Re: Preventing Sexual Revolution in Armenia

Because it'd be taboo... and as we also know that when people are denied something, they want it more. the influence doesn't have to be the media.

That only works for economics and "free sex" or the "sexual revolution" made sex more expensive

You probably don't understand this as you are American, but assimilation is the greatest threat to Armenians, next to Turks and Azeris. With such a large diaspora it is imperative we prevent widespread assimilation. The American/western culture is like a spell that draws immigrants to forget their native, rich roots and fall into a pot of mostly degraded culture and mindset, and become "a part of the group" but at the expense of abandoning your culture, upbringing, and at times, your family.

Yes, I have a completely different standpoint, especially as an American.
I used to hate them, even though I'm one myself; especially in high school. I went to an international school so I got to meet a lot of different cultures...
It was imperative at that school that we learn more about our own cultures and share it with others. It wasn't until college that I realized this mentality was not just at my high school.
America overall's biggest prized "possession", if you will, is the fact we have so much diversity and of different cultures. Yes, we hae our mainstreams, but we do not also say you have to leave your culture. If you don't like it, then don't participate is the attitude. It is imperative now that many people know more than one language, besides English. A lot of that we may get in school, some people get it because of their families.

After studying a lot about culture through history, anthropology, psychology, and sociology, i'm not at all surprised you feel assimilation is a big threat. We've all seen what it can do in a negative light. Have you noticed it's also used as a means to preserve?
Imagine all the documentaries that exist, the TV shows (ever seen a cooking show about "culture" food? Safaris?), travel agents, books (read "The Underdogs" for a really good idea of what I mean by this), Rosetta Stone and other "language learning" tools, global newspapers, our own neighborhoods. Culture and the diversity of it hasn't died in America. We thrive on it to prove to the rest of the world that we're "tolerant" of others ideas. It's controversial. It's real. When culture dies is when youth completely abandon what their culture is and try to culminate their own -- eventually, a lot realize, as they get older, that there's a way to bridge the gap. Use the mainstream to their advantage.

Who is our forum sexual expert to arbiter that kind of discussions? I think we should elect someone with expertise, on democratic bases, to do the job.

Although, may be, some other creatures are more natural, knowledgeable/sincere in the area to learn from.

Almost all nations of the west have stable population growth and lower std rates. It's the non western countries which are over populated and have higher std rates.

While not all std's have been around for all time, there have been std's since recorded history practically began and there have always been sudden pandemics of them. And overpopulation has always existed, otherwise we'd never have even gotten to a billion people.

Does anyone here actually believe that the "Sexual Revolution" would still not happen even without the West's influence?

thank you for pointing all that out.

I'd also like to point out that time and time again, in the USA and the west, it's usually the kids who don't get sex ed (or anywhere in the world for that matter) who become the ones who have an unplanned pregnancy, or become infected with an std as opposed to the ones who are taught about practicing safe sex and use contraceptives and birth control

We understand the danger's of assimilation, but us diasporans have nothing to do with this thread. The topic is preventing the sexual revolution from effecting Armenians in Armenia

And while you may be right that acting more American will make the diaspora in the USA assimilate faster, you fail to see that even if the "sexual revolution" took place in Armenia that at the end of the day Armenians there would still be Armenian.

Hayastantsis aren't just gonna suddenly learn English and declare Armenian as the 51st state of the USA, or learn Turkish and leave to go screw around with Turks and Azeris. At the end of the day even if all of the hayastantsi youth became crazed sex addicts, they'd still only be having sex with each other and still be Armenian.

The important thing is to prepare the youth instead of trying to keep them from having sex by never talking about it. Imagine how life would better in so many countries across South America, Africa, and Asia, if in the past 5 decades they'd have taught their children about practicing safe sex instead of hoping that there kids just wouldn't have sex until they were married.
