Poor Israel, if the Armenian Genocide is recognized in the U.S., they'll lose one of their two trading partners. Boohoohoo. So, because an artificial nation was created as a form of restitution for the J-ews, they cannot recognize the Armenian Genocide at the political level and neither can the U.S. because it may damage Israel. Well, Siamanto, we are both kind of right about the International Herald Tribune.

It appears to be a European affiliate of the New York Times edited in Paris. Thus, it would be fair to call it a French Newspaper, almost. It certainly is a European newspaper. But, there is no European state per se, yes, yes, European Union. Yet, France still remains and the Atlantic edition is originating from Paris. Hence, French newspaper.

I did not mean that you were "wrong," I would have used the word "clarification."

You can continue to call it "French" as long as the reader is aware that

Just joking...considering that the townonline-URL was repeated, it's - i.e. the URL - probably a "typo?" LOL I hope so.

I think the real story here is that our so-called American-Armenian leaders are unable to control the message in media channels. Even as Foxman reveals his ugliness, over and over again, with actions and words, he has the ability to control the spin despite all the firepower he has provided the American media to help dig his figurative death as a viable American J-ewish leader.

The only national lobby leader to speak is Mr. Hamparian and it is more often than not in an 'also ran' position.

As I've said earlier:

It's still too risky and dangerous out there...for "heroes!" As in the past, they will probably wait until it's safe enough to flip-flop, claim victory as if it was their battle, brag about it and try to discredit those who have, actually, made the difference as "irresponsible adventurists"...just like professional opportunists would do.

Have you noticed how they have, suddenly, became more assertive right after the ADL "changed" it's stance???



Basically, I agree with the rest of your post - including, Clooney's obvious hypocrisy; however, I'm surprised that you have missed to mention the "most atrocious of all genocides" i.e. the killings of Muslim Bosnians during the dismantlement of Yougoslavia.

So how come the ADL and Foxman do not follow suit re: a genocide commission with Turkey.

Why would any respectable historian, scholar, writer, victim or witness that values their freedom and liberty step foot in Turkey or any other forum to debate this issue with Turkish nationalists and ultra nationalists. If they cannot imprison you, they intimidate you, threaten you or kill you to squash your voice. cf. Palmuk, Ankam, Dink.

How did the young turks gather our intellectuals? They tricked them to show up somewhere. And, were the Young Turks comprised partially of J-ews. Yes.

Does Foxman want to debate this on National TV, mano y mano with a Scholar of Armenian history. No.

He doesn't have the chutzpah. His brain is full of schmaltz and someone needs to pull the media club from his hands. Enough is enough.

If any one person is responsible for increasing hatred from a pulpit based on anti-bias, it is Mr. Foxman.

Let's make it easy. Here are the findings of fact supporting H.R. 106:

1) The Armenian Genocide was conceived and carried out by the Ottoman Empire from 1915 to 1923, resulting in the deportation of nearly 2,000,000 Armenians, of whom 1,500,000 men, women, and children were killed, 500,000 survivors were expelled from their homes, and which succeeded in the elimination of the over 2,500-year presence of Armenians in their historic homeland.

(2) On May 24, 1915, the Allied Powers, England, France, and Russia, jointly issued a statement explicitly charging for the first time ever another government of committing `a crime against humanity'.

(3) This joint statement stated `the Allied Governments announce publicly to the Sublime Porte that they will hold personally responsible for these crimes all members of the Ottoman Government, as well as those of their agents who are implicated in such massacres'.

(4) The post-World War I Turkish Government indicted the top leaders involved in the `organization and execution' of the Armenian Genocide and in the `massacre and destruction of the Armenians'.

(5) In a series of courts-martial, officials of the Young Turk Regime were tried and convicted, as charged, for organizing and executing massacres against the Armenian people.

(6) The chief organizers of the Armenian Genocide, Minister of War Enver, Minister of the Interior Talaat, and Minister of the Navy Jemal were all condemned to death for their crimes, however, the verdicts of the courts were not enforced.

(7) The Armenian Genocide and these domestic judicial failures are documented with overwhelming evidence in the national archives of Austria, France, Germany, Great Britain, Russia, the United States, the Vatican and many other countries, and this vast body of evidence attests to the same facts, the same events, and the same consequences.

(8) The United States National Archives and Record Administration holds extensive and thorough documentation on the Armenian Genocide, especially in its holdings under Record Group 59 of the United States Department of State, files 867.00 and 867.40, which are open and widely available to the public and interested institutions.

(9) The Honorable Henry Morgenthau, United States Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1913 to 1916, organized and led protests by officials of many countries, among them the allies of the Ottoman Empire, against the Armenian Genocide.

