Women to form 30 % of Armenian government

YEREVAN. - Armenian Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs submitted gender policy for 2011-2015 to the government, informs government official website.

The ministry notes that despite gender equality secured by the Constitution, women in Armenia still face hidden discrimination. Attitude towards women in the Armenian society does not meet internationally accepted norms. Armenia is behind many European states on the level of poverty and participation in the governance.

The program provides measures to increase women’s participation in legislative and executive bodies to 30%.

Because removing hims will make him more of a threat than he is right now; If you remove him you give him power and legitimacy but if you ignore it and start destroying him by improving the points where he attacks you, you finish him of for ever.

For all the chest beating and flag wahingthat the dashnaks do why cant they remove this pest called LTP? This guy is a serious threat to our national security yet the dashnaks and everyone else seems to be ok with him parading around in Hayastan. The dashnaks would gladly kill anyone including their own members if they suspected him of being a trator to the party but being a trator to Armenia i guess is not a capitol offence?

Serzh is doing the right thing in being open to the opposition. In one way, him doing that, weakens the opposition and betters the public opinion about him. I really can't stand the hypocrisy of the Levon movement - if only Levon was as kind as Serzh during his presidency.

Sargsyan to Ter-Petrosian: Checkmate?

Watching the interplay between Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and opposition leader (and ex-President) Levon Ter-Petrosian is often like watching two men playing an intensive game of chess.

Sargsyan made a move yesterday, on the eve of yet another Ter-Petrosian rally in Yerevan, and it was all about good vibrations.

In April 27 comments, Sargsyan commended Ter-Petrosian's Armenian National Congress and friends for " ongoing rallies [and] speeches that are not aimed at splitting society, that are not aimed at developing the notions of smashing or destroying, [and] are aimed at shifting the political struggle to certain podiums," RFE/RL reported.

Three years ago, the government painted quite a different picture of the ANC and pals. In the past few weeks, though, with Middle East uprisings as a backdrop, the government has pledged a more thorough investigation of the police response to the 2008 demonstrations, and has granted the ANC access to Yerevan's Liberty Square for its April 28 rally.

One commentator noted that if Sargsyan grants all of the ANC's requests, the movement eventually "risks losing a significant part its supporters."

In his usual deadline-setting style (and, some would argue, anticipating Sargsyan's moves), Ter-Petrosian had earlier defined April 28 as the date that would mark either "the beginning of dialogue" between the opposition and government or "the final watershed between the authorities and the public."

Looks like the Opposition is on a optimistic high....

I watched the rally this morning and it was same old usual crap with opposition inflating numbers and a state of apathy even among the people there. Highlight of the rally was Aram Manukyan saying that 200 people are leaving Armenia daily and then correcting his figure to 200-250, all the while forgetting that during LTP rule 1000 people were leaving on a daily basis. Lots of comparisons to the Arab revolutions by the speakers and some called for similar steps to be taken. Next rally scheduled for May 30.

Velvet revolution starts in Armenia – opposition

YEREVAN. - A velvet revolution has started in Armenia, said Levon Zurabyan, member of the opposition Armenian National Congress.

Speaking at a rally held in Armenia’s capital Zurabyan noted that after three years of repressions the authorities were urged to realize that they cannot but reckon with the ANC.

“People are slowly taking control of domestic political processes,” Zurabyan said adding that we are witnesses of rapid developments.

Oppositionist called on the participants to continue struggle against “criminal and oligarchic regime”.

The participants welcomed seven ANC activists who still remain under arrest.
