If in 1920s there were more than 900 Armenian churches in Turkey. By 1974 according to data publicized by UNESCO more than the half of them had been destroyed, 212 ruined and 197 needed urgent reconstruction.
I wish people would stop quoting those invented statistics. This time they haven't even quoted them correctly. the 900 figure is supposedly from 1974. Have you ever seen a list of those churches that supposedly existed in 1974. Can you quote me the name of the person who went to visit them, and decided which were "destroyed", which were "ruined" and which were "needed urgent reconstruction". No. Because there was no such person or group. They are all fake statistics, and until Armenians start to get serious, stop producing lies and propaganda, and start producing facts and figures and above all, solutions, then nothing good will happen.

Specialists charge that Turkey exterminates Armenian culture by turning churches into mosques, and by other means.
    More propaganda.
What audience do these "specialists" talk to. Nobody except dimwit Armenian ultra-nationalists I think.

There is nothing wrong with a disused former church being reused as a mosque or cafe or museum or concert hall or barn, etc, if that ensures its preservation. What other solution is there but that? But bigoted Armenian ultra-nationalists would rather they were left to be entirely destroyed rather than be preserved and used by Turks in this way.

I think there is everything wrong with a church-no matter in what condition-being changed to a mosque. It's pretty self explanatory why. If they want a mosque, they can build it across the street from this church, not on it!

Hemshins are of Armenian origin but they are now Muslim, I think there is nothing wrong for Hemshins to convert their churches into Mosques

1- A Hamishin would never build a church - for obvious reasons, thefefore, you can't call them Hamishin churches so they don't belong to them.. meaning, they have no right to touch them.

2- Hamishins aren't the ones turning churches into mosques.

There is no polite way to put it.

You are either very selfish, or are one of those dimwit Armenian ultra-nationalists. Either way, you are part of the problem.

Why did you edit it? I liked your "idiot" comment better.. it's nice to see "intellectuals" like you are so quick in judging people and calling them names.

I'm part of the problem because I believe it's wrong to build a mosque on a church out of all places? If everyone thought like you, Armenians would've lost their culture and heritage long time ago.

Sorry, I should have kept the "idiot" comment but I felt I needed more evidence that you were an idiot before I used it. The evidence is now conclusive.

You have lost your culture and heritage, that's the point. And rather than have it be preserved by others, you would rather it were destroyed completely.

This post is sufficient enough to show who the real idiot is in here.

                  Thenk you.

How to get to be called an "intellectual".

The hard way: get good grades at school, go to university, get a First, write your post-grad thesis on something complicated, become a lecturer, write lots and lots of papers for obscure academic journals, review lots of papers by your peers, get to be over 50, get to see your best students become lecturers.

The easy way: post something intelligent in an Armenian forum.

I wish the poor sods that took the hard route could have known how easy it could have been.

In one way you, I agree with you. But what if there are no Armenians left to attend the church, tend to the church, and keep the church in good condition? In that case, the alternative is that the church will be neglected and allowed to decay over time. I think in such a situation, it would be better to use the church as a mosque or cultural center, but retain its Armenian character and also make it clear that it was built by Armenians. That way the church remains in tact.

I know that the ideal situation is that the church is maintained as a church, but how realistic is that in a country that is 99.9% muslim?

Bell, the problem is that even when the Armenian churches are used as mosques or sports arenas or barns, there is no mention of them as having been built by Armenians; there is no mention of their historic and cultural value. Thus, as you know better than anyone else here, the manner in which they are used, they may as well be lost forever.
