What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

Protest against Turkish Defense Minister Vecdi Gönül's Visit to Los Angeles

GLENDALE--Thousands of Armenian Americans will gather at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Friday, March 24 at 11:00 AM to protest Turkish Defense Minister Vecdi Gönül's visit to the Los Angeles area, reported the Armenian National Committee of American - Western Region (ANCA-WR).

The Armenian American community will rally in front the Beverly Hills Hotel, where Defense Minister Vecdi Gönül will be a guest speaker at a luncheon hosted by the Los Angeles World Affairs Council. During the luncheon, the Defense Minister will brief the audience on "The Evolving Security Environment and Turkey's Strategic Role in Eurasia." He will discuss Turkey's role in relation to the European Union, as well as the changing strategic landscape of Eurasia. There will be a question answer session following his speech, during which issues such as the Armenian genocide and Turkey's dismal record of human rights should be addressed.

In traveling to California, Defense Minister Gönül will be visiting a state that has not only recognized the acts perpetrated by the Ottoman Turkish government in 1915 as Genocide, but one that teaches the history of this crime to its public school students, and has officially set aside a full week every April to honor its victims.

The Defense Minister's visit comes at an especially sensitive time in US-Turkey relations. In recent weeks, the film "Valley of the Wolves," a fiercely anti-American movie, has been a box office hit in theaters across Turkey. According to BBC News, "the film clearly capitalizes on a wave of anti-American feeling." It depicts US troops as cold blooded killers, causing hostility among Turks against the United States, and encourages anti-Semitism by portraying a Jewish US army doctor who cuts out the organs of Iraqi prisoners and sends them to Israel and the West. The film has been publicly praised by many Turkish leaders, including Prime Minster Erdogan, whose wife attended its premiere showing.

The film has prompted the US military to issue warnings to our troops stationed in Turkey. American troops have been advised to avoid theaters in which "Valley of the Wolves" is playing, according to a February 7 report in Stars and Stripes. A partner in the film's production company says "Valley of the Wolves" is not an exaggeration and shows the reality of the war in Iraq. Three million tickets have been sold since its release on February 3. It is most expensive film ever produced in Turkey, continues to break box office records, and is due for release soon in Europe and the United States. The release of "Valley of the Wolves" is not the only recent demonstration of anti-Semitic and anti-American sentiment in Turkey; last year, Hilter's "Mein Kampf" was a best-seller in the country.

The ANCA-WR encourages the community to voice their concerns against the Turkish government's denial of the Armenian genocide and its continuing violations of human rights by joining thousands of protesters at the Beverly Hills Hotel on March 24. The Beverly Hills Hotel is located on 9641 Sunset Boulevard in Beverly Hills. Those wanting to travel to the demonstration on community buses should contact call (818) 507-1933. For those who wish to attend the luncheon, please contact the Los Angeles World Affairs Council at (213) 628-2333 or visit their website www.lawac.org for information on making reservations.

The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) is the largest and most influential Armenian American grassroots political organization. Working in coordination with a network of offices, chapters, and supporters throughout the United States and affiliated organizations around the world, the ANCA actively advances the concerns of the Armenian American community on a broad range of issues.

ARMENPAC JOINS AS CO-SPONSOR OF GENOCIDE COMMEMORATION TO BE HELD IN TIMES
SQUARE, NEW YORK CITY, ON APRIL 23, 2006

Irving, TX - ARMENPAC, The Armenian-American Political Action Committee, is
pleased to announce that it has joined the Knights of Vartan as a co-sponsor
of this year's Armenian Genocide Commemoration that will be held in Times
Square, New York City, on April 23, 2006. The Knights of Vartan is a
fraternal organization dedicated to the memory of the 1.5 million victims of
the 1915 Armenian Genocide by the Ottoman Turkish Empire, and has led the
organization of the Times Square Genocide Commemoration for the past 20
years to increase public awareness of this crime against humanity. "The
Knights of Vartan is glad to be partnering with ARMENPAC, which enjoys
direct contact with decision makers in Washington, D.C., as we try to garner
more support of, and participation in, this event from Members of Congress,"
said Knights of Vartan Grand Commander Edward H. Korkoian.

"ARMENPAC is honored to be a part of the Times Square Genocide
Commemoration, and to join the thousands of Armenian-Americans who annually
gather in solidarity to raise awareness of, and remember their ancestors who
were the victims of, the Armenian Genocide," said ARMENPAC Co-Chair Annie
Totah. This year marks the 91st anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, and
the 21st year that Armenian-Americans will gather at "The Crossroads of the
World" to rally against such crimes against humanity suffered by all peoples
of the World. The Genocide Commemoration Program will be on Sunday, April
23, 2006, from 2:00PM to 4:00PM, at Times Square (43d Street and Broadway,
New York City, New York), and include remarks from genocide survivors,
scholars, politicians and community leaders, among others (log onto
      ARMENPAC's website, www.armenpac.org <http://www.armenpac.org/> , regularly
for the most up to date list of speakers).