(10) Ambassador Morgenthau explicitly described to the United States Department of State the policy of the Government of the Ottoman Empire as `a campaign of race extermination,' and was instructed on July 16, 1915, by United States Secretary of State Robert Lansing that the `Department approves your procedure . . . to stop Armenian persecution'.

(11) Senate Concurrent Resolution 12 of February 9, 1916, resolved that `the President of the United States be respectfully asked to designate a day on which the citizens of this country may give expression to their sympathy by contributing funds now being raised for the relief of the Armenians', who at the time were enduring `starvation, disease, and untold suffering'.

(12) President Woodrow Wilson concurred and also encouraged the formation of the organization known as Near East Relief, chartered by an Act of Congress, which contributed some $116,000,000 from 1915 to 1930 to aid Armenian Genocide survivors, including 132,000 orphans who became foster children of the American people.

(13) Senate Resolution 359, dated May 11, 1920, stated in part, `the testimony adduced at the hearings conducted by the sub-committee of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations have clearly established the truth of the reported massacres and other atrocities from which the Armenian people have suffered'.

(14) The resolution followed the April 13, 1920, report to the Senate of the American Military Mission to Armenia led by General James Harbord, that stated `[m]utilation, violation, torture, and death have left their haunting memories in a hundred beautiful Armenian valleys, and the traveler in that region is seldom free from the evidence of this most colossal crime of all the ages'.

(15) As displayed in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Adolf Hitler, on ordering his military commanders to attack Poland without provocation in 1939, dismissed objections by saying `[w]ho, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?' and thus set the stage for the Holocaust.

(16) Raphael Lemkin, who coined the term `genocide' in 1944, and who was the earliest proponent of the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide, invoked the Armenian case as a definitive example of genocide in the 20th century.

(17) The first resolution on genocide adopted by the United Nations at Lemkin's urging, the December 11, 1946, United Nations General Assembly Resolution 96(1) and the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide itself recognized the Armenian Genocide as the type of crime the United Nations intended to prevent and punish by codifying existing standards.

(18) In 1948, the United Nations War Crimes Commission invoked the Armenian Genocide `precisely . . . one of the types of acts which the modern term `crimes against humanity' is intended to cover' as a precedent for the Nuremberg tribunals.

(19) The Commission stated that `[t]he provisions of Article 230 of the Peace Treaty of Sevres were obviously intended to cover, in conformity with the Allied note of 1915 . . ., offenses which had been committed on Turkish territory against persons of Turkish citizenship, though of Armenian or Greek race. This article constitutes therefore a precedent for Article 6c and 5c of the Nuremberg and Tokyo Charters, and offers an example of one of the categories of `crimes against humanity' as understood by these enactments'.

(20) House Joint Resolution 148, adopted on April 8, 1975, resolved: `[t]hat April 24, 1975, is hereby designated as `National Day of Remembrance of Man's Inhumanity to Man', and the President of the United States is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe such day as a day of remembrance for all the victims of genocide, especially those of Armenian ancestry . . .'.

(21) President Ronald Reagan in proclamation number 4838, dated April 22, 1981, stated in part `like the genocide of the Armenians before it, and the genocide of the Cambodians, which followed it--and like too many other persecutions of too many other people--the lessons of the Holocaust must never be forgotten'.

(22) House Joint Resolution 247, adopted on September 10, 1984, resolved: `[t]hat April 24, 1985, is hereby designated as `National Day of Remembrance of Man's Inhumanity to Man', and the President of the United States is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe such day as a day of remembrance for all the victims of genocide, especially the one and one-half million people of Armenian ancestry . . .'.

(23) In August 1985, after extensive study and deliberation, the United Nations SubCommission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities voted 14 to 1 to accept a report entitled `Study of the Question of the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide,' which stated `[t]he Nazi aberration has unfortunately not been the only case of genocide in the 20th century. Among other examples which can be cited as qualifying are . . . the Ottoman massacre of Armenians in 1915-1916'.

(24) This report also explained that `[a]t least 1,000,000, and possibly well over half of the Armenian population, are reliably estimated to have been killed or death marched by independent authorities and eye-witnesses. This is corroborated by reports in United States, German and British archives and of contemporary diplomats in the Ottoman Empire, including those of its ally Germany.'.

(25) The United States Holocaust Memorial Council, an independent Federal agency, unanimously resolved on April 30, 1981, that the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum would include the Armenian Genocide in the Museum and has since done so.

