Hilmar Kaiser on Armenian Genocide denial

Research on the Armenian Genocide has experienced a remarkable growth in recent years. Survivors' memoirs, editions of diplomatic documents, eyewitness accounts by missionaries and others, case studies, and monographic research on various aspects of the Genocide provide informed insights into the nature of the crime.

A considerable number of the available studies on the subject have involved the denial of this genocide. Deniers allege that the Ottoman government never persecuted systematically or attempted to exterminate the empire's Armenian population. On the contrary, one is asked to believe that it was the Armenians who killed a substantial part of the Muslim population in what is presented as a "civil war". Moreover Armenians are blamed for having started this civil war in order to assist the Russian army's advance on the Eastern front and to bring down the Ottoman government. Deniers maintain that relatively few Armenians died in connection with what they claim to have been a legitimate act of Ottoman government self-defense.

Denial of genocide is not unique to the Armenian case. As with other crimes, perpetrators try to avoid punishment by obstructing investigation and research. Those engaged in denial employ a multitude of techniques. These methods cover a wide range of activities, from simply ignoring the established historical record to the intimidation of scholars.

Denial of both the Holocaust and the Armenian Genocide was initiated by the perpetrators immediately upon commencement of the extermination of their targeted victims. However, denial of the Armenian Genocide differs significantly from that of the Holocaust. Whereas the Nazi Germans were permanently crippled by their defeat in World War II, the Ottoman government was able to reorganize itself following defeat. With slightly altered personnel, the government that had been the "Committee of Union and Progress" (CUP), which was responsible for the Armenian Genocide, was able to reemerge by way of the nationalist movement, ostensibly led by Mustafa Kemal Pasha. Thus, the CUP cadres managed to keep control to Turkish politics for many years to come and were able to perpetuate their denial propaganda as the official Turkish historical thesis on the Armenian Genocide. This denial was, and today still is, formulated in official Turkish government publications and distributed worldwide.

loseyourname - what did winoman say that was not "appropriate" i havent read a thing that was not appropriate... if he responded aggressively it was to an original post of an insult... nonetheless i have read harsher wording on behalf of anonymouse and the majority of the turks... actually i have written worse things... what is the problem...?

winoman adds sanity to this forum and brings the best information to the discussion in the most level headed logical manner...

anywho- i like redbrig - although he may be young thats why he is sometimes more emotional... but i think his heart is in the right place and he will too figure out that calm, organized, controlled, persistence is the way to fight this - after all its been 90 years...

Wino's opening post to an otherwise friendly thread was to call the poster a 'pig.' Doing so isn't going to accomplish anything other than starting a fight. Because Tur-friend has already started fights, and was apparently here primarily to do that, he was removed. Nonetheless, anyone that feels the need to spread that fighting to threads without fighting, or to escalate the fight in a thread with fighting will be warned. It is 1 warning point out of 10 that you are allowed. It is not the end of the world. If you violate the forum guidelines, that is what happens; again, regardless of why you violated the guidelines. The continued insinuation that I don't understand Wino's strong feelings about this matter make absolutely no difference. Any number of people can have equally strong feelings about any number of matters. That also makes no difference. Keep your negative feelings to yourself or express them in a constructive manner. Do not, ever, escalate an already volatile situation, for any reason. You will be warned. Anybody will be. Every post you make has to be made within the guidelines of the forum. Winoman has a particular history here of lashing out maliciously and hurling personal insults at other posters - in fact, here is here implicitly insulting me by highlighting what he sees as an emotional deficiency on my part. You and Anonymouse have done the same thing in the past, and you have both been warned as well. It is time to quit discussing and move on with your forum lives. Unless the rules change - rules that I do not make - every situation like this will continue to be dealth with in the same manner, regardless of whether or not you like it and regardless of whether or not you feel it is justified. Think of me as a robot, mindlessly going through threads looking for violations of guidelines and doling out the appropriate corrective measures, whether it be editing, deletion, closing of the thread, warning, suspending, or banning members. None of these actions I take are influenced in any way by your continued requests and attempts to argue. It makes absolutely no difference to me.
