Lutem: Ottoman Empire Granted Broad Religious Freedoms To Non-muslim Minorities
NEW YORK - ''Non-Muslim minorities were granted broad religious freedom under Ottoman Empire,'' Omer Lutem, chairman of the Institute of Armenian Studies, said on Wednesday.
Taking the floor in a seminar at the New York Columbia University on ''Minorities in the Ottoman Empire'' Lutem said: ''according to sources, nearly 2 million Armenians lived in the Ottoman Empire. During the World War I, Armenians collaborated with the enemy, i.e. Russian forces. Therefore, the Ottomans had to fight against both Russians and Armenians. On the contrary of all allegations, Armenians were not deported. They were merely relocated in different parts of the empire. Some of them died during the transfer. However, Armenians exaggerated number of casualties and qualified the relocation as 'genocide'. In fact, number of killed Muslim civilians was much higher.''

''On the other hand, Armenians signed the Gumru Treaty in 1920 and acknowledged the borders drawn with the Treaty of Sevres. Therefore, they cannot have territorial claims from Turkey,'' he added.

Meanwhile, Eurasia Strategic Studies Center Chairman Gunduz Aktan said, ''there are personal and collective memories on one hand, and history on the other. Memories belongs to the Armenian diaspora. But the history is much more objective. We (the Turks) have also memories about the events. Dialogue and cooperation are necessary to form a common recollection. Actually, Turkey is the party which has launched initiatives to this end. Lately, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan proposed to set up a joint commission, however, the Armenians rejected the proposal.''

Who said we're angry. Let the nationalistic Turks organize whatever events they want. The Lyon and Berlin demonstrations are a great example of what happens when nationalistic Turks decide to do something. Ultimately, it results in a backlash against them, because their position, attitude, and even their manner of expressing their view is vile to most civilized people. At every turn, the deniers are losing the information war, and it's not because Armenians are politically powerful or particularly organized; as a veteran of this website, I'm sure you understand by now that we are as divided and unorganized as any other group. Yet, the Turkish ultranationalist deniers are losing, because their view is vile and wrong, and more and more people of the world are beginning to understand that.

It is probably an Armenian, sure nobody can generalize this to all Armenians, but this kind of confronting events just fuels up the frusturation(not to mention the annual may parade harrassments in NY).

Did you go to the Sibel Can concert?. I personally dont like her(but my mom does, dont know why), but she recently lost her mother, and she says every time she goes to concerts in Europe or US her mom always accompanied her, this time she was also heart broken to go concert without her mom. And after this bomb thing came up she is probably affected very much from this.

I understand your point that we Armenians in the U.S. and other parts of the world should not object to and attack every single thing the Turks try to organize and do. But when Turks try to organize seminars at Universities for the purpose of selling false propaganda and lies about what really happened to our ancestors in the Ottoman Empire, then I think they have crossed the line. We should do whatever we can to stop these presentations and lies, particularly in supposedly academic settings. As you can see from the Columbia seminar, the whole point of the seminar was to disseminate the Turkish lie about what happened to our people. Even you must admit that what Lutem said at Columbia was horse shi.t at best: "Armenians collaborated with the enemy, i.e. Russian forces. Therefore, the Ottomans had to fight against both Russians and Armenians. On the contrary of all allegations, Armenians were not deported. They were merely relocated in different parts of the empire." He makes it sound like summer camp for the Armenians. You think we should allow arseholes like this to run around the world selling these lies? I don't think so! And if you think this is acceptable, then you really don't understand the problem at all.