(26) Reviewing an aberrant 1982 expression (later retracted) by the United States Department of State asserting that the facts of the Armenian Genocide may be ambiguous, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in 1993, after a review of documents pertaining to the policy record of the United States, noted that the assertion on ambiguity in the United States record about the Armenian Genocide `contradicted longstanding United States policy and was eventually retracted'.

(27) On June 5, 1996, the House of Representatives adopted an amendment to House Bill 3540 (the Foreign Operations, Export Financing, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 1997) to reduce aid to Turkey by $3,000,000 (an estimate of its payment of lobbying fees in the United States) until the Turkish Government acknowledged the Armenian Genocide and took steps to honor the memory of its victims.

(28) President William Jefferson Clinton, on April 24, 1998, stated: `This year, as in the past, we join with Armenian-Americans throughout the nation in commemorating one of the saddest chapters in the history of this century, the deportations and massacres of a million and a half Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in the years 1915-1923.'.

(29) President George W. Bush, on April 24, 2004, stated: `On this day, we pause in remembrance of one of the most horrible tragedies of the 20th century, the annihilation of as many as 1,500,000 Armenians through forced exile and murder at the end of the Ottoman Empire.'.

(30) Despite the international recognition and affirmation of the Armenian Genocide, the failure of the domestic and international authorities to punish those responsible for the Armenian Genocide is a reason why similar genocides have recurred and may recur in the future, and that a just resolution will help prevent future genocides.

Which one of these findings of fact is subject to reasonable dispute? Is their any independent authority that may be judicially noticed without need for corroborating testimony that opposes a challenged finding of fact, if any?

Do you understand that in the same fashion that there were the Nuremburg trials, etc. that Turkish officials were tried - in absentia - but tried nonetheless for atrociities committed on Armenians - crimes against humanity - and these officials rather than defend themselves did nothing?

Using Nobel Peace Prize Winner Elie Wiesel's screwy logic of why the Armenian Tragedy is not genocide because the word did not exist until after the events, Ahmadenijad is actually correct that there was no Holocaust - technically, so - because Mr. Wiesel himself coined that word after that dark period.

If the ADL, AJC, JINSA or B'nai B'irth actually oppose HR 106, let them come out and speak, let them challenge the findings above. Let them deny that the Young Turks, the legacy they are protecting with their self-righteous babble, were not comprised partially of J-ews.

You know what? They won't because they can't. Because it is true.

The great irony in all of this is that the ADL, a group formed to protect j-ews from false statmenTs, are actually a group of defamers themselves.

At least the ADL allow that reasonable conclusion of their character with a leader like Mr. Foxman. A true zealot, through and through. Golem trash for Turkish defamers.

The other great irony is that a nation formed partly as retribution for great crimes of humanity during WWII - you know Mr. Wiesel's Holocaust (as if he was the only person that ever survived genocide) - must lie about the history that preceded its formation to protect its own existence.

The world did not start in 1948. It won't end tomorrow. But, if Israel continues to bed with the devil, to coddle it, and do its work, then doesn't it wish loathing upon it.

The American J-ewish advocacy groups that release press releases refusing to identify the Armenian tragedy as the 1st genocide of the 20th century or opposing U.S. genocide bills or that carry the message for Turkey in this fashion are defying history and choosing to be on the wrong side of it.

It is self-evident that they are hypocritical, genocide deniers not in line with their constituency in America that will spread bigotry for the political gain of a country other than the U.S. regardless of the turmoil it may cause for the U.S.

They will promote the need for Holocaust rememberance while shunning the rememberance of the genocide that proved the blueprint of the momentary demise of their ancestors through the discounting the truth and placing a premium on lies.

No amount of spin, double talk or propaganda shall clear that indelible stain.

They are not interested in tikkun olam. They are a proxy for Turkey and Israel. They are golem for ugly interests. They endorse the hatred of others for the well being of the history of a murderous regime, Ottoman Turkey. There can be no doubt.

Personne ne peut jouer la géopolitique à l’encontre d’un génocide. La comité exécutif de la Ligue Anti-Diffamation pour la Nouvelle Angleterre a montré un sain jugement moral cette semaine quand il a reconnu que, comme la destruction des Juifs en Europe et des Tutsis au Rwanda, le massacre des Arméniens dans l’Empire ottoman était un crime terrifiant contre l’humanité.

Ces trois genocides avaient des caractéristiques historiques particulières, mais ils ont une signification universelle comme un mal qui se reproduisant doit être identifié correctement pour que l’humanité reconnaisse ses premières scènes et prenne des mesures pour empêcher un massacre de masse.