"It is imperative that every Armenian-American makes an effort to attend
this year's Times Square Genocide Commemoration as two resolutions regarding
the Armenian Genocide, H.Res.316 and S.Res.320, are currently pending in the
United States Congress. Without question, the most effective way the
Armenian-American community can show its support of these resolutions is to
gather in record numbers at this year's Times Square Genocide
Commemoration," said ARMENPAC Co-Chair Edgar Hagopian.

H.Res.316 and S.Res.320 call upon the President "to ensure that United
States foreign policy reflects appropriate understanding and sensitivity
concerning issues related to human rights, ethnic cleansing, and genocide
documented in the United States record relating to the Armenian Genocide and
the consequences of the failure to realize a just resolution; and in the
President's annual message commemorating the Armenian Genocide to
characterize the systematic and deliberate annihilation of 1.5 million
Armenians as genocide, and to recall the proud history of United States
intervention in opposition to the Armenian Genocide."

ARMENPAC urges all to attend this year's Times Square Genocide
Commemoration, given the significant positive impact a successful grassroots
initiative can have on a Congressperson contemplating his or her position on
an issue, and applauds your active participation in support of
      Armenian-American issues.

ARMENPAC is an independent, bipartisan political action committee with a
nationwide membership. ARMENPAC raises awareness of, and advocates for,
policies that help create peace, security and stability in the Caucasus
region. ARMENPAC provides financial support to federal officeholders,
candidates, political action committees and organizations that actively
support issues of importance to Armenian-Americans. For more information

The British Parliamentary Blue Book and the Denial of the Armenian
          Genocide: The Continuing Saga

Last year, on the 90th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the Turkish
Grand National Assembly (TGNA) mounted a campaign against the 1916
British Parliamentary Blue Book. Couched in terms of improving relations
with the republic of Armenia and resolving the Armenian Genocide issue,
Turkish Parlimentarians claimed that the root of the Armenian Genocide
thesis were British propagandists during World War I, and the TGNA
requested that the British Parliament rescind the 1916 work.

This official Turkish onslaught, which is still in progress, reflected
the continuing cynicism of Turkish authorities when addressing the
Armenian issue. The soft language of peace masked a more disturbing
agenda. The main culprits in this effort were Sukru Elekdag, the former
Turkish ambassador to the United States (now a member of the TGNA), and
his longstanding ally, Justin McCarthy, a long time denier of the
          Armenian Genocide.

Only a few weeks ago, at a special symposium on improving
Turkish-Armenian relations, Sukru Elekdag gave an update on his efforts
to co-opt the British Parliament in the denial of the Armenian Genocide.

In his talk, the British archival historian Ara Sarafian will provide an
update to the activities of Turkish authorities in the United Kingdom,
and discuss the main lines of opposition to Turkish efforts.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Ara Sarafian is an archival historian specialising in
late Ottoman and modern Armenian history. He is the director of Gomidas
Institute (UK) and editor of Gomidas Institute Books. His publications
include the critical edition of the famous 1916 Blue Book, The Treatment
of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire 1916-1916 [Uncensored Edition]. Over
the past year he has advised a group of British Parliamentarians who
have opposed the efforts of the TGNA to deny the Armenian Genocide.
Sarafian was also a participant at the Istanbul University symposium on
          Turkish-Armenian relations (March 15-17, 2006).

              (MAY 6, 2006)

Los Angeles-`Armenia: Challenges of Sustainable Development' is the theme
of an international conference to be held at the University of California,
Los Angeles (UCLA), on Saturday, May 6, from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM. in the

economics, finance, and governance is dedicated to UCLA Professor Emeritus
of Economics, Armen A. Alchian, a world-renowned economist and teacher who
was born in Fresno in 1914 and joined the UCLA faculty in 1946.

The conference is organized by the Armenian Educational
Foundation Chair in Modern Armenian History at UCLA and the Armenian
International Policy Research Group (AIPRG), with support from the UCLA Von
Grunebaum Center for Near Eastern Studies and the Department of Economics.
AEF Chair Holder Richard Hovannisian will open the morning session with
introductory comments on `The Economic Factor,' followed by the
presentation of Professor Alchian and his contributions to economic theory
by a similarly distinguished Professor of Economics, Harold Demsetz.

Enrique Gelband, Deputy Division Chief and former Mission Chief
to Armenia of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), will give the keynote
address on `Growth and Poverty Reduction in Armenia: Achievements and
Challenges,' the title of his recent book published by the IMF. A panel
discussion on the subject will be moderated by UCLA Professor of Economics

Khanjian, Professor of Economics at Ventura College.

The Saturday afternoon session moderated by Professor Lee
Ohanian of the UCLA Department of Economics focuses on specific topics
relating to Armenia's economic development. David Grigorian of the IMF will
speak on `Tax Potential versus Tax Effort: Factors behind the Stubbornly
Low Tax Collection in Armenia'; Bryan Roberts of the Department of Homeland
Security, `Remittances, Poverty, and Growth in Armenia'; and Nerses
Yeritsyan, Central Bank of Armenia, `Financial Sector Development in
Armenia: Problems and Challenges.' A discussion period will conclude the
              afternoon session.

