  • 30 Years Imprisonment For Ramil Safarov

Yesterday the Budapest court continued the trial over Azerbaijani serviceman Ramil Safarov charged with a murder of Armenian officer Gurgen Margarian. The murderer was allowed to have a final word. Despite the efforts of Safarov’s lawyer, the judge said that the defendant’s guilt is already established and that the latter was sane while committing the crime. Information on imprisonment terms varies from 30 years to life imprisonment.

Verdict is expected to be announced on April 13.

    Hungarian prosecutor demands 30-year imprisonment

    Source: Trend
    Author: S.Aliyev

    05.04.2006

Prosecutor on the case of Ramil Safarov, an Azerbaijani officer accused of murder of his Armenian fellow, Gurgen Markarian, during the military exercises in Hungary demanded 30-year imprisonment for the convicted, Adil Ismayilov, Safarov’s law-defender told Trend.

Ismayilov noted that Safarov’s law-defenders submitted petition on conduct of one more expertise as the previous expertise test showed different results. However, the Judge rejected the petition stating that the conclusion will be made on the base of previous expertise tests.

During the meeting the law defenders of both sides made remarks. The last word by Safarov will be made on 13 April.

Klo Denounces Prosecutor's Intention To Pass Severe Sentence Upon Safarov

        Azerbaijan Press Agency
        April 5 2006

The Garabagh Liberation Organization (GLO) today issued a statement
with regard to the trial of Azerbaijani Army officer Ramil Safarov,
who is indicted for murder of Armenian officer Gurgen Margarian,
        in Budapest, Hungary.

The GLO informed APA that it condemned pan-Armenian approach of
Prosecutor Kish Veronika and Judge Andrash Vaskutin by asking severe
sentence for the Azerbaijani officer. In the statement, the GLO
also denounced Budapest city court being in favor of the interests
        of Armenians.

"The Budapest city court intends to administer a cruel punishment
on Ramil Safarov by the judge Andrash Vaskutin. This case arouses
serious doubts that Armenia has bribed the court. The Budapest city
court and the judge Vaskutin should renounce their biased approach
and pass a fair verdict," the GLO stressed in the statement.

The Garabagh Liberation Organization also said that injustice approach
by the Hungarian authorities and court towards Ramil Safarov will be
        given a response.

          Prosecutor Demanded Life Sentence

          Lragir.am
          04.04.2006

On April 4 the recurrent sitting for the trial of the Azerbaijani
officer Ramil Safarov indicted for the assassination of the Armenian
officer Gurgen Margaryan took place. The prosecutor stated that at the
moment of committing the crime the murderer was sane. The prosecutor
demanded a life sentence for Safarov, without the right for pardon
for 30 years. According to him, it is the harshest punishment by
the Hungarian criminal code. The prosecutor started his speech with
the statement that by this monstrous murder Ramil Safarov disgraced
the honor of Hungary as a host country. According to the prosecutor,
on arriving in Hungary Gurgen Margaryan did not think that he would
not be able to return home, he did not think that his life would be
endangered in Hungary. After the prosecutor's speech, the defender
and the defendant pronounced their final speeches. The verdict will
          be passed on April 13.

Azeri Lawyer Failed to Understand Hungarian Prosecutor

            05.04.2006 19:27 GMT+04:00
/PanARMENIAN.Net/ “The prosecutor demanded 30-year imprisonment for Ramil Safarov accused of the murder of Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan,” Safarov’s defender Adil Ismaylov said. Meanwhile as PanARMENIAN.Net agency reported earlier, actually the Hungarian prosecutor demanded life imprisonment at that 30 years without the right of amnesty. The prosecutor said the murder was committed with extreme cruelty and is a threat for the national security of Hungary. He also underscored that when committing the crime Safarov was sane.

Adil Ismaylov said that Safarov’s lawyers submitted a petition for one more medical-forensic examination, since the results of the previous ones differ. However the judge declined the petition and said the decision will base on the examinations conducted. Lawyers representing both sides addressed the court April 4. Ismaylov also informed Safarov will make his last statement April 13.