Mais le bureau national de l’ADL apparement pense qu’il peut faire le tri parmi les génocides. Hier il a renvoyé Andrew Tarsy, le directeur régional, pour avoir recommander vivement à l’organisation nationale de reconnaître la réalité de ce qu’est arrivée de 1915 à 1917 dans ce qui est maintenant la Turquie. L’ADL a publié une publicité dans le Globe et d’autres journaux expliquant sa position.

Hier, dans une interview téléphonique, James Rudolph, le président régional de l’ADL, a qualifié Tarsy de leader extraordinaire. En effet, Tarsy agissait dans la meilleure tradition de l’ADL essayant d’unir les gens de groupes ethniques différents, dans ce cas les Juifs et les Arméniens et de promouvoir les droits de l’homme.

L’ADL national, dans son annonce, condamne vraiment la mise à mort de centaines de milliers d’Arméniens, mais ne peut pas tout à fait décrire ce crime pour ce qu’il était : un génocide. L’ADL dit qu’elle est inquiètet du destin de la communauté juive en Turquie et des relations stratégiques de la Turquie avec les Etats-Unis et Israël.

Mais le traitement de la Turquie de sa minorité juive et sa politique étrangère ne devrait pas dépendre d’un mensonge historique. Si l’ADL national ne reconnaît pas le génocide, il est complice d’une tentative pour étouffer l’affaire.

Au moins deux membres du conseil régional de la ligue Anti-Diffamation ont démissionné en protestation de la décision de section nationale de l’ADL d’avoir licencié le directeur régional de la Nouvelle Angleterre pour avoir reconnu le génocide des Arméniens.

L’ancien président de Polaroid Corp., Stewart L. Cohen et me membre du Conseil municipal Mike Ross ont déclaré qu’ils ne pouvaient plus faire partie d’une organisation qui refuse de reconnaître le génocide arménien.

“Je suis dévasté par cela et ce n’est pas quelque chose que je puis supporter” a dit Mike Ross, dont le père est un survivant de l’Holocauste “aussi je dois prendre cette mesure. J’espère que cela aidera à envoyer un message et que les bonnes personnes de la ligue Anti-Diffamation reconsidèront leur position.” Stewart L. Cohen de son côté a déclaré “chacun est incroyablement triste" et “certains que je décrirais comme navré.”

Le communiqué de presse suivant a été adressé par le Conseil des Relations de la Communauté juive du Grand Boston au nom de Nancy K. Kaufman, directrice exécutive et James Segel, président du Conseil au sujet de la polémique à Boston entre l’ADL et la communauté arménienne :

“La Communauté juive a des rapports amicaux et collégiaux avec la communauté arménienne du Grand Boston depuis de nombreuses années. Le Conseil des Relations de la Communauté juive du Grand Boston a adressé le communiqué suivant le 21 avril 2005 lors de la commémoration du quatre-vingt-dixième anniversaire du génocide.

“Aujourd’hui nous nous joignons avec la communauté arménienne au souvenir du chapitre le plus foncé de l’histoire arménienne, quand, en 1915, l’empire Ottoman a lancé une politique génocidaire qui a continué jusqu’en 1922. Plus d’un et demi millions d’hommes, de femmes et d’enfants arméniens ont été systématiquement assassinés et les survivants ont été dispersés autour du monde. Le génocide arménien a représenté un manque de la communauté internationale d’intervenir contre le pire crime possible, la destruction d’un peuple. Nous ne devons jamais oublier le génocide arménien et maintenir notre garde contre ceux qui nient son occurrence."

À la lumière de la polémique entre l’ADL et la communauté arménienne, nous sommes tenus par cette prise de position et applaudissons la section régionale de l’ADL et de son directeur, Andrew Tarsy, pour leur action sans précédent à l’opposé de leur organisme national. La Ligue Anti-diffamation (ADL) dans une déclaration publiée mardi reconnaît officiellement que les actions de la Turquie contre les Arméniens entre 1915 et 1918 « étaient équivalentes à un génocide ». Cette affirmation pourrait avoir un impact négatif dans la relation entre la Turquie et Israël selon des sources turques.

« Cela pourrait avoir un impact dans nos relations parce que la communauté juive et son lobby à Washington ont soutenu la Turquie dans le passé et ont résisté au lobby arménien » ont affirmé des sources turques au journal israëlien le « Jerusalem Post ». « Cela pourrait avoir un impact négatif. » Le Directeur national de l’ADL Abe Foxman a publié une déclaration mardi affirmant : « A la lumière de la chaude controverse qui a entouré la question turco-arménienne ces dernières semaines et à cause de notre intérêt pour l’unité de la communauté juive à un moment de menaces accrues contre les Juifs, l’ADL a décidé de reétudier la tragédie qui est arrivée aux Arméniens ».

