    Re: Writers

    A short list of my favorite American short stories:
    “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce;
    “Kneel to the Rising Sun” by Erskine Caldwell;
    “The Killers" by Ernest Hemingway;
    “The Princess with the Golden Hair” by Edmund Wilson;
    “For Esme – with Love and Squalor” by J.D. Salinger.

      A nation whose imams and priests outnumber its intellectuals is a nation on its way to the devil.

        Re: Writers

        Voltaire once remarked to a friend: "In literature, if you fail, they look down at you with contempt; if you succeed, they hate you." Judging by the amount of hate mail I get, I must be going places.

          I was silenced because I could not be slaughtered. And I could not be slaughtered because they don't slaughter writers in a democracy.

            GETTING INVOLVED
            *******************************
            “If you want to change things,
            why don’t you get involved?”
            “I am involved already.”
            “When, how, where?”
            “I am involved in literature.”
            *
            In the eyes of our pro-involvement advocates
            literature doesn’t count because it equates
            with mental masturbation.

              Re: Writers

              The only way to make money as a writer, Flaubtert once said, is by flattering the public. Zohrab put it more bluntly when he said, anyone can engage in prostitution, including lawyers (he was one). Which reminds me of the American joke: "Please, don't tell my mother I am a lawyer. She thinks I am a pimp."

                Writing for Armenians is a waste of time
                and our writers – all 599 (or is it 722) of them –
                have made no difference.

                I envy Armenian writers who write for an odar audience.
                Consider Raffi Khachadourian who contributes regularly
                fascinating essays to the NEW YORKER.

                Consider his recent essay on tavlu which i did not read
                but I suspect millions around the world did.

                  Because our best and brightest did not survive, our worthless and worst brag about their genius for survival.
