LOS ANGELES, CA – String quartet miniatures by the great Armenian composer Komitas, along with the U.S. premiere of Testament by Tigran Mansurian, and Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, composed in a Nazi prison camp in 1940, will be presented at the Dilijan Chamber Music Series’ season-ending concert on Friday, April 21, 2006. This commemorative concert, to be held at the Colburn School’s Zipper Hall in downtown Los Angeles, is dedicated to the 91st anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Roland Kato, Principal Violist of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and pianist Randy Kerber, an Academy and Grammy Award nominee, will be joined by clarinetist Phil O’Connor, violinist Varty Manouelian, cellist Armen Ksajikian, and violinist Movses Pogossian, Artistic Director of the Dilijan Series.
At this concert, the Dilijan Series will also unveil its exciting 2006-07 season at Zipper Hall, featuring artists such as Kim Kashkashian, Ani Kavafian, Norman Krieger, Ida Levin, Brian Dembow, Antonio Lysy, Robert Thies, Peter Stumpf and Allan Vogel, as well as three world premiere works commissioned by the Dilijan Series. Discounted subscriptions for the second season will be available for purchase at the April 21st concert.
Founded by members of the Lark Musical Society, the Dilijan Chamber Music Series is dedicated to showcasing masterpieces of Western classical music, popularizing Armenian chamber music, and commissioning new masterpieces. The highly successful inaugural concert of the series in September 2005 featured the world premiere of Serenade with a Dandelion by award-winning composer Vache Sharafyan, whose works are championed by Yo Yo Ma and Philip Glass, among others.