« Nous n’avons jamais nié, mais avons toujours décrit les événements douloureux de 1915-1918 commis par l’Empire ottoman contre les Arméniens comme des massacres et des atrocités » selon la déclaration. « Après réflexion, nous sommes venus à partager la vue de Sir Henry Morgenthau [l’ambassadeur américain dans l’Empire ottoman pendant la Première guerre mondiale], que les conséquences de ces actions étaient en effet équivalentes à un génocide. Si le mot génocide avait existé alors il l’aurait appelé un génocide ».

Après le trouble causé dans son organisation par le licenciement du directeur régional de l’ADL à Boston pour avoir dit publiquement que la ligne politique de l’association sur cette question était « moralement indéfendable » Abe Foxman affirme dans la déclaration qu’il a consulté son « ami et mentor » Elie Wiesel et d’autres historiens respectés « qui reconnaissent ce consensus. J’espère que la Turquie comprendra que c’est en tant qu’amis de la Turquie que nous lui recommandons vivement que la nation se confronte à son passé et travaille à se réconcilier avec les Arméniens au délà de ce chapitre sombre de l’histoire ».

L’ADL et quelques autres organisations juives sont depuis longtemps opposés à une adoption par le Congrès pour d’une résolution caractérisant les événements de cette période comme un génocide. Abe Foxman affirme à nouveau que l’ADL « croit dur comme fer qu’une résolution du congrès sur une telle question ... ne favorisera pas la réconciliation entre les Turcs et les Arméniens et peut mettre en danger la communauté juive de Turquie et la relation multilatérale importante entre la Turquie, Israël et les Etats-Unis ».

Dans une interview avec le « Jerusalem Post », Abe Foxman a dit qu’il ne pensait pas que cette nouvelle position aurait un impact avec la Turquie puisque l’ADL croit toujours que l’action du congrès sur cette question serait contreproductive.

Abe Foxman a également annoncé que lui et Elie Wiesel étaient « prêts à appeler à une conférence internationale de chercheurs, tant turcs qu’arméniens » afin de traiter de cette question.

Foxman, qui a des contacts excellents tant à Ankara qu’à Jérusalem, a déclaré également qu’il n’avait consulté aucune capitale avant la publication de sa déclaration. Ni Jérusalem ni Ankara n’ont fait de commentaire officiel en sur la question. Les ministères des Affaires étrangères des deux capitales semblent avoir été pris complètement au dépourvu par la déclaration.

Les autorités turques ont simplement confirmé qu’une des raisons des liens proches de la Turquie avec Israël est le lobby juif à Washington et l’aide des diverses organisations juives donnée à Ankara afin d’éviter un vote du congrès américain sur ce sujet au cours des précédentes années.

La position de l’ADL sur cette question a également été motivée dans le passé par un souci pour la sécurité de la communauté juive en Turquie. A la question de savoir s’il était désormais inquiet que cette nouvelle position puisse nuire à la communauté juive en Turquie, Abe Foxman a indiqué « j’espère pas parce que nous n’avons pas changé notre position de base » contre une résolution du congrès sur cette question.

Le commentaire du 21 août par David Harris, le Directeur du Comité Juif Américain « Vérité et Conséquences : les Arméniens, les Turcs et les Juifs » sont loin des standards que l’on pourraient s’attendre d’une institution fière avec un noble engagement, aux idéaux les plus hauts de la communauté américaine juive long d’un siècle.

L’AJC reste, malgré le sentiment reflété par cette déclaration et le travail d’individus dans sa direction sur le mauvais côté d’une question des droits de l’homme fondamentale - le Génocide Arménien - et, comme les événements de ces dernières l’ont montré, clairement distante des vues et des valeurs de sa propre communauté.

Dans cette déclaration, l’AJC cherche le crédit du bien agissant, sans en réalité bien agir. L’AJC affirme son engagement de la protection de la vérité historique, mais évite soigneusement - par la formulation évasive et euphémique - la reconnaissance que le fait bien documenté qu’est le Génocide arménien représente un cas indubitable de génocide.

L’AJC livre une mesure de sa position comme celle d’une organisation consacrée à la vérité historique qui joue avec des jeux de mot avec le génocide ou cherche à rationaliser sa réticence à prendre une position moral sur cette atrocité basée sur la valeur géopolitique de la Turquie. La reconnaissance de génocide est un impératif moral, pas un sujet pour la négociation ou une marchandise qui puisse être négocié pour un gain politique.

