Forum Rules (Everyone Must Read!!!)

1] What you CAN NOT post.

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this forum to post any material which is:
- abusive
- vulgar
- hateful
- harassing
- personal attacks
- obscene

You also may not:
- post images that are too large (max is 500*500px)
- post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or cited properly.
- post in UPPER CASE, which is considered yelling
- post messages which insult the Armenians, Armenian culture, traditions, etc
- post racist or other intentionally insensitive material that insults or attacks another culture (including Turks)

The Ankap thread is excluded from the strict rules because that place is more relaxed and you can vent and engage in light insults and humor. Notice it's not a blank ticket, but just a place to vent. If you go into the Ankap thread, you enter at your own risk of being clowned on.
What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This reduces the chances of double-posting and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Using the search function will identify existing threads on the topic so we do not have multiple threads on the same topic.

3] Keep the focus.

Each forum has a focus on a certain topic. Questions outside the scope of a certain forum will either be moved to the appropriate forum, closed, or simply be deleted. Please post your topic in the most appropriate forum. Users that keep doing this will be warned, then banned.

4] Behave as you would in a public location.

This forum is no different than a public place. Behave yourself and act like a decent human being (i.e. be respectful). If you're unable to do so, you're not welcome here and will be made to leave.

5] Respect the authority of moderators/admins.

Public discussions of moderator/admin actions are not allowed on the forum. It is also prohibited to protest moderator actions in titles, avatars, and signatures. If you don't like something that a moderator did, PM or email the moderator and try your best to resolve the problem or difference in private.

6] Promotion of sites or products is not permitted.

Advertisements are not allowed in this venue. No blatant advertising or solicitations of or for business is prohibited.
This includes, but not limited to, personal resumes and links to products or
services with which the poster is affiliated, whether or not a fee is charged
for the product or service. Spamming, in which a user posts the same message repeatedly, is also prohibited.

7] We retain the right to remove any posts and/or Members for any reason, without prior notice.

- PLEASE READ -

Members are welcome to read posts and though we encourage your active participation in the forum, it is not required. If you do participate by posting, however, we expect that on the whole you contribute something to the forum. This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

8] These Rules & Guidelines may be amended at any time. (last update September 17, 2009)

If you believe an individual is repeatedly breaking the rules, please report to admin/moderator.

  • How does Armenia go about becoming self sustainable?

How does Armenia go about becoming self sustainable? Surely there must be a way to become more prosperous without the blockade ending.

For instance, I recently read that about 37% of Armenia's arable land (land that can be used for farming) is either not used, or is misused. If this were to be fixed, it could give more jobs to people through farming and also lower food costs.

Any other ideas on what could be done?

    Technology.

We need to make Armenia what it was during Soviet times. Silicon Valley of the region. Bring bright minds to the country, create a country of innovation, with such technology we can become more sufficient in many aspects. Already we are doing well in IT and the tech sphere, we need to improve and improve. Start with education. Make doing business easier in Armenia.

The biggest issue facing Armenia is physical security. Since we are not able to guerantee security to our citizens we cannot hope to grow like we should as a nation state. You take out the Russian militery base and we are sitting ducks for our neighbor to the west. We need the russians therefore we are a dependent state and dependent state cannot always act in its own interest. I am amazed that Serj has been able to act as independent as he has(atleast it seems that way anyways) but even he knows there are limitations because of the security issues we face. We can still grow as a country but what we need to be truely independent is security.

What can we in the diaspora do to help Armenia achieve this?

In a way, the diaspora supports and maintains Armenia's lack of self sustainability. If it were not for the foreign remittances, Armenia's economy would probably collapse, and if it were not for the ease of migration out of Armenia and into the diaspora, there would be much more poverty in Armenia and probably severe social unrest. So the diaspora needs to promote and help create conditions in Armenia that would stop the diaspora growing and make Armenia no longer need the diaspora.

I found the extent of environmental destruction in Armenia to be shocking, and especially disturbing given Armenia's small size. A lot of it dates back to Soviet-era misuse (mining, quarrying, and so on) and post-Soviet economic collapse (outside of Yerevan the country is littered with derelict factories and houses) - but there has been no attempt at clearing any of that up. Instead, all there has been is even more destruction in new areas thanks to oligarch-owned mines. Agriculture is mostly neglected by the government - there is no incentive for it to encourage small producers in Armenia because they would compete with the foodstuffs imported and sold through the oligarch monopolies. What Armenia needs to be more self-sustainable is greater democracy, greater social freedoms, a proper rule of law that protects individuals from the corrupt and powerful, and complete economic openness.

I'm actually trying to figure out ways to do this. This is for a paper and possibly a project. Things I am considering include:

-Developing a film industry with use of natural resources and creative talent
-Improving access to small business supplies and technology (perhaps small loans and group shipping for large orders going to the same places)
-Creating/improving schools that teach computer/engineering skills and legal processes for starting a business
-A government transparency organization to reveal corruption

If you have any thoughts on these or ideas in general, please let me know.

Armenia without security cannot have any of those things. There is a hierarchy of needs then wants and you cannot get to the wants unless you have what you need first.

How can Armenia gain security? A stronger military? Investing in defense technology?

i would say the economy is number one need for any country. Without economy you can not have a military to protect your borders, you cannot buy all those fancy weapons needed to protect your borders.Without an economy your people cannot feed themselves and will abandon the country, it is happening today! So tell me how the situation today is helping the security of Armenia? It seems security is being used as an excuse by the government and its supporters to do what they see fit and the supporters excuse everything that is being done.