It should be noted that Hungarian lawyer Gabriela Kaspar stated that Margaryan’s murder should be classified as genocide since it was committed through national hatred.

Committee to Protect Safarov Demands Delay of Announcing Verdict

              12.04.2006 01:14 GMT+04:00
/PanARMENIAN.Net/ “The Budapest city court is influenced by Armenian lobby and therefore will not pass a fair verdict regarding the Azerbaijani officer,” Head of the Committee to Protect Ramil Safarov’s Rights Akif Naghi said in Baku. In his words, the Committee demands that the trial scheduled April 13 be postponed and the court staff be replaced.

The Committee also believes that Azerbaijan’s parliamentary group for relations with the Hungarian Parliament should leave for Budapest as soon as possible. In addition, the Azerbaijani parliament should hold a debate on Safarov’s case at Hungarian Parliament, a large media group should be sent to Budapest, and his extradition should be achieved irrespective of the verdict on him, APA reports.

                Life Imprisonment For ‘national Hero’

                AZG Armenian Daily #068, 14/04/2006

Yesterday, the Budapest Municipal Court convicted Ramil Safarov to life imprisonment with no right to amnesty for 30 years. Charged with axing to death Armenian serviceman Gurgen Margarian in his sleep on February 19 2004, Safarov received the ultimate punishment under Hungarian law. All efforts of the Azerbaijani side to portrait Safarov as not guilty proved futile as the evidence of premeditated murder triumphed over Azeris fake proofs.

"That was the ultimate verdict for the Hungarian court," Nazeli Vardanian, attorney of Gurgen Margarian, told daily Azg over the phone.

Prior to bringing in the verdict the court listened to Safarov’s final words. The embarrassed "national hero" of Azerbaijan said at first that he has a poor command of Russian and the court should review his initial evidence, then he went on the last try to persuade the court that he has mental disorder and murdered Margarian while having an attack. He said he remembers nothing, even why he had bought the axe. He had no intention to murder the Margarian and did not attempt the life of Hayk Makuchian, the other Armenian serviceman.

"He said no words of regret; never felt sorry for taking the young Armenian’s life," Nazeli Vardanian added.

Upon hearing the verdict, Safarov’s defense said they will file an appeal, though the judge’s words clear up any doubt of the defendant’s guilt.

The Azerbaijani "national hero" and "man of the year" will stand the next trial on the second charge on May 3.

Axe-murder Azerbaijani Soldier Sentenced To Life In Hungary

                  Deutsche Presse-Agentur
                  April 13, 2006, Thursday
                  16:55:07 Central European Time

An Azerbaijani soldier who brutally murdered an Armenian lieutenant
with an axe during a NATO Partnership for Peace training course in
Budapest was sentenced to life imprisonment Thursday.

Lieutenant Ramil Safarov, 29, was convicted of killing Armenian
Lieutenant Gurgen Markarian, 26, with an axe and a knife in 2004.

Budapest District Court Judge Andras Vaskuti ruled that Safarov killed
his victim in a "premeditated, malicious and cruel" manner.

Safarov hacked Markarian to death with a knife and an axe in the
early hours of the morning while he slept in the same room as a
                  Hungarian soldier.

A policeman at the time said the murder had been committed with
unusual cruelty, saying that "besides the knife wounds to his chest,
the victim's head was practically severed from his body."

Safarov, who was also convicted of planning the murder of a second
Armenian officer, is expected to be eligible for parole in 30 years.

Witnesses at the time said there had been no arguments between the
men, but relations between the two former Soviet Republics were tense
after Armenian-backed forces drove Azerbaijan's army out of the ethnic
Armenian enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh in the early 1990s.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The Hungarian court passed a sentence not only to Ramil Safarov, but also to the Azerbaijani state, Armenian MFA representative at the Budapest trial Hayk Demoyan stated at a news conference in Yerevan. In his words, Azerbaijan has suffered a huge moral and psychological, as well political damage in the eyes of the European community. «Azerbaijan got second warning in 2006 that medieval way of thinking has nothing to do at the EU. You must not destroy monuments and kill. Azerbaijan will not be included in Europe that way,» Demoyan emphasized.