Tandis que nous apprécions cet effort par David Harris et l’AJC de s’étendre sur cette question, en ce moment seule une déclaration claire de reconnaissance du Génocide arménien et un appel public à l’adoption de la Résolution de Génocide arménienne permettra à l’AJC de rompre proprement avec sa longue tradition de s’opposer à la reconnaissance du Génocide arménien, y compris, malheureusement, ses efforts en cours à Washington de prévenir la réaffirmation de ce crime par le congrès américain.

De 2000 à 2002, j’ai animé un séminaire de troisième cycle intitulé « Ethique et Problématique Politique d’après l’Holocauste » à l’Ecole des Hautes Etudes Internationales de l’Institut Johns Hopkins. L’un des thèmes abordés était la politique de la mémoire et une étude de cas avait pour sujet la controverse autour du langage et son pouvoir.

Nous avons examiné dans le détail le massacre des Arméniens et la façon dont sa relation est devenue le sujet d’un débat féroce. Ce débat opposait les Arméniens, qui insistaient pour que ces évènements de 1915 soient appelés génocide, aux Turcs, qui refusaient catégoriquement d’admettre le mot « g ».

En fait il y avait match nul ; les uns supportant la position arménienne, et les autres supportant la position turque, sur des motifs politiques ou historiques, aucun des camps ne faisant place pour un compromis.

L’argument principal arménien est que près d’un million et demi d’Arméniens avaient été délibérément visés et massacrés par l’Empire Ottoman, huit ans avant qu’apparaisse la moderne République Turque.

A cette époque, le mot génocide n’existait pas. Ce fut Raphael Lemkin, un Juif polonais, qui créa le terme. L’Holocauste était le cadre essentiel de ses études, mais il est resté également, tout au long de sa carrière, hanté par le massacre des Arméniens - et par le besoin de s’opposer à la répétition de tels évènements.

Mais ce terme eut-il existé, il ne fait aucun doute qu’il aurait été invoqué par l’ambassadeur Henry Morgenthau, envoyé des Etats-Unis en Turquie à cette époque et témoin auquel les Arméniens font le plus souvent référence. « Non », répondirent les Turcs. « C’était la guerre. Les Arméniens s’étaient joints à la Russie, leur ennemi.

Beaucoup de personnes, Turcs et Arméniens à la fois, furent tués, mais c’était une conséquence regrettable mais inévitable de ce conflit, et non une action délibérée pour faire disparaître les Arméniens de la surface de la terre, ce que les Nazis tentèrent de faire avec les Juifs ».

Après toutes ces années, évidemment, les survivants et témoins visuels ont disparu. Mais à l’appui de leurs affirmations, les deux camps ont rassemblé autant de preuves documentaires que possible. Ce faisant, aucun dialogue n’a été ouvert. Au lieu de cela, tous deux s’efforçaient de prendre le reste du monde à témoin.

Il n’est pas étonnant que chacun d’entre eux ait essayé d’attirer les Juifs de leur côté. La portée morale de la voix des Juifs, estiment-ils, est de loin plus importante que la réalité des chiffres. Les victimes de la Shoah sont les mieux placées pour faire pencher la balance dans un sens ou dans l’autre.

La position des Arméniens est claire : en tant que victimes de l’Holocauste, personne, mieux que les Juifs, ne peut comprendre leur souffrance et leur douleur ; ayant été confrontés aux dangers de la négation de l’Holocauste, les Juifs savent mieux que personne les conséquences de la distorsion de la vérité historique. Et n’est-ce pas Adolf Hitler qui aurait posé la question : « qui parle encore de l’extermination des Arméniens ? » ouvrant la voie, de fait, à la solution finale ?

De leur côté, les Turcs considéraient que les Juifs ne pourraient pas admettre purement et simplement la version arménienne de l’histoire, pleine de distorsions et de mensonges, mais se souviendraient, par contre, de la tradition d’accueil des minorités turque, en particulier le soutien par l’Empire Ottoman, des Juifs chassés d’Espagne à la fin du 15ème siècle. Qui plus est, les autorités turques adoptaient quelquefois une ligne plus ferme, suggérant, en termes à peine voilés, que l’adoption par les Juifs de la version arménienne de l‘histoire pourrait avoir des conséquences négatives pour les intérêts juifs, en Turquie ou ailleurs.

Et c’est dans ce dilemme entre pragmatisme et principes, qu’ont vécu beaucoup de Juifs pendant des années. Un observateur distant peut penser que le choix peut être fait rapidement, mais en matière de choix politique, quand les options prises peuvent avoir des effets sur la vie de tous les jours, ce n’est pas si facile.

