Difference between «էր» and «եղաւ»?

Just when to use one or the other. I know you're supposed to use «էր» for things that happened in the past that were interrupted and «եղաւ» for things that happened at a specific time/date. I guess I still don't get when either is properly used, although I am assuming «էր» is generally used more than «եղաւ».

How is it confusing? Just look at their English equivalents to understand better. «էր» is "to be" ( in the past), while "եղաւ" is "to become" (in the past). Now can you see where you are wrong in the sentences?
