Also western armenian sounds more similar to Turkish than Eastern Armenian (I believe that's a plus for Eastern armenian). So, please stop trying to put down the dialect that is actually spoken and understood in Armenia. That's the dialect with which Serzh speaks and much more Armenians speak with Eastern than Western.
I should've made it more clear that I was just teasing. Each dialect has its postives and negatives. I also find it hard to believe that you can 'barely' understand Western Armenian as a native speaker of Armenian.

And as a side note, about the same number of people speak Eastern and Western dialects. However, this is soon to change in the coming generations unfortunately.

Well, I understand it to the most part (especially when its spoken slowly), but the words and some of the grammar is different which sometimes throws me off, but part of the reason is that I rarely hear western armenian so I'm not used to it. They say if a native eastern armenian speaker listens to western armenian long enough, they will able to understand it almost fully. Yes it unfortunate that in future generations there will probably be a very small number of western armenian speakers left. While there will be still many Eastern armenian speakers left. Sad, sad, that armenians in diaspora get assimilated like this

armenian language need to be modernized and should be simplified. For instance hardly you find any literate who knows the rules of correct autograph, such as who knows when you use the short r and when the long r ,similar applies for ch ,and k letters.Lets simplify and prepare on line dictionaries (which there is not more than english-armenian version ) with their pronunciation attached.

I think English if you don't already speak it. Russian, Arabic, Spanish, and French are also good languages to learn, as they'll pretty much get you around most of the world

I would recommend you learn the languages of your neighbouring people, i.e. Farsi, Arabic, maybe even Kurdish or Turkish if you please (or if you decide not to speak the language of those who killed you :P). Armenians at a point spoke Aramaic so I would also recommend Assyrian.