Il en va ainsi pour les gouvernements successifs des Etats Unis, qu’ils soient dirigés par les Démocrates ou les Républicains. Ils en sont tous arrivés aux mêmes conclusions. La Turquie est d’importance vitale pour les intérêts géostratégiques des USA ; à cheval sur deux continents, l’Europe et l’Asie, elle avoisine des pays clefs - depuis l’ancienne Union Soviétique jusqu’à l’Iran, la Syrie et l’Irak - et tient le flanc sud-est de l’OTAN.

Chaque administration a en fait éludé la question arménienne quand elle lui était posée, essayant de dissuader le Congrès des Etats-Unis de qualifier les évènements de 1915 de génocide, et objectant en même temps qu’il n’est pas dans les attributions d’un corps de parlement tiers de trancher dans un vif débat historique.

Je reviens maintenant tout à fait dans ma salle de classe de l’institut John Hopkins. J’avais quatre ou cinq étudiants turcs dans le cours. Tous à l’exception d’un seul défendirent avec orgueil la thèse turque, refusant obstinément d’écouter tout argument adverse. Mais il y avait une jeune femme qui, à la lecture de la documentation consacrée et de bien d’autres, vint me dire que pour la première fois elle avait des doutes sur la version officielle turque des évènements. Il y avait simplement trop d’éléments incontestables sur les souffrances des Arméniens pour accepter la position turque. Elle franchit alors un pas de plus et partagea ses sentiments avec la classe. Malheureusement, les autres étudiants turcs prirent leurs distances avec elle, mais les autres étudiants admirèrent son courage. Ils comprirent instinctivement qu’il ne lui était pas facile d’exprimer sa tristesse et son embarras, mais que dans ces circonstances, cela semblait être ce qu’il convenait de faire. Moi aussi, je l’ai admirée.

J’ai un lien fort avec la Turquie, un pays que j’ai visité en de nombreuses occasions et dont je me sens très proche. Peu de pays ont un rôle aussi critique à jouer dans la sphère des relations internationales. Je reste aujourd’hui reconnaissant pour l’asile que l’Empire Ottoman a donné aux Juifs dans leur fuite de l’Inquisition. Je suis intimement lié à la communauté juive de Turquie et admire leur patriotisme et leur énorme contribution à leur patrie. J’apprécie énormément le lien entre la Turquie et Israël, qui sert au mieux les intérêts de ces deux nations démocratiques dans une région difficile. Et j’apprécie le rôle d’une Turquie ancrée dans l’OTAN et amie des Etats-Unis.

En même temps, je ne puis ignorer les évènements de 1915. L’ambassadeur Morgenthau, le professeur de Harvard Samantha Power, lauréate du prix Pulitzer et auteur de A Problem from Hell : America and the Age of Genocide, le Mémorial de l’Holocauste des Etats-Unis, ont conclu sur la nature de ce qui s’est passé : c’était un génocide, même si ces évènements se sont produits trente ans avant que le terme fut créé.

De mon expérience en matière de traitement de relations difficiles, je crois que la meilleure stratégie est l’affrontement, pas l’évitement. Dans un monde idéal, les historiens Arméniens et Turcs devraient s’asseoir ensemble et se plonger dans les archives, débattre des différences, et rechercher une conception commune de ce qui s’est passé. A ce jour, rien de cela ne s’est produit de façon significative. Je continue à espérer que cela arrivera. Il le faudrait. En tant que Comité Juif Américain, nous avons offert nos services, si besoin est, pour aider à réaliser une telle rencontre. Un recul de quatre vingt dix ans devrait permettre de créer un espace sûr pour étudier des questions contestées.

Entre temps, comme la question redevient d’actualité aux Etats-Unis, il convient d’être clair. Dans un livre publié par le Comité Juif Américain en 1993, sous le titre Négation de l’Holocauste, l’auteur Kenneth Stern, membre l’ AJC expert sur cette question, remarquait « Que le génocide arménien soit devenu un sujet de débat ou quelque chose comme de l’histoire ancienne n’augure rien de bon pour ceux qui s’opposent à la négation de la Shoah ». Il avait raison. Imaginons le jour où un Iranien ou Saoudien cherchera à imposer la négation de la Shoah comme condition à ses échanges commerciaux avec d’autres pays.

Cela semble aller chercher loin ? Ca ne devrait pas. Nous avons beaucoup d’intérêts en tant que Juifs. La protection de la vérité historique devrait être située très haut dans la liste.