Richard Hovannisian stated: `I am pleased that after sixteen
wonderful semi-annual conferences on Historic Armenian Cities and
Provinces, we shifted the focus to contemporary issues in 2005 with `The
Enduring Legacy of the Armenian Genocide' and `Three Turkish Voices on the
Armenian Question.' Now, for the first conference of 2006, the economic and
fiscal challenges facing the Republic of Armenia will be addressed. I am
thankful to David Grigorian for arranging much of the program, especially
as Ascher, Khanjian, Roberts, Yeritsyan, and Grigorian are also associated
with AIPRG. The subject of this conference is of critical importance to
Armenia and all those concerned with the welfare of its people.'

The conference is open to the public and free of charge.
Parking is available in Structure 2 at the Hilgard and Westholme Avenue

                  PRESS RELEASE
                  DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY
                  University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
                  Contact: Prof. Gerard Libaridian
                  Email: [email protected]

FIFTH MEETING OF THE WORKSHOP FOR ARMENIAN/TURKISH SCHOLARSHIP TO
                  CONVENE AT NYU

Public Session Scheduled for Sunday, May 14

The next meeting of the Workshop for Armenian/Turkish Scholarship
(WATS) will convene at New York University, May 14-16. This will be the
fifth meeting of this important undertaking. The three day gathering
will start with a session open to the public, from 7:00-9:00 PM in the
Hemmerdinger Hall, Silver Center, 100 Washington Square East, 1st
Floor. Organized by Professors Fatma Müge Göçek (Sociology,
University of Michigan), Gerard Libaridian (History, Michigan), and
Ronald Grigor Suny (History, Michigan), previous meetings of WATS were
held at the University of Chicago (2000), University of Michigan
(2002), the University of Minnesota (2004) and in Salzburg, Austria
last year. The fifth meeting is being hosted by New York University and
the organizers are joined by Prof. Paul Boghossian ( Philosophy, NYU).
The theme of the workshop this year is `The Boundaries of Genocide:
                  Intentions, Histories, Peoples.'
`Dialogue is an ideal that often ends up with one side talking and the
other appearing to listen,' commented Prof. Ronald Suny. `In
discussions about the Armenian Genocide of 1915, neither side -
Armenian or Turkish - seemed to understand, or even hear, what the
other was saying. How could the deportation and massacre of hundreds
of thousands of people be metastasized into a civil war that never
occurred? How could one blame the victims for their own deaths? This
workshop has been one of the most exciting and productive scholarly
initiatives in the last five years that has brought Turkish, Armenian,
and other historians and social scientists together to present research
and talk about the fate of the Armenians and other minorities in the
last years of the Ottoman Empire.'
The evening session on May 14 will serve to acquaint the general
public with the work of this initiative. In addition to introductory
comments by Prof. Boghossian and officials of the host institution,
Professors Gocek, Suny and Libaridian will present reports on various
aspects of WATS and answer questions. The public is invited.

                    Armenians Remember Genocide

                    Armenians Remember Genocide
About 2,500 join in annual protest held outside the Turkish Consulate in L.A.

                    April 25, 2006

Waving Armenia's flag of red, blue and orange, about 2,500 Armenian Americans on Monday staged an annual protest of what they say was a Turk-sanctioned genocide of their ancestors.

The rally, held in front of the Turkish Consulate in the 6300 block of Wilshire Boulevard, was one of many events worldwide commemorating April 24, 1915, the day Armenians say the mass deportations, arrests and executions began.

Of the estimated 2 million Armenians in the Ottoman Empire at the time, Armenian Americans say, more than 1 million died between 1915 and 1923. The empire became the modern republic of Turkey.

In West Hollywood, city flags flew at half-staff. Last week, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared April 23-29 "Days of Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide."

"We want all the world to know that this happened," said Christine Hovananian, 50, of Glendale.

"Turkey should say that 'we have done this to Armenian people.' "

For her, that means acknowledging the 1915 murders of her aunts, uncles and grandparents in the village of Van in eastern Turkey. Hovananian's father and mother escaped separately to Iraq, where they eventually met and married.

For the three decades she has lived in Southern California, Hovananian has protested every year in front of the consulate in her relatives' memory.

"Their blood is asking us … get that 'genocide' name," Hovananian said.

The Turkish government does not recognize what occurred as genocide, attributing the deaths to fighting between Turks and Armenians.

"Armenian allegations of genocide have never been historically or legally substantiated," Turkish Ambassador Nabi Sensoy said in a statement in response to a PBS documentary aired last week. "Unlike the Holocaust, the numbers, dates, facts and the context associated with this period are all contested."

More than 150,000 people of Armenian descent live in Los Angeles County, according to the 2000 census.

The Armenian National Committee of America says there are as many as 60,000 in Los Angeles alone.
