailed facts.
Their purpose could also be diversionary to catch the opposition confused and off guard.

It also gives an air of democracy in action.
“After great consideration and debate, the balance of opinion was in favour of action being taken”.

Any truths available after the event is only academic.

could this mean there's a possibility of S-400 deployment there in coming years?

My bet is that they will initiate aerial bombardments, and continue with the cyber-war and special forces operations to assassinate Iranian scientists, and in case of the bombings, to blow up military targets. I too thought that the West wouldn't attack Iran, but it seems that the hubris of policy-makers in Washington, and to a lesser extent in Brussels, has gotten the better of them. If they go into Syria, then I will be even more convinced that they're planning to attack Iran next.
For the first time in more than 600 years, Armenia is free and independent, and we are therefore obligated
to place our national interests ahead of our personal gains or aspirations.