Le président israélien Shimon Peres a téléphoné au Premier ministre turc Recep Tayyip jeudi 23 août 2007 pour l’assurer du désir d’Israel de maintenir des liens étroits avec son allié musulman selon un officiel turc. "Shimon Peres a souligné l’importance des des relations pour Israël avec la Turquie" a déclaré l’officiel turc, un proche du Premier ministre turc qui a ajouté "Ce fut une discussion très fructueuse". Mercredi, l’ambassade israélienne à Ankara avait indiqué que l’état juif reconnaîssait "les horibles événements" et "la douleur terrible" que les Arméniens avaient supporté mais avait recommandé aux juifs de ne pas prendre position pour l’une ou l’autre des parties. "Ces dernières ce sujet, regrettablement, est devenu une question politique chargée entre les Arméniens et les Turcs. Israël demande, donc, qu’aucun positionnement ne soit pris ni d’un côté ni de l’autre et qu’aucune définition ne soit faite de ce qui s’est produit. Nous espérons que les deux côtés entreront dans un dialogue ouvert qui leur permettra de guérir les blessures” précise l’ambassade.

De son côté le ministre turc des affaires étrangères Abdullah Gül a rencontré jeudi 23 août 2007 l’ambassadeur israélien à Ankara Pinhas Avivi et a exprimé l’inquiétude de la Turquie.

« C’est une grande déception pour nous, qui avons donné notre appui aux juifs pendant des siècles. Cette décision est contraire à l’argument principal des juifs qui argue du fait qu’il n’y a rien eu de pire que Holocauste » a déclaré le chef de la diplomatie turque. « Nos relations bilatérales souffriront d’une telle décision » a ajouté M.Gul pour qui les historiens sont contournés sur la question alors que la Turquie a proposé l’établissement d’une commission commune d’historiens « qui a été rejetée par l’Arménie ». Il a également demandé l’aide d’Israel afin de bloquer de déclarations semblables d’autres organisations juives.

Selon le quotidien israëlien « Haaretz » M.Gul a indiqué à l’ambassadeur israélien que la « Turquie savait qu’Israël n’était pas responsable de la déclaration de la Ligue Anti-Diffamation, mais est déçu parce qu’Israel aurait pu faire quelque chose pour l’empêcher ».

L’ambassadeur israélien aurait répondu que Jérusalem n’était pas impliqué dans la décision de l’ADL et qu ‘ « il n’y a aucun changement dans la position d’Israel. Nous ne prenons pas partie et croyons que les deux parties doivent avoir un débat pour clarifier et étudier la question et pour déterminer ce qui s’est vraiment produit. »

Un fonctionnaire israëlien a déclaré jeudi à « Haaretz » que l’objectif principal est maintenant de calmer la situation.

« C’est une question extrêmement sensible pour la Turquie et nous leur avons signalé qu’il n’y a aucun changement de notre position et que nous ne souhaitions pas nuire aux liens amicaux entre nos pays. Nous croyons qu’ils ont compris notre message » a conclut le fonctionnaire. À Istanbul, le Consul Général Mordehai Amihai a réagit à la déclaration de l’ADL indiquant que le changement de position de l’organisation ne reflète ni la position d’Israel ni celle de la communauté juive en Turquie : « J’espère que la population turque fait la distinction entre l’état d’Israel, l’organisation (ADL) et la population juive en Turquie. »

For the record: The words "jurk/jurkish" that I use were coined many years ago to characterize the J.e.wish-*urkish common responsibility in the denial and/or fact of the Armenian Genocide. It was used on several Armenian forums of network54 that were shutdown thanks to efforts by individuals like
1. Fadix/Imasdun/... who presents himself as a J.e.wish-Armenian??? from the Armenian community of Quebec and changes his alias every "couple of months"
2. ThornyRose/stormig - a *urkish woman who pretends being the daughter of a *urkish diplomat. She knows some Armenian and may pose as one. She's quite well connected with many Armenian - or non Armenian like "bell-the-cat" - members of most Armenian forums. She's been around for a while.
She "recognizes" the reality of the Armenian Genocide but goes ballistic the moment the words "reparations" and "restoration of Armenian rights" are mentioned
3. winoman/THOT/Winston/....who preaches "brotherhood between Armenians and jurks" - LOL that, apparently, existed before the Genocide????? - and goes ballistic when the responsibility of J.e.ws is mentioned
4.....
It is noteworthy that they are Sipfrod's - AKA Sip - buddies who also gets uneasy when the J.e.wish responsibility is mentioned.

Siamanto, never claimed to have invented a new word, just bringing it to the table. Kind of like a topic for discussion. Viva la resistance.

As you follow the threads below the Jurkish premise, most of it was re: Turkish perception and spin of events with a lil Azeri propaganda and other colored tidbits.

Thought for the day: In the words of Howard Stern, I wish cancer on Abe Foxman and Shimon Peres. There I said it. You know what it felt good too.
