This is a significant development; it is the first time (as far as I know) that the phrase “Ermeni Katliami” (Armenian Massacre –attention: not the Genocide) has been criminalized under Turkish law.
The prosecutor office in Ankara has brought the charges against the lawyer Medeni Ayhan under the paragraph 312 of new Turkish Penal Code which took effect on June 1, 2005 (There is no difference between the old and new 312 which prohibits the instigation of ethnic hatred.) The interesting aspect of the issue is that prosecutor office hasn’t brought the charges under the infamous paragraph 306
