I'm for legal unions but I feel pretty uneasy when it comes to having children. I mean what Elton John did was definitely a bad idea, and not only because he and his partner belong to the same sex. Even if it was a het couple, it'd be wrong wrong wrong.
Also, I don't like ramming whatever down people's throats, such as in Tigranakert's example. It's not that way that you can teach people to be "tolerant".

i'm admittedly nervous about having children with my Armenian boyfriend. their mother is bisexual and not Armenian. from that alone i know they'll face a lot of ridicule and rough times. i hope not nearly as much as i have.

there is no way to teach tolerance. that's up to the individual

Well, most people don't care how old Elton John is... they just say "who cares, the kid is going to be rich". Great, I'm sure the kid won't be exploited his whole life much like his old man (no pun intended).

Parades started at a time when gays suffered active harassment from police, mobsters and self-appointed "vigilantes", to show in a very '70-ish way that they wouldn't hide any longer.
Anyway, now they're just a revelry, often a pretty vulgar one, and completely useless as an activist tactic. And the music sucks

The problem with African-Americans is that they were NOT immigrants. They were kidnapped and brought there as slaves, and when slavery was abolished they were subdued through segregation and lynching. Now there are immigrants from Africa but originally the term referred to the slaves' descendants.

Armenian first. You don't even have to be gay to join - just don't join to bash them or their efforts either

they only arranged it the way they did because it was easier and "catchier" to say.

for example:
say outloud: GAL-usssssssss
now try: SUH-laggggggg (you wind up saying "guh guh guh..")

It could've been SALAG, but GALAS comes off the tongue faster. it's a preference thing. it still means what you're suggesting.

For example "African American" suggests as though they are different than other Americans when in fact all Americans are immigrants. They are merely assimilated Africans, culturally there is nothing African about them aside from their roots.

That's what I mean. It segregates people. It should be called Society of Armenians for Gays and Lesbians. Basically Armenians who support Gays and Lesbians regardless of their orientation. Their sponsors and speakers probably aren't even gay.

GALAS, is for gay/lesbian armenians.

That's what I mean. It segregates people. It should be called Society of Armenians for Gays and Lesbians. Basically Armenians who support Gays and Lesbians regardless of their orientation. Their sponsors and speakers probably aren't even gay.

I don't like the GALAS label. A society is made up of people, their sexual orientation doesn't give them a right to be part of a separate society.

I never understood the marches/parades. What kind of a message is that? Free advertising for dating service?
The only time i would participate in a parade under a LGBT banner would be if i signed on with a group supporting a cause.
In fact, I joined GALAS (Gay And Lesbian Armenian Society) in their 'march' together at the Los Angeles AIDS research fundraising walk this last year. At least it's for a cause. "LGBT" is not a "cause," it's who you are (if applicable). what's a "cause" is changing legislation or something.
