Guys, did anyone READ that post in German? I think it's fairly safe to say the name is indeed cognate to "guter Jan" (Low German I suppose with the "d" rather than "t") not anything to do with Armenia! Sounds rather more plausible to me :-P
My friends grandfather was in the SS as a tiger tank commander, not sure of the exact definition but he had a group of tanks under his command. He obviously was well studied on his immediate commanding officers.
When I first met him and introduced myself, he said, ahhh and Armenian, My general was Armenian, Heinz Guderian. Which began a long WWII conversation.
